Python-sniffing dogs of Florida successfully track 8-foot-long snake

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission recently began training Truman and another dog

named Eleanor to detect a python’s scent and alert handlers when they’ve come across one.

6 Medical Conditions That Dogs Can Sniff Out

Dogs are famous for their sense of smell. This sense is so advanced in dogs that they can

smell disease or medical conditions. With about 220 million scent receptors — compared

to five to 10 million in humans — dogs can smell things that seem unfathomable to

us.12 Dogs’ ability to detect odors is 10,000 to 100,000 times that of humans. They can

detect some odors in parts per trillion, and they can detect countless subtleties in scents.

There are dogs who have sniffed out medical issues that even doctors weren't aware of.

Dogs can pick up on tiny changes in the human body, from a small shift in our hormones

to the release of volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, released by cancer cells.

Researchers and dog trainers are just beginning to understand how dogs do this and how

we might put them to work in being our helpers in health care. Here are six medical

conditions that dogs are able to smell.

Cancer, narcolepsy, migraines, low blood sugar, seizures, fear and stress.

Shout-Outs!

Fast CAT – Our first Spring Fast CAT trial at Hog Dog was a great success, due in no part to a

great group of volunteers and workers from our club. If I have forgotten anyone please forgive me.

Friday was cold as the dickens with the wind, and everyone came back for Saturday and Sunday.

These folks deserve a great round of applause and a heartfelt thank you from me.

Lee Carr, Linda Davis, Donald Grskovich, Judith Hoffman, Pat Mathews, Richard Mathews,

Lauralee McGuire. Denise McHarg, Penny Miller, Mary Mynaugh, Krista Sheets, Hazel Trondel,

Holly VanHouten, Kelley Welsh.

Bridget Ratcliffe - RATCHX8 Donut! Had an absolutely wonderful time.

Deb Knowles - 2 28 2021 Agility fun and new titles! Maple has been on hiatus from agility

class since early December and I can't even remember the last time Silver did agility, except maybe

occasionally subbing for Maple. So, when I signed them both up for ACT Jumpers 1 and 2, I had

no real idea what to expect from all of us. Eight qualifying runs, with placements.

Deb Knowles with Silver got her CDX-C today at a very covid-safe CDSP trial at Oriole!!!!!!
