Outrigger Resorts wins Best Hotel/Resort Group at AFTA National Travel Industry Awards

By Dr. Richard Kelley

This week I was thrilled and proud to learn that Outrigger Resorts was named Best Hotel/Resort Group at the Australian Federation of Travel Agents’ (AFTA) National Travel Industry Awards for Excellence in a competitive field of finalists that included global players like Accor Hotels, Club Med, Starwood Hotels & Resorts and other leading hotel chains.

AFTA represents the majority of travel agents in Australia and aims to stimulate and promote travel while upholding its members’ interests. The awards acknowledge the best of the best in the Australian travel industry with categories covering travel agencies and individual consultants, as well as the various suppliers that support them and their businesses. The event provides encouragement and recognition to the businesses and individuals that demonstrate outstanding service, marketing excellence and business insight. Representatives from our Sydney regional sales office, Andrew Gee (regional director of sales and marketing – Australia and New Zealand), Maria Alaveras

(sales manager – retail travel, wholesale and industry partners) and Juliet Hudson (sales manager – destination weddings, groups and M.I.C.E.), were on hand July 16 at The Pavilion Darling Harbour in Sydney to accept the award and honor. “I can’t begin to say how proud I am of our Australia-based team, particularly Maria Alaveras who has an outstanding relationship with the travel industry community,” said Andrew. “This really is a tremendous acknowledgement of our hard work and commitment to this market, and we are grateful to

the industry for getting behind us to make this award possible. We are a very close team with enormous passion for a wonderful values-led brand.” Mark Simmons, vice president sales and marketing, Asia Pacific, said the award was enormously significant because the Australian outbound market is highly important to all of Outrigger’s

Outrigger Blood Drive“Be a hero. It’s in your blood!”By Ashley Cabradilla

At some point in our lives, more than half of us will need blood, so maintaining a safe and adequate community blood supply is important. By donating blood, you’ll potentially save up to three lives. Everyday in Hawai‘i, hundreds of patients count on volunteer blood donors for their survival. The process is safe and usually takes about an hour with the actual collection of blood taking only five to eight minutes. If you are interested in donating and would like to make an appointment for Outrigger’s upcoming Blood Drive, please contact Ashley Cabradilla at 921-6972 or [email protected]. You may also call the Blood Bank of Hawaii directly at 848-4770 or schedule your own appointment on eDonor (www.BBH.org, sponsor code: 1865).

Donate blood (now through Sept. 5, 2016) and you’ll be entered to win in Blood Bank of Hawai‘i’s weekly drawing.*One entry per person per donation; double entries for first-time donors

Malia OHANA day with familyBy Nora Weatherwax

Summer is the perfect season to share a few hours of fun and food with our Outrigger and own ‘ohana (family). The Luana Wing rooftop at the OHANA Waikiki Malia by Outrigger® was the perfect venue to create a festive carnival atmosphere. We had picture-taking with Sunny OHANA 2016 and generous contributions to our potluck lunch. On the menu was Filipino miki (noodle soup), pork with kabocha (Asian winter squash) pumpkin, chicharron (fried pork belly) and pork gisantes (tomato-based stew), Chinese noodles, shrimp spring rolls, fried rice, fried shrimp, pasta salad with shrimp, chili, SPAM® musubi, fried chicken, fresh veggies with shrimp, tempura (Japanese dish battered and deep- fried) sweet potato, sushi, hot dogs, chips and

dips and pizza. Dessert did not disappoint with apple pie, chocolate chip cookies, Rice Krispy treats and chocolate haupia (coconut milk-based Hawaiian dessert) pie. There were games galore: Spin the Wheel, Operation, Pictionary, Checkers and Chess. The rooftop provided ample space to play Hot Potato, Musical Chairs and Donut Eating. Even spectators had a great time watching the action! For those who love the limelight—and there were many—there was “Malia Red Note” karaoke. This first annual event was a fantastic way to bring our families from home and our families at work together for fun and fellowship. We are already planning for next year!

Congratulations and mahalo, Andrew, Maria and Juliet!
