A Story Of Faith and Forgiveness
Rubel Shelly writes a weekly email article titled The FAX of Life. His message for
this week is a great reminder of the power of faith, hope and love, and in my
judgment, ties well with the new “These Three Remain” series of sermons I’m
beginning this morning.
Louis Silvie Zamperini had a troubled teen life that included minor scrapes with the
law. Then his older brother, Pete, got him to try out for his Torrance High School
track team. Louis would go from there to set a high school record in the mile that
would stand for 20 years, get a track scholarship from USC, and compete in the 1936
Berlin Olympic Games. Upon graduating from USC in 1940, the next major move
for Louie (Louis) was his enlistment in the Army Air Corps. Aa a bombardier on a
B-24, he and his fellow crewmen went into the ocean on May 27, 1943, while flying
a rescue mission. His parents received a note of consolation from President
Roosevelt about his death.
But Louie Zamperini did not die in the plane crash. He and two other men were
bobbing about the Pacific in a life raft. For 47 days, they endured heat, thirst, hunger,
sharks, bad weather, and Japanese strafing. One of the men died about a month into
their ordeal. But Zamperini and co-pilot Russell Phillips somehow survived on
rainwater, fish, and an occasional bird until being captured by the Japanese. His
weight had dropped from 125 pounds to only 75. During his two years in a POW
Camp, Louie was subjected to particularly vicious treatment because of his celebrity
status as an athlete prior to the war. Ironically, it was his physical conditioning as an
athlete that helped him endure the beatings, torture, and psychological abuse. In
some ways, however, the worst was yet to come upon his liberation and repatriation
to the United States.
Louie sank into depression and alcoholism. They nearly destroyed his marriage, and
it appeared that his life would end tragically rather than heroically. For the lack of
any better option, he attended a Billy Graham Crusade in Los Angeles in 1949, heard
the gospel, and began a new life in pursuit of Christ. Louie and Cynthia Zamperini
remained married until her death in 2001. He grew as a Christian, became a
prominent lecture-circuit speaker, and remained an active runner and climber into his
90s. He made a missionary trip to Japan and ran a leg of the Olympic torch relay for
the 1998 Winter Games in Nagano.
Louie forgave his former tormentors. He communicated that forgiveness in person to
several of them in a 1950 visit to a Tokyo prison where they were serving sentences
for war crimes. In the 1990s, he wrote this to a particularly sadistic camp guard: "As
a result of my prisoner of war experience under your unwarranted and unreasonable
punishment, my post-war life became a nightmare...but thanks to a confrontation
with God, I committed my life to Christ. Love replaced the hate I had for you." He
received no reply from his letter to Mutsuhiro "The Bird" Watanabe, who died in
2003.
Louie Zamperini died last week at age 97. Details of his amazing story are told in
Laura Hillenbrand's best-selling book Unbroken. “Hope has to have a reason," said
Louie. "Faith has to have an object."
