A note from the desk of the Principal: Cheryl Naidoo

Term 2, Issue No.5

Dear Parents

We are extremely excited that our pupils have started their iPad lessons

learning about native apps with Miss Rose Leak. The Grade Rs learnt

about Drawing and Telling a story using their iPads. This will help pupils

to listen to themselves and improve their fluency in speaking and

reading. Grade 1-3 worked on Interactive Story Creations. This will

increase their level of learning through interaction and participation.

Grade 4 -7 were challenged on Keynote, a programme that incorporates

graphs, animations and images in a presentation format.

Our teachers are undergoing training in the afternoons on using the

iPad to enhance their teaching. This will help pupils prepare for their

future careers, reach diversity in teaching styles, encourage

collaboration, prepare pupils for the real-world environment and helps

students stay engaged.

Summit Preparatory hosted a very successful Impromptu

Speech Evening on Wednesday. Pupils were workshopped in

the first hour and then participated in a competition.

Congratulations to Amkela Msimangt for coming 3rd in the

competition. Thank you to Kim Hall

for the planning of the event. Our

charismatic adjudicator Itumeleng

Molatsi-Locke was entertaining,

enlightening and inspiring. It was a

beneficial experience for pupils,

teachers and parents.

Kind regards

Cheryl Naidoo

Enrichment Week 2017

Enrichment Week comes around every year at the end of the third term. However, the planning is immense

and extensive, so we would like to get a head start to make it a memorable experience for our learners.

If you have any suggestions, or contacts that present child-orientated workshops, talks, activities etc., please

email our Enrichment Week coordinator, Mrs. Honeywill, or Mrs. Wright.

Learning Spaces

As was mentioned in previous newsletters, Summit teachers are embarking on a journey of creating flexible and creative learning spaces in their classrooms. This journey is not one that the teacher will be taking on their own, but rather a journey that includes the children in their class, as the space needs to be owned by all who use it.

It is for this reason that we ask for your help. Children who take responsibility for their own learning space and feel at ease within that space, will ultimately take responsibility for their learning too.

If you have any furniture or items that you no longer use or need, please could we kindly ask that you donate it to your child’s grade to be upcycled or made into something exciting that can be utilised in the classroom.

Examples include:

• Couches

• Ottomans

• Cushions – covers or inners

• Bookshelves

• Tables – any shape and size

• Crates • Beanbags

• Containers

Whatever you have, we can use! If you have any items in mind, please contact

your child’s class teacher.

We will be implementing our learning spaces on Friday, the 23rd of June. Thank you in advance for your

generosity, support and involvement.

Pre-School - HOD: Heather Stonestreet

Thank you to the parents who attended our Parent Information Evening on Tuesday. We are grateful to Bronwynn Saunders and Olivia Thomet for sharing valuable and interesting information with us. We are always looking for ideas and input to help us help our children, and to understand them better. We wrapped up our Favourite Book Characters theme in the Pre-Primary, with the Grade R’s celebrating with a Mad Hatters Tea Party. Each Grade R child made their own hat and it was wonderful to observe how creative and innovative these little people are! We had a happy and memorable day! Heather Stonestreet

The Importance of outdoor play. Young children need the opportunity to use their whole body and develop their gross motor skills. It is only when they have mastered these skills that they will be able to develop their fine motor skills e.g. holding a pencil. Through play, children explore and learn about the world. While doing so, they acquire the gross motor skills they need to successfully navigate their surroundings. A great place for children to practice and develop motor skills is on the playground. Slides are a great motor activity, as they require the child to climb stairs, balance on one foot and shift their weight during stair climbing. Slides also help develop the vestibular system, as the body is in motion, the head can be placed in different positions. Monkey bars help to develop upper body strength as well as coordination. If the child hangs upside down on the bars it also provides great vestibular input. Getting outside is a great opportunity to get some exercise and make friends while having fun. The open spaces allow the children to get fresh air, and sunshine and this helps them sleep better at night. Dominique Gambale

Foundation Phase – HOD: Michelle van Rensburg

What we have been up to in Foundation Phase…

In assembly this week, Mrs. Wright spoke to the children about Self-Management skills. These self-management skills refer to children working on their organisational skills, self-reflection skills and affective skills.

Upcycle club

Upcycle club made rainbow bubbles this week.

Grade 1

The focus on Core Skills has led to the children working with more independence from the teacher and learning from their peers. Here are some photos of the Gr. 1s working together in class.

Grade 2

The Gr. 2s presented their prepared speeches in class this week. Their speech was about what they would like to be when they grow up. The children made posters to accompany the speech and even though speaking in front of an entire class can be quite nerve-racking, the children embraced the task and enjoyed presenting their speeches.

Grade 3

The Gr. 3 children enjoyed their very first iPad lesson in Computers this week. They made interactive stories using an App called Toontastic.

Foundation Phase concert

The preparation for our Foundation phase concert is well on its way. The children have been hard at work practising their dances and working on their lines. By now your class teacher has sent out a letter letting you know which decade your child’s class is dancing to and what costume they will be wearing. If you are unsure of what your child needs or you would like to help with costumes, please speak to your child’s class teacher.

InterSen Phase – HOD: Tammy Wright

Dear Parents,

Our focus this week in assembly, was strengthening and exercising one’s Self-

Management Skills. A skill-set which one is required to continuously work on,

whether child or adult.

Previously, our Senior children indicated that this is an area they feel they need to

improve and need some assistance with.

At school, we continue to help our children manage their time and tasks

better, with the aid of homework, task and assignment breakdowns which are

discussed together in class. Academic feedback is constructive and helps

learners to reconsider what they have learned, planning their next steps to

develop their personal learning and abilities. Lastly, as teachers, we always

strive to help children manage their habits and behaviour positively, whilst

encouraging resilience, perseverance, self-motivation and emotional well-

being.

We would appreciate it if parents could reinforce Self-Management Skills at

home, ensuring children plan and take responsibility for their studying,

homework, assignments, packing the necessary items for the following school

day, and developing an overall positive attitude etc.

thoroughly enjoyed by all.

On Wednesday, 31st of May, several AdvTech Schools, together with their English teachers and principals,

convened at Summit Prep for an informative, entertaining and fun-spirited afternoon and evening of public

speaking workshops and an impromptu speech competition. The workshops were presented by the talented

and charismatic, Tumi Malatsi-Locke.

Participants were selected Grade 7 learners from each school. The representatives from Summit Prep were;

Calvi Rea, Amkela Msimang and Kendra Chettiar. An accomplished speaker with a vibrant personality and a

flair for entertaining; Amkela Msimang, was awarded 3rd place for her impromptu speech on cellphones. Well

done to all the participants!

Thank you to Mrs. Kim Hall for coordinating both enriching events for our Grade 7’s.

Introduction of iPads in ICT

This week, Miss Leak introduced iPads in ICT. Grades 4 to 7 will be

learning how to use the native apps; keynote, pages, numbers, iMovie

and Garage band. ICT lessons will be alternated between using the

computers and the iPads. There will also be a strong focus on digital

citizenship this term, which incorporates how to stay safe on social

media websites and the internet in general, and what to do if you feel

unsafe or experience cyber-bullying.

The children thoroughly enjoyed their first practical iPad lesson this week!

The proof is in the happy faces…
