Regina Scale Modellers – Feb 2009

Words of Wisdom and Inspiration from the Right Honourable Michael Evans, Club President:

Hello everyone:Now that the cold weather has returned, we all should have plenty of time to get plastic built in anticipationof upcoming events. Are you one of the few continually hacked over not receiving the Antenna? Well be hacked no longer! Fornow the Antenna is available on the club web page. Thanks to Al Magnus the web page guy, and Dave Kappthe Antenna guy for working this out. I realize the schedule shown on the web site has been screwed up latelycausing confusion as to build nights and theme nights, but hopefully we have gotten that straightened aroundtoo. The March meeting will be a theme night, with the theme being 'What I don't normally build'. This isusually a lot of fun, so everybody bring your most off the wall item.Be watching for the unveiling of the HMCS Regina, set to take place at city hall on May 4. The HMCSRegina K234 was a RCN Flower class corvette that was torpedoed and sunk on Aug 8 1944 with the loss of30 crew members. Back on Remembrance Day 2007 we were approached by the Friends of HMCS Regina totake on the project of building this model. They are a local historical group that works to preserve thememory of the old ship, and support the modern one and her crew. Besides myself, Cam Barker and AlMagnus have contributed many hours to this project and it is finally near completion. Many thanks to them.Hopefully we will have the model out to a club meeting before we turn it over. The Majestics car show will take place April 25 & 26, and once again we have been invited. No theme as ofyet that I know of, but I would presume it to be something related to cars (these things don't get past me letme tell you). We have found a Majestics sponsor for our show this spring. Dave Wellings of Cara DawnTransport has agreed to sponsor us again. Very good of him in that the trucking industry is suffering as muchas most other industries are.Should you happen to be at the airport be sure to check out the club's items on display in the display cases ofthe Canadian Aviation Historical Society,(CAHS) and by 600 Wing (Regina), Air Force Association ofCanada (AFAC). Several club members have agreed to temporarily loan items of significance to Canadiancivil and military aviation, and with a Saskatchewan connection where possible. Neil Hill is co-ordinatingthis, and it promises to get us some good public exposure. So all in all things have been, and will continue to be busy for the next little while. So grab something fromthe inventory of waiting-to-be-built kits that we all keep (some more than others), get it built, bring it to ameeting, and keep the club and the hobby alive. Be seeing you all.Michael EvansClub President

February General Meeting Highlights

Finally an official BUILD NIGHT. And man did we build! Well sort of. Sometimes hanging aroundwatching other guys build is just as exciting. I, myself only got one piece glued on my McLaren M8Bbut that’s a step in the right direction. See the pictures below and you will see what you missed if youweren’t there, Ed.

Also in attendance (according to the office attendance record) was Colin Kunkle, Len Schmidt (witha guest Ron Gill), Gene Stacyshyn, James Lory, Curfew & Leith James, Ted McPherson, Dave Kapp,Michael Shiplett, Dave Porter, Greg McKinnon, Cam Barker, Neil Hill, Brian Miller and our fearlessleader Mike Evans. Below are photos of some of the built kits brought out on the cold February night.

Above we have double dose of Colin Kunkle’s CF-18’s (A &B) Hornets. One was built for a guy thatactually got to fly in one of those and the other was built for fun. And to the right is Curfew’s Rangerthat he was working on that night. Curfew only builds for fun.

Here’s a shot of the James twins inaction. Curfew holds court whiletinkering with his Ford Ranger asLeith poses for the camera.

Here we have Ted McPhersonworking on his Russian militarytruck model. The instructionsare in Russian. To Ted’s left(our right) is the Hasegwa P-40Warhawk “Egg plane” Tedbrought to the Primer Table.Looking good, ComradeMcPherson!

Ahh, the famousPanther II brought outby the infamous DavePorter. Behind it youwill see Dave’s WIP(work in progress)Datsun 510. Datsunsare now called Nissans.Big mistake, shouldhave stayed withDatsun. At least itseasy to make “Datsun”jokes.

And this is Dave Porter’s 1/48 HE-100. Looks like it’s been through a war orsomething.

Greg McKinnon local gend’arme and early dragracing model aficionadobrought out his gorgeousshort wheelbase 60’s eradragster. This rail was notbuilt to replicate anyparticular car but is atypical vehicle that mighthave raced in the area inyears gone by. The astutereader will notice the SIR(Saskatoon InternationalRaceway) and Racecity(Calgary) decals that Greg

printed up on his owncomputer. He alsoprinted the tribalflames and Mooneyesdecals as well as afew others. Themodel itself is basedon the recent AMT/Model King releaseof the “Hemi-Sphere”which for somereason costs morethan other similarmodels. In addition tosubtle bodymodifications, Gregalso did someplumbing and wiringon the elephant.(Elephant is car-guytalk for a big Hemiengine. Note also theelephant decal on thecowl). Very cute.

Next Month’s Theme:TANKS!

Send the Antenna pictures of your tanks and we’ll put them in the special March Tanks Edition. Besure to include a few (or a lot) of words describing the model worded in such a way that we can justcopy and paste them in with the pictures. If nobody sends any tank pictures we’ll have another carissue so do your best.

And a dragster of this quality should never bewithout a kick-ass trailer. Here we have itnesting in a modified trailer that came withthe recently released AMT/Model KingNostalgic Drag Racing Set which alsoincluded an STP Cougar funny car and aBronco to pull it all around with. Greg assuresus that those builds will be soon on their wayas well. The tire rack on the front of the trailerwas narrowed to fit without overhanging andsome extra “baggage” was omitted. It has realjewellery chains on the front of the trailer andcheck out the license plate on the back. Ooh-la-la!

If you direct your attention to the rightyou will see a full frontal view of thedragster/trailer combo. Note the crisplettering of the tires on the rack. Hereone can also see the jewellery safetychains that will eventually be attachedto the Bronco. Greg says he plans onadding some tools and equipment to theplatform at the front as well. And asthey say in therapy, “thanks for sharing,Greg!”

And now…

This month we proudly feature a variety of engines built by avariety of RSM members. Enjoy.

Here are a couple shots of a 1/25 Peterbuilt that Ted built. Or is it a 1/25 Tedbuilt that Peter built?Either way it’s a lot of motor. We at the Antenna can hardly wait to see the completed truck.

And below are 8 incredible engines from our own Ron Gall:1. V6 from a Tamiya Alfa Romeo racer. Detailed with Mesh, carbon fibre decals, foil and decals.2. Hilborn injected Super Stock Hemi. Aluminium injector stacks.3. Top Fuel dual plug Hemi, shoe horned into a Lindberg '64 Dodge4. Parts box Hemi, nothing too fancy.5. Hidden under the Turbo Intercoolers and rear suspension lies a jewel of an engine. Box stockfrom the Tamiya Ferrari F40 kit.6. One of my favourite engines, from the T-Rantula kit. Wired and headers detailed withaluminium tubing.7. Pretty basic flathead Ford with Offenhauser heads in a 49 Merc.8. From the strange file. A nailhead Buick with Weber carbs.

Here is a big honkin’ 1/6th scale1948 Ford flathead by Hawk puttogether by either Curfew orLeith. It is currently on display atCanadian Tire.

Above we have shots of a Saturn V engine and a space shuttle engine, both by Mike Evans.Mike says the Saturn V is after market resin and he didn’t sound too crazy about it but we atthe Antenna just love it. Nice work, Mr. President!

Did you really think that we’d have aspotlight on motors and not include EdKereluk? This is Ed’s unfinished 1932Ford hot rod. Engine is a 1957 Chrysler392cid Hemi. Engine is fully plumbedwired and detailed with aftermarket andscratch built parts. Carburetor linkage isaftermarket and scratch built. Sparkplugcovers on valve covers are scratch built.

And finally…the engine of the car thatEd Kereluk said Dave Kapp would neverbuild…the Accurate Miniatures McLarenM8B. This thing has more pipes andhoses than Vintage Vinyl (if you knowwhat I mean).

Curfew James, RSM member andemployee of Canadian Tire North was ableto talk his way into letting the club displayits car models in this beautiful glasscabinet. It is located in the customerwaiting room in the service department.People sometimes spend hours therewaiting and the kiddies play area gets oldfast. What better way to kill an hour thanto check out some cool car models?Apparently feedback has been very goodand besides, like Curfew says: “We have acaptive audience.” The cabinet itself isglass on all sides and was quitechallenging to photograph. A cardboardpanel was placed behind the back of it forthe picture.

A close up of some models. Ah gee wouldja look at that-they all belong to Dave Kapp. Inthe lower left you can see the Modeller of the Year plaque. Dave Kapp was Modeller ofthe Year once.

This is a letter Neil passed on from a certain Mr. Erik Mombeeck out Belgium way. It seems to bedirected at airplane guys but it looks quite interesting to me as well. Not quite as interesting as

watching John Force argue with his wife that won’t let him live in her house and their three daughtersevery week on A&E but its close. Anyway here is Erik’s appeal and some pictures.

Dear Sir,We would like to inform you that we are close to launching a major project of mine: publishing an English edition of mytwo latest Luftwaffe fighter unit histories. These works are entitled "In the Skies of France", a Chronicle of JG 2(Volume 1) and "Storming the Bombers", a chronicle of the Luftwaffe's fourth fighter wing, JG 4.

JG 2 was considered by many as one of the leading Luftwaffe fighter units in the West, spearheading the Blitzkriegagainst France & the Low Countries in 1940. JG 2 pilots were among the leading German fighter aces during the Battleof Britain. JG 2 reinforced its reputation in defending northern France against RAF and later USAAF raids from 1941 asthe Allies 'leant into Europe'. Volume 1 covers the rebirth of the Luftwaffe from 1934 until the end of 1940.JG 4 fought principally in Rumania and Italy during 1943. It was one of only three Luftwaffe fighter Geschwader todeploy an assault or 'storm' Gruppe against the huge USAAF bomber streams that were launched against the Reich.'Storm' pilots undertook in many instances to bring down bombers by whatever means possible, including ramming asa last resort.

The JG 2 volume is now back from the printers and awaiting publication. It is exceedingly well printed. The JG 4 tomewill be ready very soon. We then will ship both volumes in bulk to the USA and the UK in order to keep postal prices aslow as possible.

If you want to put amodel or two ondisplay just contactCurfew and he’ll makeit happen. The onlyrules are you have tohave a small signdescribing your modeland no Chevys. Justkidding.

Our translator is Neil Page, whose work on the two volume history of JG300 (Eagle Editions) was acclaimed by many enthusiasts.

I feel sure that you will be very interested in these books. If this is indeed the case and you would like more detailsplease drop me an e-mail to reserve your copies.

You can also visit my web-site: www.luftwaffe.be .Wishing you all the very best for 2009, I remainYours in friendship,
