A Message from our PastorA Message from our Pastor
Dear Parishioners, I recently read an article by Nathan Mitchell, a highly regarded liturgical scholar in North America, who wrote about “croodling.” The word, and the action it connotes, seems to derive from an Old English Word, crowdle that means to creep close together as children around a fire, or chickens under a hen. Mitchell was describing croodling as what people in the northern hemisphere do between late November and mid-March. They hunker down, drawing their bodies in against the darkness, sleet and snow; to huddle, clinging to others for warmth and companionship. (Nathan Mitchell, “The Amen Corner,” Worship 78, no 2 [March 2004])
This notion of croodling is one to which we can readily relate this past Christmas, when, after several months of mildly warm weather, we had a beautiful, hearty winter – one that
invited us to hunker down with family and friends in a festive, convivial spirit to celebrate the birth of the Sun of Justice who brings light and warmth to the whole world. As it always seems to, the Christmas season passed with great alacrity as we now enter into that post-holiday slump (for lack of a better word) when we return the Christmas decorations to their storage places (so they can croodle for the next 11 months), pay the credit card bills, and linger over the meaningful memories that concluded the year 2017 and launched us into 2018. I pray it will be a good year for all of us.
I would like to thank all our parishioners for, what I felt was, one of the most beautiful Christmas celebrations I have experienced at St. Joan of Arc Parish. The Christmas offertory envelopes continue coming in, leading me to believe we will reach our seasonal budget for this year. The church was exquisitely adorned with all natural foliage – Christmas trees that were freshly cut, red and white poinsettias artistically arranged, and our Nativity figures lovingly arranged to inspire us.
The Liturgical Ministers exceeded their usual excellence -- our music director, accompanists, instrumentalists, cantors, choir members and all who united their voices in joyful song. All the Liturgical Ministers brought great dignity to the Christmas Rites – our liturgical coordinator, secretaries, bulletin editor, sacristan, greeters, ushers, servers, Lectors, Communion Ministers, deacon and priests too. The maintenance staff kept our parish campus beautiful, clean and safe. It takes a village!
Those of you who participated in the Liturgies at which I presided heard me speak of bells and how they are used to announce glad tidings and to call us to attention. As one 6th grade student noted, however, we also ring bells to get God’s attention. In an effort to restore the use of our four exterior bells, I suggested that people contribute any loose bills or change they may have had on them at the time. People responded generously, with a total of $1,200. More significantly, there was the affirmation I received from so many people that we should indeed re-locate and reactivate our bells, for there is something about these sacramental instruments that resonates deep within in our Catholic psyches. We know that they serve a spiritual purpose, even if we are unable to give expression to what that purpose is.
And so I offer the following sonnet by Malcolm Guite for a New Year Reflection:

New Year’s Day: Church Bells Not the bleak speak of mobile messages, Not the soft chime of synthesized reminders, Not texts, not pagers, data packages, Not satnav or locators ever find us, As surely, soundly, deeply as these bells That sound and find and call us all at once. ‘Ears of my ears’ can hear, my body feels This call to pray that is itself a dance. So ring them out in joy and jubilation, Sound them in sorrow tolling for the lost, O let them wake the Church and rouse the nation, A sleeping lion stirred to life at last, Begin again they sing, begin again, A ring and rhythm answered from within.
Blessings in the New Year,

CLOUD OF WITNESSES The Saints Renew the Church
St. John Vianney is the patron saint of parish priests. This humble, simple, and holy man struggled greatly with his studies for the priesthood and was even let go as a seminarian. However, John Vianney persevered and abandoned himself into the hands of God. Eventually, he became a priest and was assigned to a parish that was considered the "Siberia" of his diocese. Through his holiness, John converted and changed the lives of countless souls. Soon, thousands flocked to the tiny town of Ars so that they could see this living saint and he could hear their confessions. John Vianney's holiness did not go unnoticed by Satan, however, who violently attacked this humble saint, mocking him for his piety. John Vianney persevered and led souls to Christ. He died on August 4, 1859 and was canonized in 1929. His body remains incorrupt on full display at the Basilica in Ars, France.

Setting of Mass Intentions In order to make dates for Mass intentions available to all parishioners, and to be able to offer Mass intentions for the recently deceased, the following policy will become effective immediately: A limit of five (5) annual Mass intentions will be
allowed per calendar year per family requesting. One additional Mass may be requested during the
year for a living intention or for someone recently deceased (i.e., one Mass may be offered for the individual for whom the intention is being requested).
The stipend for Masses is $10. The Diocese of Joliet will also accept Mass intentions
to be offered by our retired priests if your request for Masses at the parish exceeds the annual limit.
If you have any questions, please call the Parish Office at 630-963-4500.

Here I Am, Lord Today marks the return of Sundays in Ordinary Time in the liturgical year. This period of Ordinary Time will last until Ash Wednesday, which begins the Season of Lent on February 14 this year. We mark this change in the liturgical season by returning to Mass of Light for the Gloria and the Mass Ordinary.
The proper Responsorial Psalm for today is Psalm 40. It is a Psalm that speaks of answering the Lord’s call. We are all called to serve, to carry the message of Good News to all the earth. We are reminded that we are called to do God’s will:
‘Here am I, Lord; I come to do your will.’ This week, let us always be aware of God calling us – just like he called Samuel in today’s first reading. And, may our response always be just like Samuel’s response – ‘Speak, for your servant is listening’. Have a blessed week! Jim Susic

Sing to the Lord Are you looking for something ‘new’ in this coming New Year? Consider join-ing our Parish Choir!
Our Parish Choir is always open to new members. This group rehearses on Tuesday evenings from 7:30pm to 9:30pm, and leads the music at the 9:30am liturgy on Sunday mornings. The Parish Choir is also the primary group that provides music for liturgies on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve/Day, Holy Week and Easter Trid-uum, and also for celebrations such as First Communion, Confirmation, and Graduation. This group sings a wide variety of styles of music, from chant and traditional choral anthems, to more-recent mu-sical compositions for the church. From a musical per-spective, there is ‘something for everyone’. A ‘solo’ voice is not required – just a commitment to attend most re-hearsals and liturgies, and a love of singing. If you enjoy singing and can make a fairly-regular com-mitment to rehearsals and Sunday liturgies, please con-sider joining this group. For further information, please contact Jim Susic, Direc-tor of Music, at 630-353-4529 or [email protected].
Media Ministry Volunteers Needed Our Media Ministry is in need of additional volunteers to make use of this technology during our liturgical celebrations. We currently use the laptop for the image of the day, plus also for selected lyrics during the Mass. We are looking for volunteers to assist with running the PowerPoint Slide Show which displays the appropri-ate images and lyrics during the weekend Masses. It is VERY EASY to use: prior experience with computers is helpful, but NOT required. The primary requirement for volunteers would be to arrive at least 15 minutes before the assigned liturgy. The instructions are scripted, so it is simply a matter of following the script to display the appropriate images/lyrics. We’d like to get a group of volunteers for each Mass, so that the responsibility does not fall too heav-ily upon just a few individuals. Please consider volunteering for this ministry. For additional information or to volunteer, please contact Jim Susic at [email protected].

Calling All Knitters, Crocheters, Quilters, and Sewers!
The Prayer Blanket Ministry is in need of more members who can either sew, knit, quilt, or crochet. The Prayer Blanket Ministry is a minis-try in which lap blankets are distributed to those who are seriously ill or who are undergoing surgery. They are knit, crocheted, quilted, or simply sewn by volunteers. The blankets are made by members of the group, blessed by a priest, prayed over by a Rosary group, tagged, wrapped, and distributed (either by mail or in person). Even during the making of the blanket, prayers are said for the future recipient, and, once the blanket has been delivered, the prayer group continues to hold the receiver in its petitions. The purpose of the Prayer Blanket Ministry is to bring relief and peace to the sick and suffering by letting the recipients know that they are not alone and that they are cared for by a faith community. As the recipients use the blankets, they know that they are covered in prayer and that God is with them as we pray for their healing. If you know of someone in need of a blanket or if you would like to be a part of this ministry, please contact Shirley or Dave Glaser at 630-971-2017.

Please be advised that each godparent is re-quired to submit a sponsor eligibility form prior to the parents receiving a date for their child's baptism. Every three years, parents are required to attend a meeting on the Sacrament of Baptism, held on the First Wednesday of the month at 7:00 PM in the Parish Center. Please call the Parish Office to register. Baptisms take place at 1:00 PM on the first and third Sunday of each month. On the fourth Sun-day of each month, baptisms are celebrated within the context of the 11:30 AM Mass. Becoming Catholic: We welcome any adult interested in becoming a Catholic to contact Dr. Joanne Kuttner at 630-353-4516 for infor-mation regarding the parish Catechumenate process. Catholics Returning Home: If you would like help coming back to your Catholic Faith, please call Michael Lewandowski at 630-353-4531. Marriages: Couples are asked to call the Parish Office before setting a date for the wedding or making other commitments. Registration and participation in the parish, by at least one party, for three months is required before a wedding date will be given. The diocese re-quires a minimum preparation time of six months between the first conference and the wedding. Sick Calls: Call the Parish Office anytime. Please let us know if anyone in your family is ill so that the priests might visit them. Funerals: Please make the arrangements with the church before any publication in the newspaper. Given the number of liturgical activi-ties on Saturdays, it is preferable to schedule funerals on weekdays if possible. However, no one will be refused a Saturday funeral unless there is a previously scheduled event or unless funerals are not permitted to be celebrated on that particular Saturday. Parish Membership: Registration forms can be obtained at the Parish Office or at the Resource Center located in the church lobby.
