Prokeimenon, Tone 8

Pray and give praise to the Lord our God.* Pray and give praise to the Lord our God.

Verse: In Judea God is known; His name is great in Israel. (Psalm 75:12,2)

Epistle - Romans 13:11-14:4

A reading from the holy Apostle Paul to the Romans.

Brothers and sisters, you know what time it is, how it is now the moment for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer1 to us now than when we became believers; the night2 is far gone, the day3 is near. Let us then lay aside the works of darkness and put on the armour of light; let us live honourably as in the day, not in revelling and drunkenness, not in debauchery and licentiousness, not in quarrelling and jealousy. Instead, put on the Lord Jesus Christ,4 and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires. Welcome those who are weak in faith,5 but not for the purpose of quarrelling over opinions. Some believe in eating anything,

1 Salvation is nearer: With reference to our personal judgment as well as to Christ’s future return in glory. 2 The night – is the life in the world, and especially life under the influence of sin and evil, where death still pervades in the world. It is essentially a time for conversion, until the unending day of eternity dawns. In the meantime, Christians must be on guard against the devil, protecting themselves with the armor of light. 3 The day – refers to the presence of Christ’s Kingdom, both in the Church now at hand and fulfilled completely in the age to come. 4 Put on the Lord Jesus Christ: That is, renew the commitments you made at Baptism, when you were first clothed with Christ (Gal 3:27). One has to flee the occasions of sin that entice the flesh. 5 Weak in faith: Paul’s instructions are directed toward two groups in the Church of Rome, called the weak and the strong. The weak are mainly a Jewish Christian minority who maintain a distinct vegetarian diet (14:2), observe the liturgical feast days of Israel (14:5-6), and may adhere to the food laws of the Torah. The behavior of the weak, especially their abstinence from meat and wine is probably a conscious imitation of biblical heroes who avoided Gentile foods while living in Gentile lands. The strong are

while the weak eat only vegetables. Those who eat must not despise those who abstain, and those who abstain must not pass judgment6 on those who eat; for God has welcomed them. Who are you to pass judgment on servants of another? It is before their own lord that they stand or fall. And they will be upheld, for the Lord is able to make them stand.

Alleluia, Tone 6

Verse: It is good to give praise to the Lord, and to sing to Your name, O Most High. Verse: To announce Your mercy in the morning and Your truth every night. (Psalm 91:2,3)

Gospel - Matthew 6:14-21

The Lord said, “If you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you; but if you do not forgive others, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.7 And whenever you fast, do not look dismal, like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces8 so as to show others that they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their

mainly Gentile Christians. Apparently the strong have a condescending attitude toward the weak that needs correcting. 6 Pass judgment: To inflate differences of opinion is to cause division and strife. The strong should accommodate the weak without gloating over their Christian freedom or looking with contempt on them. In this case, preserving peace is a higher priority than the exercise of liberty. The weak and the strong are answerable to God, not to each other. 7 Forgiveness: Jesus insists on mutual forgiveness between people as a precondition of God’s forgiveness. Those who do not forgive are not forgiven – period. This teaching is repeated in the parable of the unforgiving servant (Mt. 18:21-35), which concludes with the same teaching. To not forgive others is to willfully flee from the forgiveness of God for ourselves. 8 Disfigure their faces: Keeping a sad countenance to show off one’s fasting is mere external display. Jesus rejects such hypocrisy. For the one who fasts, the compassion of God outshines the physical discomfort. During the fasting seasons of the Church the hymns call the faithful to wash and anoint their faces. Fasting is for spiritual growth and the glory of God, not to be seen by those around us.

reward. But when you fast, anoint your head9 and wash your face, so that your fasting10 may be seen not by others but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth,11 where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal; but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

Communion Hymn

Praise the Lord from the heavens;* praise Him in the highest.* Alleluia, alleluia,* alleluia. (Psalm 148:1)

Alternate Ambo Prayer

We thank You, O Lord Jesus Christ, that You have brought us to this opportune time of fasting unto salvation, for You have established this brief season to heal the great wounds of our souls, and to bring about the rejection of our many sins. Good master, we pray You, remove from us any pharisaical hypocrisy in fasting, and banish all false sorrow. Drive from us all pride in our self-denial and moderation in deeds, words or thoughts. Fill us with light and the truth which You have taught. Strengthen us in the struggle against passions and in the war against sin. By putting far from us our passions, prepare us to follow You by our fasting. Show us victory over the devil, that we may partake of Your death and Resurrection, and be glad in the joy which You have prepared for those who

9 Anoint your head: Fasting was often a public practice accompanied by wearing sackcloth and putting ashes on one’s head (Esther 4:3; Dan 9:3). While it was intended to express inner repentance, hypocrites utilized it to appear devout. Washing and anointing with oil outwardly symbolize happiness and disguise one’s inner commitment to God. 10 Fasting: Fasting is also not merely abstinence form food, but consists of self-denial in all areas of life in order to escape the control of the passions. On the eve of Great

hunger and thirst for righteousness. For You are the God of mercy, and glory is Yours, together with the Father and Your all-holy, good and life-giving Spirit, now and for ever and ever.

Rite of Mutual Forgiveness

Prayer of Saint Ephrem

O Lord and Master of my life! Drive from me the spirit of indifference and discouragement, lust for power, and idle chatter. (Bow)

Instead, grant to me, Your servant, the spirit of integrity, humility, patience, and love. (Bow)

Yes, O Lord and King! Let me see my own sins and not to judge my brothers and sisters; for You are blessed, for ever and ever. Amen. (Bow)

Priest: Bowing our heads and bending our knees, let us pray to the Lord.

All: Lord, have mercy.

Priest and faithful kneel.

Priest: Hear us, O God our Savior, hope of all those who live to the ends of the earth, and those traveling by sea, air and land! Through the Law and the Prophets You foretold these holy days of fast, placing before us a pattern of repentance and of putting our selfish passions to death. When in the fullness of time You appeared in the flesh on earth, You established and sanctified these days since You Yourself fasted forty days and nights. As One Who is compassionate and merciful, grant that all of us – in perfect repentance, in unpretending humility, in fervent prayer, in hunger and thirst, in frequent bending of our

Lent, we sing, “Let us abstain from passions as we abstain from food.” St. John Chrysostom writes, “What good is it if we abstain from eating birds and fish, but bite and devour our brothers?” 11 Treasures on earth: By attaching themselves to treasures on earth, people cut themselves off from heavenly treasures. They become slaves to earthly things rather than free in Christ. The heart of discipleship lies in: 1) disentangling ourselves from the chains of earthly things, and 2) attaching ourselves to God, the true treasure.

4

knees, and with a broken heart – may begin these holy days and complete their course without stain, our conscience clear. May we preserve the Faith undefiled and indivisible, and be shown as victors over sin. Set Your Angel of Peace over our lives to keep our comings and goings unharmed and unhindered against all deceits and onslaughts of the Enemy, to guide us toward the accomplishment of every virtue, and to strengthen us by Your power for the struggles of the Fast, so that selfish passions may be restrained and souls and bodies cleansed. May we be found worthy, without reproach, to partake of Your most pure Body and Your precious and life-creating Blood. For You are a God of mercy, compassion and love for mankind, and You desire that everyone be saved – and to You, with Your beginningless Father, and Your most holy, good and life-creating Spirit, we give glory now and forever and ever.

All: Amen.

Priest: Bless, honourable brothers and sisters, and forgive me a sinner, wherein I have sinned this day, and in all the days of my life, in word, deed, or thought, and in all my senses of soul and body.

All: Father(s), may God forgive you and have mercy upon you. Bless, honourable father(s) and forgive us sinners, wherein we have sinned this day, and in all the days of our lives, in word, deed, or thought, and in all our senses of soul and body.

Priest: Through His grace, + may God forgive your sins and have mercy on you all.

Prayer of Forgiveness

All: Lord, Jesus Christ, in Your great mercy and love for mankind, You prayed for the forgiveness of those who crucified You, and You taught us to love our enemies, to pray for those who persecute or offend us and to forgive them. Today, with the help of Your grace, I choose to forgive those who have hurt me in the past, or those who continue to persecute or offend me this day.

Moment of silence. Remember the persons in silence.

All: Lord, bless them and guide them according to Your will. Also bless me in my decision to forgive and take away any bitterness and resentment that I have in my heart. May Your forgiveness, goodness and loving-kindness be revealed in all of us, to Your praise and glory. Amen.

All rise.

Once everyone is standing, the before closing the holy doors the priest says:

Priest: Through the prayers of our holy fathers, Lord Jesus Christ, our God, have mercy on us.

All: Amen.

For Further Reflection

The Ancient of Days Daniel 7:9-14

I, Daniel, continued to watch until thrones were put in place, and the Ancient of Days enthroned Himself. His clothing was white as snow, and the hair of His head was like pure wool. His throne was a fiery flame, and its wheels a burning fire. A river of fire flowed from before Him. Thousands and thousands ministered to Him, and countless thousands stood before Him. The court was in session, and the books were opened. Then I kept watchcing because of the sound of the arrogant words the horn was speaking. I watched until the beast was put to death and destroyed, and its body given to the burning flame. As for the rest of the beasts, their dominion was taken away, yet length of life was given them for a season and a time.

I continued to observe the vision in the night, and behold, One like the Son of Man was coming with the clouds of heaven, until He came to the Ancient of Days and approached Him. Then dominion, honour, and the kingdom were given to Him, and all peoples, tribes, and languages served Him. His authority is an everlasting authority which shall not pass away, and His kingdom shall not be destroyed.

Forgiveness of Debts Deuteronomy 15:1-2

“At the end of every seven years you shall grant a rlease. And this is the manner of the release: every creditor shall release what he has lent to his neighbour; he shall not exact it of his neighbour, his brother, because the Lord’s release has been proclaimed.

Forgiving Others Proverbs 17:9; 10:12

He who forgives an offense seeks love, but he who repeats a matter alienates a friend. Hatred stirs up strife, but love covers all offenses.

God Forgives (Old Covenant) Leviticus 4:27-31

27 “If any one of the common people sins unwittingly in doing any one of the things which the LORD has commanded not to be done, and is guilty, 28 when the sin which he has committed is made known to him he shall bring for his offering a goat, a female without blemish, for his sin which he has committed. 29 And he shall lay his hand on the head of the sin offering, and kill the sin offering in the place of burnt offering. 30 And the priest shall take some of its blood with his finger and put it on the horns of the altar of burnt offering and pour out the rest of its blood at the base of the altar. 31 And all its fat he shall remove, as the fat is removed from the peace offerings, and the priest shall burn it upon the altar for a pleasing odor to the LORD; and the priest shall make atonement for him, and he shall be forgiven.

A New Covenant Foretold Jeremiah 31:31-34

31 “Behold, the days are coming, says the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah, 32 not like the covenant which I made with their fathers when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, my covenant which they broke, though I was their husband, says the LORD. 33 But this is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD: I

will put my law within them, and I will write it upon their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 34 And no longer shall each man teach his neighbor and each his brother, saying, ‘Know the LORD,’ for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, says the LORD; for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.”

Repentance and Forgiveness Isaiah 1:16-20

Wash yourselves; make yourselves clean; remove the evil of your doings from before my eyes; cease to do evil, 17 learn to do good; seek justice, correct oppression; defend the fatherless, plead for the widow. 18 “Come now, let us reason together, says the LORD: though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool. 19 If you are willing and obedient, you shall eat the good of the land; 20 but if you refuse and rebel, you shall be devoured by the sword; for the mouth of the LORD has spoken.” = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Transformed by Christ’s Mercy:

Homily for Forgiveness Sunday

(Cheese Fare)

Fr. Philip LeMasters

Today we stand right on the edge of Great Lent,

for the weeks of preparation to follow our Saviour

to His Passion begin tomorrow. We have already

been challenged to prepare with the Sundays of the

Tax Collector and the Pharisee, the Prodigal Son,

and the Last Judgment. Now it is the Sunday of

Forgiveness, when we are reminded that we must

forgive one another if we hope to receive God’s

forgiveness for our sins.

Every time we pray the Our Father, we say “and

forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who

trespass against us.” Christ teaches in today’s

gospel lesson that “If you forgive men their

trespasses, your heavenly Father also will forgive

you; but if you do not forgive men their trespasses,

neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.” It

is impossible, of course, to earn God’s forgiveness

or put Him in our debt by anything that we do.

Before His infinite holiness, we stand in constant

need of mercy and grace. At the same time, it

impossible to open ourselves to receive His mercy

and grace if we do not extend forgiveness to those

who have wronged us.

If we ask for the Lord’s forgiveness and refuse

to forgive others, we are in the false position of

those who want something for themselves but will

not give it their neighbours. That is a form of

selfishness that reflects a lack of love for those in

whom we encounter Him every day of our lives. It

is a form of idolatry in which we imagine that we

are serving a false god who simply does our

bidding rather than a Lord Who calls us to die to

self as we share more fully in His life. Forgiveness

is not some kind of commodity that can be hoarded

greedily. It is ultimately a divine energy of the Lord

in Whom we participate by grace. If we refuse to

forgive others, we refuse to be healed,

transformed, and illumined like an iron left in

the fire of the divine glory. We refuse to be truly

in communion with Christ; indeed, we refuse Him.

But if we forgive, even as we acknowledge the

imperfection of our efforts to control our thoughts,

words, and deeds toward those who have offended

us, we open ourselves in humility to become more

like our Savior in holiness by the power of His

grace.

Like the rest of the Christian life, forgiveness is

not simply a matter of how we feel about God, our

neighbours, or ourselves. It is not about whether

Page 9: Катедрa Святого Йосафата · remove from us any pharisaical hypocrisy in fasting, and banish all false sorrow. Drive from us all pride in our self-denial and moderation

9

thoughts of past

wrongs or future fears

pop into our heads. It

is not about whether

we particularly like

someone else.

Forgiveness occurs

when our vision of

those who have

wronged us is

clarified or restored

such that we see them

not in terms of past

wrongs, but as those

who bear the image and likeness of God. Only our

inflamed passions keep us from seeing our

neighbours this way, for pride tempts us to hold

on to anger and judgment that quickly condemn

anyone who has ever dared to cross us.

The “quarreling and jealousy” that St. Paul

associates with “the works of darkness” will never

end in our own souls if we do not find healing from

such distorted desires. That process of healing is a

way of speaking about putting “on the armour of

light,” of “put[ting] on the Lord Jesus Christ, and

mak[ing] no provision for the flesh, to gratify its

desires.” “Flesh” in this sense refers to our corrupt

humanity, enslaved to death and the war of the

passions within us. Adam and Eve were cast from

Paradise when they stripped themselves naked of

the divine glory by their prideful disobedience.

They diminished themselves to a life focused on

“mak[ing]..provision for the flesh, to gratify its

desires.” We do not have to look very closely at our

world or into our own souls in order to see that we

have followed our first parents on a path out of

Paradise. When their son Cain murdered his

brother Abel, it became abundantly clear how

powerful the passions are at destroying human

relationships as God intended them to be, even

within our own families.

If we are truly in Christ, the New Adam in Whom

all the corruptions of the first Adam are set right,

we must be in the processing of healing from the

self-centered desires that separate us from Him and

one another. The weeks of Lent provide us with

profound opportunities

to open even the darkest

corners of our lives to

His brilliant light. But

no matter how strictly we

fast, how fervently we

pray, or how generously

we give to the needy, we

will be unable to receive

God’s forgiveness if we

do not forgive one

another. That is the clear

teaching of Christ in

today’s gospel lesson.

What greater sign is there of our brokenness than

how easily we offend, harm, and disregard one

another? Indeed, we often enjoy doing so and come

up with all kinds of reasons to justify hateful

thoughts, words, and actions toward others. At

Forgiveness Vespers this evening, we will

personally bow before one another as we ask for

and extend forgiveness to everyone in the parish.

We begin our journey toward the deep mystery of

Christ’s death and resurrection with humility and

reconciliation. Since none of us has lived as

faithfully as possible, we have all weakened one

another spiritually, for we are members of one

Body in Christ. Now is the time to grant to one

another the forgiveness that we ask from the Lord

as we prepare to follow Him to the ultimate

manifestation of His forgiving love in the cross and

empty tomb.

Instead of wasting time and energy by judging

others or holding grudges this Lent, we must focus

on participating as fully as possible in the

restoration of the human person that Christ has

brought to the world. Since we have put Him on in

baptism, we must live in a way that reflects and

reveals His mercy and blessing. The Lord is very

clear about what this means: If we want

forgiveness for our sins, we must forgive others

for their offenses against us. The prodigal son had

no claim to restoration as a son, and he knew that,

but the overwhelming love of his father healed the

deep wounds that the young man’s behavior had

caused. If we want to open ourselves to the

Page 10: Катедрa Святого Йосафата · remove from us any pharisaical hypocrisy in fasting, and banish all false sorrow. Drive from us all pride in our self-denial and moderation

10

unfathomable mercy of our Heavenly Father, we

must become channels of that same mercy to

others, despite our unworthiness. If we are truly

“partakers of the divine nature” by grace, our

Lord’s forgiveness will become characteristic of

who we are. (2 Pet. 1:4) Like an iron left in the fire

takes on the qualities of the fire and conveys heat

and light to other objects, those who truly share in

Christ’s life will share what they have received

with others, especially those they are tempted not

to forgive.

Like prayer, fasting, and almsgiving, forgiveness

requires a commitment of the will to do what is

pleasing to God and is probably not immediately

appealing to us. Like these other practices,

forgiveness is a teacher of humility because it

reveals our weakness. Like the healing of any

passion, embracing forgiveness is a journey that

begins with actions of thought, word, and deed that

hardly seem sufficient to the task. God is gracious,

however, and accepts the small acts of which we

are capable. We cooperate with His grace as we do

what we can to turn our attention away from the

remembrance of past wrongs, to hold our tongues

when we are tempted to remind people of their

failings, and to say “I forgive you” even when we

have a long way to go in fully embracing the

meaning of those words.

That should not be surprising, of course, because

forgiveness is our participation in God’s

forgiveness. Before His infinite holiness, we

cannot claim to have mastered forgiveness or to

have accomplished anything simply by our own

power. For us who are so accustomed to the

darkness, it will be uncomfortable to open our eyes

just a bit to the brilliant light. For us who are so

addicted to our self-centered desires, it will seem

impossible not to gratify them. But when we know

our own weakness, then we will know how much

we need His gracious strength, which conquers

even the tomb. This Lent let us open ourselves to

the Lord’s grace by showing His mercy to others,

especially those who have offended us. There is no

other way to follow Christ to His Passion and the

brilliant glory of His Kingdom.

Тропарi і кондаки

Scientia et Fides».

CREDO

Page 14: Катедрa Святого Йосафата · remove from us any pharisaical hypocrisy in fasting, and banish all false sorrow. Drive from us all pride in our self-denial and moderation

14
