A Hawk’s Life Issue # 5 2017-2018 Summer is Just Around the Corner “Summertime, and the living is easy”….I hope most of you are old enough to remember that song and are humming that great tune. I know that song initiates lots of wonderful thoughts in my head, and the vast majority are really good ones. It is amazing what is possible when we get out of our regular routines, have some extra time, and bask in the long days of sunshine that we get at this time of year. My plans are simple: I will sleep in a bit later. I will do more work around the house, as the “honey-do” list gets a bit neglected during the school year. I will take longer bike rides. I will literally attack the pile of good books that have been accumulating in my office all year. I will fish. I will see my grandkids and my wife’s extended family. I will watch my second son marry a wonderful woman. Pretty good stuff, eh? I can only hope that your summers will offer your children all the same kinds of renewing and relaxing opportunities, and while I know that most adult jobs don’t have the distinct ebb and flow of the school calendar, I hope that you older folks get some wonderful family and down time, too. We always look forward to those varied conversations in the fall which start with, “So what did you do this summer?” I wish you good luck in finding some good tales to tell. I have some simple homework for those of you who are in charge of the children. The first is easy and is a rallying cry that you have heard from me often…READ!!!! Whether you read to your children daily (which is key) or have them stop for 20-30 minutes a day to read on their own, just know that this is essential to having your kids maintain the level of growth and development that they worked so hard to achieve over the past nine months. I also hope that you are able to find some enriching activities for your children that you just cannot manage during the year. I know that some of these are quite pricey, so as with all things SES, I hope you will let me know if there is something that your child really wants to do, but is beyond your ability to afford. We will work with you!! The next couple of weeks are going to be chaotic and wonderful, all leading up to a terrific conclusion to our eleventh year as an intentionally inclusive school. I can’t wait for all of these things to happen, but it would be dishonest indeed to say that I am not really looking forward to the magic of summer!! Have fun, be safe, and, yes, READ! Sincerely, Ramsay Stabler, Head of School

Summer is Just Around the Corner

“Summertime, and the living is easy”….I hope most of you are old enough to remember that song and are humming that great tune.

Chemical Attack in Syria By Erica Hernandez, 8th Grade

Many citizens of Syria choked to death after a brutal chemical attack. The Syrian president Bashar al-Assad and his government were blamed for the attack. Some rescue workers report finding 42 dead citizens in their home. The cause of death seemed to have been from suffocation. Anti-Government activists went as far as releasing footage of people lying lifeless on stairwells and homes. In the videos you can see that many of the people have white foam coming from their nostrils and their mouth. The survivors were rushed to clinics with burning eyes and breathing problems. The United States government says they’re working to figure out whether chemical weapons were used in the situation or not. Our government thinks the Syrian president did this to create a distraction for Trump. We think this because president Donald Trump ordered a military strike on a Syrian airbase after the chemical attack last year. In other words, we think Bashar al-Assad fears what we're capable of. ** This article was meant to go in the April newspaper that was not published due to the Yearbook deadline for the staff.

Book Recommendations By Elijah Currans, 8th Grade

The Hate U Give (Middle School Level)

The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas is a book about a girl, Starr, who witnessed two of her friends being shot. It is an emotional book that shows how her life is affected after the second death of her friend, Khalil.

The author helps the reader understand how she changes and the way that she goes through the grief and trauma.

I loved the book and hope that more people can read it.

Rebel Genius (Lower School Level)

Rebel Genius by Michael Dante DiMartino is about a fictional world where art is outlawed.

It goes through the journey of Giacomo who has a genius. A genius is a bird-like animal that helps him with magic. He has to train in secret and ends up risking his life to save his friends.

It’s a great story full of creativity and magic.

Dragon Ball Super By Alli Baron, 7th Grade

Dragon Ball Z has many episodes and seasons. It also has many story lines that are quite hard to follow. Dragon Ball Super is a show that came from Dragon Ball Z.

Dragon Ball Super has only one season with 131 episodes that are 24 minutes each. The story line changes a lot, but it is not as hard to follow unlike the other shows.

The main story line focuses on Goku’s clone Goku Black. Goku Black completely destroys the future and Goku, Vegeta, and the others have to save to it.

Goku Black is very powerful almost more powerful than Goku. Goku needs to find a way to save the future otherwise that reality is doomed.

Is He the Oldest? By Quinn Pack, 7th Grade

The oldest man in the world just died at the age of 146 but is this true? His name was Mbah Gotho from Indonesia and he was born in 1870.

Surprisingly he was a heavy smoker since a young age. But due to his smoking he was taken to the hospital and was then discharged. Then after he left the doctor he chose to only eat porridge and drank very little.

The reason why this a controversy is because according to Indonesia new births weren’t recorded until the 1900s. But even after this, Indonesia still says that the documents are 100% authentic. According to Central java he indeed was that age after they verified him.

He had been preparing for his death since 1922, and on his gravestone it says “What I want is to die.”

In his life he outlived his 4 wives and 10 children. Then, he died on a Monday with his pre made gravestone.

Scorpions By Adrian McClair, 8th Grade

Scorpions are arachnids (a type of

arthropod) that have a long tail and two pincers like that of a crab.

They live throughout the world hunting a range of bugs and some even hunt small mammals like mice.

The desert scorpions are scorpions with less armored bodies and are usually more deadly even being dangerous to humans. More heavily armored scorpions tend to hurt more but be less deadly.

Some scorpions when put under a purple light glow underneath it. Scorpions have a venomous stinger that will inject those stabbed by it.

The less armored scorpions will usually just stab but, ones with lots of armour will use their pincers to cut and then the stab them with the stinger.

Fiction Story: The Tree of the Storm and Where Things Come True

By Christian Musso, 7th Grade

It was February 12th, 1952 on a cold winter day. I was spending a month in China for summer school because I wanted to learn there for a while. Throughout my experience in China, disappointment settled through me because the weather here was terrible! Putting aside this disappointment, here’s the story.

It was 5:30 PM and I was really cold. I was heading out to go and enjoy some Chinese food at Ching Chi Chows. The food was really good! It was probably the best Chinese food I’ve ever had in my life. I had some dumplings, wontons, and Chinese chicken. So I decided to pack up after that delicious meal, and head to the park. As I got outside, a huge gust of wind knocked me down to the ground. I got up in confusion because I didn’t know that I was that light. I started to realize that soft trickles of snow started to lightly hit my skin, but I didn’t know why it was so soft. Well, it started to get rough after a while, and that’s when I noticed I was in the eye of a blizzard. As the intense snowstorm started to get angry, tree branches started to fall off the trees, while people were struggling to not get hit by them. It started to feel very thick and rough pieces of hail hit my arm, almost like someone was throwing tiny stone pellets at me. All I could think of doing was putting my arms over my head and settling under a tree. Underneath the tree was a girl my age crying. I decided to comfort her as we waited for the storm to calm itself.

Issue # 5 2017-2018

(…cont. from previous page) I told her that I smelled the sweet smell of a dandelion with a hint of rainwater. I asked her what she smelled, she said that she’s been confused and scared for most of her life, I started to get sad too- really sad. The snow reminded me of my grandmother. God bless her soul. Along with that sadness, I started to get scared. What if I get stuck in this blizzard? What if my family worries about me? What if this girl beside me has no family? Then, I started to feel happy with her. I didn’t want to leave her. The girl stared at me for quite a while, and my face turned pink, and I felt warm with the feeling of butterflies. I asked the girl what her name was. “Cherry. And yours?” I told her my name and she smiled.

The storm started to fight, while Cherry and I ran to a safer place. In the distance, things started to disappear, and we could hardly see a thing. Through the process of running, I noticed Cherry wasn’t next to me. I glanced back and saw her lying on the ground. She had fallen from the wind or a branch on the ground. I helped her up and just as we started running, the storm settled down. Next to us we saw a little coffee shop. I had a little bit of money, so I bought her a hot chocolate. Cherry finished her drink, “Thank you, Chris.” I told her it was my pleasure. Cherry looked at me, reached her arm out to me, and we held hands. I knew that she felt the same way. The storm was the reason this happened. It brought joy and love to us. I sat there realizing that anything is possible, and that unexpected circumstances can come true. Cherry and I walked outside, and she gave me a big hug. Butterflies. “Chris, I hope you know that you are the greatest gentlemen I have ever met. Without you, I would still be stranded in the cold, alone. I hope I can see you again.”

“Oh you will, just as long as you remember the tree we met.” I said. She smiled and said her goodbyes.

“Goodbye, Chris.” “Goodbye, Cherry. It was nice meeting you.” She smiled, and walked away.

Lions By Naod Besrat, 7th Grade

One of the fiercest animals to live in the wild is the lion. The lion is the second largest cat in the world after the biggest cat, the Liger.

The adult female lion eats 11 pounds a day, but a male adult lion eats up to 16 pounds a day. The pride members of lions will attract one another roaring and they come together. The size of the pride determines how much food and water there is for everyone in the pride.

The female lions are the hunters in the pride, but since the prey is faster, they try to get prey as a team. The lion is a one of the best animals out there.

Featured Teacher by Josephine Musso, 6th Grade

The teacher I chose is Mr. Wynar because he has shown kindness and he is an amazing teacher.

Some things I like about him is that when he says something like he likes to see people cry he actually cares when you’re crying and he comforts people when they’re sad. He came here because he felt it was one big way to change the world and it was a big part of learning.

He loves to teach here a lot. When he came to Colorado in high school the Colorado Avalanche introduced him to hockey and they are a big part of his life.

Killer Kilauea By Hailey Nielson- Krueger, 6th Grade

Kilauea is a volcano in Hawaii that began first erupted in 1983 and has struck again.

It started erupting just last week and is very dangerous. The lava is flowing into the Pacific Ocean and destroying buildings. People who live on the big island are evacuating because of health hazards such as, lung damage and eye and skin irritation.

Residents are being kept away from the volcano and coast, “There continue to be explosions and earthquakes from the volcano’s summit- some say it’s like a war zone” reports Jackie Young of Hawaii Public Radio.

Hopefully the eruption will come to a halt and residents of Hawaii can return and live their lives like before.
