Everyone knew there would be Homecoming Festivities taking place, but no one knew those activities would be the prologue to “Friday Night Fights”. Now, no—there were no fights, but there were plenty of hits, extra touches, little nudges and personal fouls to cause most Oriole fans to get a bit verbal. None the less, the O’s matched up with the Trojans on a cold, damp night in a field that was well lit. Lit that is by the Preston fans who had trouble keeping those pesky headlights turned off. Preston found the scoreboard early and often as they moved the ball wellbefore AND after the whistle. The Orioles scored their lone touchdown late in the second quarter when Zach Scriver hit Elias Nissen down the far sideline in front of the Trojans (and their headlights). Brian Allsup and his billy-club of a thumb kicked the PAT and Springville was on the board, but down 28-7. Martin called for the on-side and Brandon Mysak made the recovery, sending out our offense to look for a quick six before the end of the half. An Oriole turnover however gave Preston the ball and one series later, another six on their scoreboard. Nissen and Caleb Anderson blocked the PAT to force Preston to settle for a 34-7 half time lead. Springville threatened in the second half but fell victim to either a penalty or a turn over, while Preston continued to control the ball and field position the rest of the evening. The final score was 49-7 but the game was not without high-lights. Anderson had a would be touchdown ruled a fumble. The senior had clearly crossed the goal line, when two Trojan defenders sandwiched him, the official ruled it a turn over. Mysak, who finished with 3 catches for 96 yards, had 2 that were “holy cow did you see that?” catches. Both of which were launched strategically by Scriver, who threw for 196 yards in a game where nearly every play ended with him on the ground. I believe his jersey is still soaking in Spray-n-Wash. Anderson had 4 catches for 42 yards, Drake Coonrod was the leading rusher with 8 carries for 41 yards. Nissen who I am sure was the high-light of their scout team, still had his share of touches, but made most of his gains on passes from Scriver, 5 catches to be exact, for 44 yards. Defen- sively, Jake Hulett had 13 tackles and Tyler Stewart 8. “Our guys had a tough challenge with some of their bigger players and some of the play that was allowed” said Coach Martin. He continued with, “ However, I am pleased with a 42 point loss if that is possible because of the effort our guys have put in, and knowing that we are getting closer to playing with some of the top teams in our district. We had guys like Kolton Markley and Sam Scriver come in and fill in for guys that got banged up and do a pretty good job”. And so, with a 1-4 record, the Oriole’s have another road game this week. They will face a 1-4 West Central team who has suffered losses to Tripoli and Preston earlier this fall. “West Central has traditionally been a strong team but are down a little this year. We hope to return to our "smash mouth" style of football and come out on top. This is a BIG game for us as far as looking to make districts so any support from family and friends up at Maynard would be greatly appreciated”. Alright Oriole fans—what better place to be on a Friday night, than an Eastern Iowa football field? This road trip will be a good warm up to the Kee game in Lansing scheduled for October 21—that’s an away game as well. ORIOLES “SURVIVE” THE PRESTON GAME

Coach Martin and the Springville football team probably had no idea what they were getting into before game time Friday. Preston found the scoreboard early and often as they moved the ball well—before AND after the whistle. The Orioles scored their lone touchdown late in the second quarter when

Zach Scriver hit Elias Nissen down the far sideline in front of the Trojans (and their headlights). LADY O’S 3-2 IN TRI-RIVERS PLAY

Springville volleyball action heats up this week as the girls host a 1-4 Central City team on Thursday in what may serve as a warm up to their showdown with Monticello on Tuesday. The Lady O’s beat North Linn on Tuesday of this week after a slow start that saw them drop the first game to a scrappy Lynx team. The girls regrouped however, with a little help from their coaching staff and took care of business, winning the next 3 straight. Senior leadership showed through, Megan Hall had 18 kills, C.J. Fitzgerald had 14 kills, Britt Oxley had 22 assists and Jamie Donaldson had 18 digs. You can catch the girls at home this Thursday and again on Tuesday & Thursday of next week. I offer you one simple tip—come early, the player introductions tend to be quite the spectacle!

North Linn action on Tuesday shows to the left, Desi Ohden and Britt Oxley watch the ball while Sidney Hopkins looks to get out of their way. To the right, C.J. Fitzgerald is at the net, Below left, another point is celebrated and directly below, Jamie Donaldson is all concentration.

CROSS COUNTRY Coach Pershing offered his weekly cross country report, “Arden Betzer's strong finish in the girl's varsity 4K race came up short of a major upset at the Anamosa Invitational cross country meet on Saturday. Trailing unbeaten and top 3A ranked Lauren Benzing by 25 seconds with 800 meters remaining, Betzer made a furious kick in an attempt to catch the leader but ran out of real estate at the finish by just 4 seconds. Both runners broke the previous meet record, Benzing breaking her own record with a time of 15:44”. Thanks Coach.

JV FOOTBALL CONTINUES TO IMPRESS

There should be no doubt as to the level of talent developing within our JV squad. The boys are improving each week and played a great game at Preston on Friday night. Guys like DJ Hotz and Wyatt Dlouhy are getting stronger and more skilled. Trevor Hulett is hitting harder and quicker, Andrew Lorimer has his nose on the ball every defensive series. Cody Blake is impossible to bring down when the ball is in his hands and Jesse Robertson is everywhere on de-fense and is starting to make a name for himself as a receiver. Sam Scriver is learning to manage the pace of the game while Kolton Markley is developing into “Mr. Good Hands” as he’s had some nice grabs each week. Mikkel Jensen is carrying the ball well and Reno Meeks and George Kaufman continue to make the blocks in the right gaps. Your chances to catch their talents are dwindling—they’ll kick off against West Central at 5:30 this week. They’ll be those quick guys in the white jerseys.

CRAZY MASCOT OF THE WEEK There’s some pretty crazy mascots out there, here’s your weekly dose of a U.S. high school with an out of the ordinary nick-name. You could say that this week’s is a double dose. Centralia High School, located in Southern Illinois, calls its male athletes “The Orphans” and its female athletes, “The Annies”. They earned the nickname “Orphans” in the early 1900’s when the boys basketball team made it to the state tournament. Low on funds, they wore

mismatched red uniforms and were announced as looking like a bunch of Orphans. Later, when girls athletics came along, it made sense to follow the theme and call them the Annies. Their teams compete in all the usual sports, wearing the colors red and white. Their football team is 5-0 this season.

YOUTH FOOTBALL Allison Field was the site of 3 youth games last Sunday. You may remember that Springville has 2 teams playing in a tackle league this year, one at the 3rd/4th grade level, pictured below left & another at the 5th/6th grade level, pictured below right. This upcoming Sunday, the 3rd/4th grade team will hit the road but the 5th/6th graders are at home on Sunday for a 1pm game against the Solon/White team. Head out to Allison Field and cheer them on—Let’s go O’s!
