You probably see many tall trees. You might also see pine cones on the ground or animals scurrying about. There's a lot more to a forest than meets the eye. A forest is actually a food factory! The plants in the forest are very busy making their own food. They do this through a process known as photosynthesis. Photosynthesis is a chemical reaction. It takes place in chlorophyll found in the leaves. Plants absorb water and nutrients from the soil. The leaves of the plants also take in carbon dioxide from the air. Photosynthesis occurs when energy from the sun combines with the carbon dioxide and water. The result is glucose. Glucose is food for the plants. The process makes a waste product as well. The waste is oxygen. The plants must get rid of it. That's good news for people and animals! The plants might not need the oxygen, but we do! The next time you explore a forest, remember that the plants that surround you are not  just a group of growing greenery. They are also a factory of hard workers, busily creating food for themselves and oxygen for you! A Forest Is a Food Factory Questions 1. Why do you think the author calls the forest a "food factory"?
