WALT (We Are Learning To)Understand and explore Salvador Dali’s surrealist artwork and how to create an artwork inspired by his work.

WILF (What I’m Looking For)A drawing of a mixed animal in their habitat inspired by Salvador Dali’s artwork.

Salvador DalíSalvador Dalí was a Spanish Surrealist artist, best known for the striking and bizarre images in his work. Salvador Dalí made paintings, sculptures and films about the dreams he had. He painted melting clocks and floating eyes, clouds that look like faces and rocks that look like bodies.

Salvador Dalí went to Paris after leaving art school, which was where he met the surrealists. The surrealists appealed to his wild sense of humour, they invented surrealist games and enjoyed putting different objects together to make something playful and disturbing at the same time. Here is Dalí's version of a surrealist sculpture. It is called Lobster Telephone.

Outline of Task1. Select TWO (or more) animals to draw together as one animal.

Have a think about how you might want to connect the bodies together. Which animal you would like to represent the front half of the body and which animal will represent the back half of the body?

Have fun with the drawing. Remember, you are creating your own breed of animal! It doesn’t have to look like the real thing.

2. Once the animal is drawn, draw a tree, bushes, or some type of background. Think about where your animal might live, then think about an OPPOSITE ENVIRONMENT.

If a giraffe lives on the African Savannah, why not create an ocean instead? If your fox lives amongst the wooded trees, why not make your trees look like candles or pencils? Remember, Surrealism is meant to fool the eye thinking that something looks normal until you look closer.

3. Then add colour using your pencils and textas.

REflectionWrite your answers to the reflection questions in either a workbook or in the google doc. Then take a photo of any written work and a photo of your artwork and upload them to your computer. Then go back to the visual arts google classroom and insert the photos to your google doc OR you can email me your work to isabella@chelseaps.vic.edu.au.

*If you are unable to upload the photos onto the google classroom, save them to your computer and write your reflection in a workbook. Keep all of your artwork and reflections together and you can hand that into me at a later date.
