A Qualitative Journey: From Methodolatry to Post-Humanism

Associate Professor Paul Rhodes

Clinical Psychology Unit

University of Sydney

….tell my own story as a family therapist and qualitative researcher to exemplify the concordance between the epistemology and practice of both

….introduce you to the varied qualitative research methods that are available

……explore new philosophical positions beyond dialogism, including metamodernism and post-humanism and discuss their implications for family therapy research

…introduce you to clinical or therapy fields that share the same values as family therapy but are not often discussed in our ‘discourse community’

…share some research findings in these fields

ICQI Chicago“a pedagogy of wakefulness”

Research as a personal and philosophical inquiry not a method’s driven pursuit

Research as an act of resistance against neo-liberal culture

Research as interpretative not just descriptive

Research that engages with problems out their in the world not out their in the literature

Dissemination that is participatory and beyond peer review

Methodology that is designed retrospectively

Research that aims to uncovering hidden voices

“inquiries that provide a moral authority to move people to struggle and resist oppression”(Denzin & Giardina, 2015, p. 12)

“What are educators going to do... to make sure that they do not succumb to the authoritarian forces circling the University, waiting for the resistance to stop, and the lights to go out. Resistance is no longer an option, it is a necessity”(Giroux, 2015, p.201)

“For the)post-humanist, however, this blurring of man and machine is only part of a more significant shift. We must entertain the possibility that our mind and body may not be separate, implying that we may actually be the body in which we dwell. The ‘ghost in the machine’ is dead, but so are all other sorts of distinctions. LGBT rights demand that we are malefemale rather than either/or. Animal rights can only be built on an acknowledgment that we are one of many species. The debate about cybertherapy would probably be pretty irrelevant to this group. I can hear them saying, “let the man-machines get on with it”!

restoring the balance: Martin Buber and the Left

Does social contructionism render phenomenology invalid?

Is empathy, intersubjectivity and dialogical existentialism now suspect?

How do you teach students discourse analysis if they haven't learned thematic analysis or grounded theory?

Are students with lived experience of ‘mental health problems’ more challenging to supervise?

How do we deconstruct the left? Is there a victim mentality?

When should we have disruption and when dialogue?
