1-180 St. Thomas of Villanova SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JANUARY 18, 2015 A Note from Fr. Joe…. As I mentioned at the 10:30am Mass last Sunday, one of the sights I like least is an empty Christmas tree laying on its side at a curb waiting to be picked up. It’s such a vivid reminder that the wonderful season of Christmas is over. But we also sense that it’s time to move on – in our lives and in our faith. We’re given this opportunity in the Church year called “Ordinary Time” to focus on the daily task of growing as disciples of Christ. And, as our Readings for this 2 nd Sunday in Ordinary Time remind us, this begins with listening for God’s call in our lives and responding. Notice in the 1 st Reading that Samuel answers the Lord, “Speak, for your servant is listening.” In the Gospel, Andrew not only listens, but he also then shares the Good News with his brother Simon Peter and “brought him to Jesus.” How might we bring Christ to others during Ordinary Time? We’re given many opportunities, especially on this Martin Luther King, Jr. weekend. Though the Parish Office will be closed for the holiday on Monday, it will be a busy Day of Service for many as we reach out to the broader community, making Jesus’ love for all people known through our words and actions. Pope Francis says it so eloquently, “It means putting innocence in the place of malice, love in the place of force, humility in the place of pride, service in the place of prestige. It is good work!” Of course, as a stewardship community, we know that the good work doesn’t stop at one day, that the call and response is a life-long process – taken one ordinary step at a time. In our journey, the sacraments aid us and nourish us. These “treasures of our faith” help us to listen, to discern, and to respond to God’s call. That’s why we’re having a parish retreat that will delve into the sacraments as we move from Ordinary Time into the Lenten Season in February. Again, see the reminder below. Finally, I’m happy and pleased to announce that Mrs. Tara A. Penza has accepted the position of Director of our Religious Education Program. As you know, she came on board as Interim Director at the beginning of November and has since proven to be the knowledgeable and personable asset that her background indicated that she would be. A Note from Fr. January 18, 2015

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Fulfilling the Church’s mission of mercy and the gospel call to love others as we love God, the Catholic Relief Services (CRS) Collection funds six Catholic agencies that work for the benefit of our brothers and sisters around the world. In providing humanitarian aid, resettling displaced individuals and families, and advocating on behalf of victims of atrocities such as human trafficking, the organizations supported by the CRS Collection act from their belief that every individual is an equal heir of Christ's love and care. The annual Catholic Relief Services Collection challenges American Catholics to put their faith into action and to see “Jesus in disguise” in the faces of the poor, and to support ongoing efforts to respond to their needs. The funds collected support vital Catholic programs that share in the Catholic mission of promoting the sacredness of human life. A small amount from the collection is retained by the Archdiocese to help cover local efforts to promote the collection. The collection will be taken up in the parishes of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia the weekend of January 24 and 25, 2015. The American Catholic community and the Archdiocese of Philadelphia in particular, have always responded very generously to this annual collection. I am grateful to you for your compassionate response. May you be blessed for your faithfulness to living the Gospel and recognizing Jesus in those in need. Sincerely yours in Christ,

Our Volunteers are the “Hospitality” in the

Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN)

at St. Thomas of Villanova Parish

Homeless families come to St. Thomas of Villanova at a vulnerable time in their lives when they are without a roof over their heads. Most are single mothers who do not have adequate employment, the skills necessary to provide for their families, or the support of loved ones. At St. Thomas of Villanova we provide a spirit of warmth and hospitality 5 times a year for one week at a time. Through the kindess of our volunteers we are able to supply a safe and welcoming environment for families to spend their evenings and nights at our Parish Center. During the day, families use a Life Skills Center in Norristown and return to St. Thomas of Villanova in the evening.

OVERNIGHT HOST VOLUNTEERS ARE URGENTLY NEEDED FOR THE WEEK OF JANUARY 25TH

Here’s How You Can Help: * Provide an evening meal during the week the families are at St. Thomas of Villanova * Act as an evening host for a three-hour period in the evening or the weekend. * Spend the night so that you are available to assist with any problems that arise. * At the start of the week, help set up the guests’ room. * At the end of the week, help dismantle the rooms, move the guests, or wash linen. Teams of two or more people usually carry out all these functions, so you won’t be by yourself. We urge you to consider extending St. Thomas of Villanova Hospitality to families in our community. The overnight shift begins at 9:00pm and ends at 6:30am.

THE LANGUAGE OF

CONSECRATED LIFE

The consecrated life is a remarkably diverse phenomenon within the Catholic Church. Because of the various kinds of communities, vocations, and charisms that we find in consecrated life it can sometimes be a challenge to understand terminology that describes this way of life. In our upcoming bulletins, we will provide a glossary that you may find helpful.

L.

Laity: Members of the Catholic Church who are neither ordained ministers nor consecrated religious. Lay Brother: An unpopular term today, lay Brothers are consecrated men who belong to a religious institute. They are “lay because they are neither ordained nor studying for ordination. They profess the vows of their institute and as such belong to the consecrated or religious state of life. (This glossary was developed by the Conference of Major Superiors of Men (CMSM).

WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE AN AUGUSTINIAN VOLUNTEER?

Also, we'll have Spirit Wear for sale, with great new wearables and other new SCJN-imprinted items. Last, there will be wall tiles available to purchase and paint/personalize for the school's exterior as a fundraiser. The proceeds from the tiles will be used to purchase frames and pictures to beautify the interior of the school. We hope to see you for all the great activities that day!
