I am happy to introduce to you a very innovative education programme specially designed for the manufacturing sector in India.

Leveraging on its long experience of providing high quality management education to practising managers, IIM Calcutta in collaboration with IIT Kanpur and IIT Madras launched the one year full time residential Post Graduate Programme for Executives for Visionary Leadership in Manufacturing (PGPEX-VLM) in August 2007. The PGPEX-VLM Programme was began launched under the aegis of the Government of India’s National Manufacturing Competitiveness Council (NMCC) and the Ministry of Human Resource Development with the support of industry.

The objective of this programme is to develop leaders for the manufacturing sector by equipping them with state of the art management techniques and skills with cutting edge technology awareness. These leaders are expected to steer Indian manufacturing industry to meet the challenges of global competition and establish India as a global manufacturing base. The objectives, content, curriculum and pedagogy have been jointly designed by IIM Calcutta, IIT Kanpur and IIT Madras in consultation with industry, Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), NMCC and the Ministry of HRD and in consultation with Professor Shoji Shiba, a world renowned authority in the field of manufacturing.

The Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh, during his visit to Japan in December 2006 signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Prime Minister of Japan for human resource development for promotion of manufacturing under which Japanese manufacturing management techniques and skills would be transferred to senior managers of Indian manufacturing industry. The Government of Japan, through the Japan International Cooperation Agency is providing support for the program by way of deputing Japanese manufacturing experts to teach in the Programme and facilitating students’ visits to Japanese universities and centres of manufacturing excellence.

The students of PGPEX-VLM have been selected through a meticulous assessment of merit and experience. The pioneering class of 30 is a remarkable blend of diversity, domain expertise, academic accomplishment and professional achievement. The average professional experience of the class is over 9 years. The diversity of the class is represented by professionals from engineering, power, steel, mining, automotive, auto-ancillaries, chemicals, non-ferrous, white goods and textiles. The students have earlier worked in companies such as BHEL, Tata Cummins, NTPC, Tata Steel, NMDC, Maruti, Tata Motor, Hero Honda, TVS, Kalyani Forge, Reliance, Birla Copper, Hindustan Zinc, NALCO, LG, SAIL etc.

A major component of the programme is an intensive internship in a manufacturing based firm that would help the participants to develop problem solving skills in the area of manufacturing. We are interested in exploring possible opportunities for our participants both for internship during the programme and final placement.

Visionary Leadership in Manufacturing (VLM) programme traces its lineage with Leaders for Manufacturing (LFM) programme which was started in 1988 at MIT Sloan. The mission of LFM Programme was to produce leaders who could make American industries globally competitive. Later buoyed by the stupendous success of LFM, many Universities like Purdue, Warwick & others in Europe also started similar programme. These pioneering initiatives assume historical significance since for the first time, industry and academia came together with the common goal of producing leaders with unmatched flair of management and technology.

In order to give impetus to manufacturing and allied sectors, Government of India brought together industry and academia to conceptualize a unique management program to impart leadership skills & cutting edge technology awareness to senior managers.

History was made when the three citadels of Indian educational system IIM Calcutta, IIT Kanpur and IIT Madras joined hands for the first time to lay the foundation of PGPEX-VLM program. Together the three institutes framed the objective, contents, curriculum, pedagogy and modalities of the program under the able guidance of Prof. Shoji Shiba. Prof. Shiba is a globally renowned faculty of MIT Sloan's LFM program and is a recipient of Deming prize.

However, India's growth story has largely been ascribed to meteoric rise of services while manufacturing with meager 17 % contribution to GDP has just started gaining momentum.

The emergence of developing economies in Asia namely China has ushered in a new era of excellence typifying manufacturing as the real growth engine of economy with more than 35% contribution to GDP.

The course is meant for promising engineers drawn from manufacturing and allied sectors who have the potential for top management positions. It emphasizes development of leadership and management skills together with cutting edge technology proficiency. PGPEX-VLM aims to produce world class manufacturing and operation professionals to enhance the competitiveness of Indian manufacturing industry in global economy.

The first batch of PGPEX-VLM has taken off in August 2007.

PGPEX-VLM strives to transform senior managers, cherry-picked from large and medium size organizations, into an eclectic breed of visionary leaders who could demonstrate the blend of vision, passion, business acumen and entrepreneurial alacrity to expedite Indian industry's forward march towards excellence.

PGPEX-VLM is the only program of its kind in India that leverages the management prowess of IIM Calcutta, technological excellence of IIT's and manufacturing expertise of Japan. Ministry of Human Resource & Development (MHRD), National manufacturing competitiveness council (NMCC), Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and Japan Industrial Cooperation Agency (JICA) are the other stakeholders which played an invaluable role in the genesis of the program and to give it much needed fillip.
