A Forest Is a Food FactoryBy Erin Horner
When you look at a forest, what do you see? Youprobably see many talltrees. You might also seepine cones on the ground oranimals scurrying about. There's a lot more to aforest than meets the eye. Aforest is actually a foodfactory! The plants in theforest are very busy making
their own food. They dothis through a process known as photosynthesis. Photosynthesis is achemical reaction. It takes place in chlorophyll found in the leaves.Plants absorb water and nutrients from the soil. The leaves of theplants also take in carbon dioxide from the air. Photosynthesis occurswhen energy from the sun combines with the carbon dioxide andwater. The result is glucose. Glucose is food for the plants. Theprocess makes a waste product as well. The waste is oxygen. Theplants must get rid of it. That's good news for people and animals! The plants might not need the oxygen, but we do! The next time youexplore a forest, remember that the plants that surround you are not just a group of growing greenery. They are also a factory of hardworkers, busily creating food for themselves and oxygen for you!
