October 2019 3

A nother month has come and gone! It’s hard to believe that it’s already November. The holidays are just around the corner… and now that’s

actually true, instead of the way Christmas starts creeping into stores when it’s still pool weather. This bothers me of course, and not just because I’m hearing “Jingle Bells” while wearing flip flops. When the stores rush into Christmas, they don’t give Thanksgiving its due. Maybe Thanksgiving doesn’t have the trap-pings, lights and excitement of the end of the year. There isn’t much to buy aside from food. But it’s the only holiday that is specifically centered around what should be a moral imperative: being thankful.

In my very first November issue, I thanked my family, my husband and my children. I’m still so grateful to them, of course. Now, three years later, I want to extend my gratitude even more.

Thank you to the absolutely wonderful doctors, nurses and aides at Hackensack Hospital and John Theurer Cancer Center for taking care of my mom and us this past year and a half.

Thank you to my friends for keeping me sane during that time as well.Thank you to the faculty of Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School, among

whom are the very best co-workers and friends a gal could ever have.

Thank you to the fellow moms of Verona, who stepped in count-less times to help me with story ideas, pick ups and drop offs and all those unexpected half days (seriously, why do I seem to never know about them?)

Thank you to Mike, Marti, and Randy who make working on this magazine so rewarding by being such a diligent and talented team.

And thank you, Verona Neighbors! Have a wonderful holiday and make sure to thank someone today.

P.S. I’m also grateful to live in a country where I am free to voice my opinion and make myself heard. Get out and vote this month!

RESIDENT FEATURE

The Reynolds Family Enjoying the Simple Life Right in Their Backyard

W hen Judi and Hugh Reynolds were looking for a house, they knew they wanted something with a large yard. This snowboarding, biking, beach-going couple loves the outdoors, and wanted a piece

of it for themselves. “I grew up in Jersey City and longed for a yard,” said Judi. As for Hugh, he knew Verona was the perfect place for the outdoor lover. “Within an hour’s drive I can be at the mountain, or at the beach. I can fish in Verona Park. I can hike and ride my bike in the Hilltop; anything I could want is right at our doorstep.”

But when their realtor sent them snapshots of a home in Verona, they almost overlooked it. “We only saw a driveway in the pictures,” remembered Judi. “But our realtor said there must be more property because the numbers don’t match the pictures. When we walked down the driveway and saw the yard, deck, and ‘creek’ (the Peckman River), we were sold.”

Hugh and Judi would have never guessed how much that little creek would mean to their family. After the nature-loving couple had their son, Cole, his grandparents gifted him a fishing pole. “He received a pole just shy of turning two and for some reason

a passion was born,” said Judi. “We would go to Verona Park and he would sit in a little chair and ‘fish.’ There was no hook, but there was this sense of stillness and interest that it is not typical in a toddler. In diapers that summer, he caught his first fish using a real hook and has been enraptured ever since.”

At age three, Cole wanted to try fishing in his own backyard. “He was convinced there must be some fish in there,” Judi said. “We used a piece of pasta we had in our fridge as bait. I nearly fell down in shock when he caught one.” Completely “hooked,” Cole began entering local fishing derbies. He has won every one--whether there is an age category or not. In one derby, he caught a memorable 28 fish.

Now at 6 years old, Cole is an avid angler with his own Instagram account and devoted following, @cole_finds_the_fish. “I love fishing!” Cole said. “I’m good at it and if people haven’t done it before, I think they would love the feeling of catching their first fish. They could follow my Instagram and learn some tips.”

“Our knowledge about this sport has exploded and in many ways it is the focal point of our family,” Hugh said. “Professionals

are wowed with his skill and we continue to be as well. As parents, we support and nurture and leading a fishing life is now part of that.”

Judi agrees. “We fish everyday if we can, always looking for new spots. We could have never guessed how perfect this house with its fish-filled creek would be for our future son. It still astounds me.”

Hugh and Judi are one of your local Jersey Shore romance success stories. “Hugh and I were neighbors in Belmar in the summer of 2000. Our houses were across the street from each other. We were friends all summer and finally knew it could be more the last weekend of the summer.”

One of the things that Judi loved about Hugh was his philosophy: “A bad day on the beach is better than a good day at home.” “I think that attitude clued me in on his positive life perspective and love of the outdoors quickly!” laughed Judi. “We’ve used that saying over and over inserting different locations, i.e., A bad day at the lake… A bad day fishing…”

Judi was a born beach goer, but never had experience with winter sports. “I learned that first winter that if I didn’t learn how to snowboard, our relationship would not have longevity! Hugh

taught me how to snowboard with a trial by fire mentality. Every winter we traveled to different snowy destinations like Utah, Colorado, or British Columbia.”

This love of snowy sports actually changed Hugh’s entire career outlook. After a brief stint at Johnson & Johnson, Hugh joined an internet startup called Awards.com. But after they moved the company to Florida, “I decided I couldn’t live somewhere without snow and resigned.” When Hugh turned 30, he decided to turn his passion for “sliding on the snow” and make it his career.

“I wound up quitting my job and taking a seasonal, hourly-rate position as the winter events manager at Mountain Creek. I gave myself one winter to see if I could make something happen, and at the end of that season I was hired on full-time as the resort’s marketing manager, and eventually Director of Marketing. Two years later I took a risk again, quitting my job with Mountain Creek

to join SNOW Operating, a company focused on changing the way ski areas introduce first-timers to skiing and snowboarding. In four years, we

grew that business from a handful of partners to working with more than 50 resorts in the US, Canada, China and Australia.”

Hugh is overjoyed that his love of winter weather has led him to a job he enjoys. “I love the energy, I love the people, but most importantly, I love the experiences we offer to our guests,” Hugh said. “People work all week just to be able to come and visit us on their weekends or days off. That’s pretty amazing. I know because I used to be one of them.”

Judi also counts herself among the lucky ones who love their job. She has worked at Essex Fells Elementary School for the past 21 years. “It is the most challenging and most rewarding way to spend one’s time! I’ve been invited to former first grade students’ college graduations. You have an opportunity to change

a life, impact a future, brighten someone’s day or year. What could be better?” After teaching elementary grade levels, Judi decided to obtain a second Masters in educational leadership, and her role evolved: “For the last three years, have been lead teacher and coordinator of Intervention and Referral Services and Section 504. While I no longer have my own classroom, I am in the classrooms most days running from preschool one period to fifth grade the next. My colleagues say I look like Mary Poppins in the hallways with my bag of tricks and umbrella. I would love to finish out my career at this school as it is truly a most unique and special second home.”

Of course, nothing beats the Reynolds family’s actual home on Derwent Avenue. From their neighbors Jack and Terry Fleming,

who are now Aunt Terry and Uncle Jack to Cole, to the groups of parents and children who play outside for hours, the street has

extended the Reynold’s definition of “home” and “family.” When Judi was pregnant with Cole, she was surprised with a challenging pregnancy and traumatic labor and delivery. “This block of ours, led by Aunt Terry and Uncle Jack, organized a meal train during my bedrest. The outpouring of genuine care was overwhelming. To have so many neighbors invested in your child--and they still are--is once in a lifetime. Walking up the street and having people ask, ‘Catch anything today?’ ‘Going fishing?’ ‘How’s school, Cole?’...this block is a warm embrace. How could we ever leave that?” ■

Cole loves to fish in Verona Park too.

I absolutely love the flavor of browned butter! I use browned butter in my chocolate chip cookies and

as a frosting for layer cakes and a glaze for cupcakes. The flavor is subtle, but delicious in this pie recipe which I have adapted from “The Four & Twenty Blackbirds Pie Book.” The filling will work with any pre-baked store-bought pie crust, but is always better made from scratch, with love. Here’s the Brown Butter Caramel Pumpkin Pie Filling (pair with your favorite pre-baked all butter pie crust recipe).

Contributed by Carolyn Rodriguez

RECIPE

Brown Butter Caramel Pumpkin Pie 6 tbsp unsalted butter 1 cup light brown sugar 2 tbsp water ½ cup heavy cream 1 tsp vanilla extract 2 large eggs 2 large egg yolks ¾ tsp kosher salt 1 ²/³ cup pumpkin puree 1 tsp cinnamon ½ tsp allspice ½ tsp ground ginger Pinch ground cloves 1 tsp molasses 2 tsp fresh lemon juice ²/³ cup whole milk ¹/³ cup carrot juice

In a heavy bottomed skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Continue to cook. Butter will foam and turn golden. Stir with heat proof spatula, scrap-ing the bottom. When the butter is nut brown, immediately add the brown sugar and whisk. Then carefully add the water. Bring the mixture to a boil and continue simmering until the mixture smells cara-melized and starts to darken slightly. Remove from the heat and slowly add the heavy cream (mixture will bubble rapidly) and whisk until smooth. Allow to cool for at least 10 minutes. Stir in vanilla extract.

While the brown butter caramel is cooling, position a rack in the center of the oven and preheat to 350 degrees. Place pre baked pie shell on a rimmed cookie sheet. In a separate bowl, whisk the eggs and yolks together with the salt. Set aside.

In the bowl of a food processor fitted with the blade attach-ment (or with an immersion blender) blend the pumpkin puree with the spices, molasses, and lemon juice until smooth. With the machine running on low, add the brown butter caramel through the feed tube. Process. Add egg mixture through feed tube. Process. Add milk and carrot juice and process until completely smooth, scraping down sides.

Pour mixture into pre baked shell. Bake in the middle rack of the oven 45 to 55 minutes, rotating half way through. The pie is finished when the edges are set and puffed slightly and the center is no longer liquid but still jiggly, like Jell-O. Allow to cool completely on a wire rack, 2-3 hours. Serve slightly warm, at room temperature or cool. ■

Someone You Should Meet: Claudine Pascal, New Director of the Verona Public Library

■ How do you describe your job?I like to think of my role as the director as the face of the Verona Public Library. Community outreach and collaboration is at the heart of what I do. I steer the direction of the library and make sure my staff has the resources they need to be successful in their respective departments.

■ What do you like most about being a library director?I like having a direct impact on the com-munity, and working with and getting to know the residents.

■ What would you like to see happen here in town to make it even better for the Verona residents? This is a tough question. Verona already has so many wonderful things to offer its residents. The park is great, the schools are great, the town is well maintained. I just learned that electric vehicle charging stations are being installed near town hall. How cool is that? What I’d love to see is more people using the library! I’m going to work on that.

■ What are some big projects or events that you have planned for the Fall? The Board of Trustees and I are going to begin work on our next strategic plan for the library. We want to make sure that we offer the latest and greatest services that meet everyone’s needs. We are going to ask the community for feedback so look out for more information on that. I encourage everyone to get a library card, subscribe to our newsletter and follow us on social media so they will know when that is happening. And of course my door is always open and I encourage residents to contact me with ideas.

■ Are there any challenges you face in your role that you are currently taking on and want readers to know about? One challenge librarians face is battling the idea that libraries are just a repository for books and aren’t necessary anymore. Yes, we offer books and media to the public, but we also offer informa-tive lectures on interesting topics, concerts, computer assistance and research assistance. We are a place where organizations can meet and share what they do with the community. We provide early learning opportunities for small children. Kids have a safe place to spend time with their peers or meet with a tutor. They have an additional resource in our Teen and Children’s Librarians. There are often people who work from home using our space and wifi. We have resources for business owners. I encourage resi-dents to visit us, or at least visit our website, to get a better idea

VERONA NOTABLES

of what a wonderful resource the library is.

■ Tell us about your background...how did you get here?I grew up in Wayne. I’ve always loved music, the theory and complexity that goes into creating a piece. I majored in music at NYU as an undergrad but switched to English when I realized that as much as I love music I didn’t want to pursue it as a career. I’ve always been a bookworm and after attending my first literature class lecture I knew I had to switch. I taught high school English for four years before going to graduate school full time at Rutgers for my MLS. It took a while to figure out my path, but I love what I do now.

■ What do you like most about living and working in Verona?First of all, I love that I can walk to work now! It helps me get my steps in. Also, part of the job of being a library director is to connect with community organizations and actively participate in local events. I’ve met so many more people now that I have school aged children, and my role as director will connect me with others in town that I may

not have had the opportunity to meet otherwise. The people in Verona are so nice and supportive. I love the small town feel.

■ You work hard--what do you do for fun?I really enjoy just going out to eat with friends and spending time with family. I enjoy day trips to NYC or a local farm with the kids. I also enjoy seeing live performances, whether it’s a concert, Broadway show, ballet or opera, it doesn’t matter. There is nothing quite like watching or listening to artists do their thing. My husband is a big sports fan and I enjoy going to see the Red Bulls or Devils play too. And of course nothing beats getting lost in a good book.

■ Tell us something about yourself that we’d be surprised to know.I was painfully shy as a child and am a total introvert.

■ What is a favorite quote or words of wisdom that you try to live by?“Be Claudine.” I learned by reading Gretchen Rubin’s The Happiness Project years ago that the only way to live your life is to accept who you are, no matter who you want to be or traits you wish you had. Basically, “Be Who You Are.” This has proven especially helpful as I worked my way up in my career. It helped me focus on my strengths and build on those rather than wasting energy trying to do something that wouldn’t make me happy. ■

There may be plenty of family traditions that you have enjoyed at Thanksgiving for years: Grandma’s china, Aunt Sadie’s potato recipe, the annual cousins talent show. But have you thought about incorporating new traditions that are your very own? After all, someone has to start traditions, right? Read on for ideas that will make Thanksgiving uniquely yours.

1Create your own serving dish at a “make your own” business.

Go as a family and make a platter with all of your kid’s handprints. Or go with a friend and create a bowl with a favorite inspirational quote. Every time you see it on your holiday table, you will remember making it with loved ones.

2 Come up with a new recipe to serve or bring to Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is a time for traditions, sure, but in the end, everyone loves a delicious dish. Get together

with a friend to swap family favorites and make them together. Or, make a new dish each week leading up to the holiday and have your family vote on which one makes it to the “big show.”

3Create a “thankfulness tablecloth” to use each year. Using fabric pens on a plain white tablecloth, have guests sign their name and date to what they are thankful for. The

fabric pens are washing machine safe, so your guest’s messages will last year after year, even as the guest list changes and grows.

4 Send your cards early. If you send Holiday cards, consider sending “thank you” cards instead of this year. Send the cards to far flung family as a “thank you for being

in our lives” note. Or, send to neighbors and friends as a thank you for all of their help and kindness in the last year.

5 Shake up your guest list. If you’re the one hosting, invite someone new to Thanksgiving this year. Maybe you have a neighbor who always spends the holidays alone.

Maybe your friend’s usual invite isn’t happening for some reason. Maybe there is a nearby college student who needs a home cooked meal and is too far from home to get one. Whatever the case, consider opening your home to someone new. Who knows, they may become a permanent fixture at your future holidays. ■

The Team Zoey Turkey Trot: Walking to Find a Cure for Progeria

O n the Saturday after Thanksgiving, on a day when many people are recovering from a turkey or shopping hangover, hundreds of Verona residents crowd Verona Park for the

annual Team Zoey “Miles of Hope” Turkey Trot. This 5K Race and 1-Mile Fun Run/Walk is a town staple. But what could make Verona residents lace up their running shoes on a chilly November day? The love for one of their own, Zoey Penny.

Zoey, who just celebrated her 10th birthday, has Progeria. Progeria is a “rapid aging” disease in chil-dren, which can cause a heart attack and/or stroke at an average age of 14.4 years. But Zoey remains an active child, who loves school, art, playing with friends, and especially gymnastics.

Zoey has been on a clinical trial drug Lonafarnib which is helping to keep her heart strong. The drug seems to be aiding in afflicted children living longer, healthier

COMMUNITY EVENTS

lives. “She has been taking Lonafarnib since she was 3 years old, thanks to early diagnosis and the existence of a clinical trial that simply would not have been possible without our supporters,” said Laura.

Team Zoey runs many events throughout the year, but one of its most popular is the Turkey Trot, which raises money that goes directly to the Progeria Research Foundation to help find treatments and a cure for Progeria. With only 161 children currently living with the disease, funding can be hard to come by. So support of family, friends, and neighbors is especially important. ■

For more information, check out The Team Zoey website (www.teamzoey.com) which is dedicated to raising money for the Progeria Research Foundation to find a cure and develop treatments for all the kids suffering from this disease, and to sharing updates of Zoey as she lives her life fighting Progeria.
