In six weeks, the puppy stops whining” ~ Mike Ditka ORIOLE FOOTBALL WINS… AGAIN TV camera’s, sideline reporters, breathless cheerleaders & a full house of Oriole fans were all on hand Friday night to watch the football team take care of the Cedar Valley Christian Huskies. It took just 90 seconds for Springville to find the end zone, their location of choice for most of the evening...with Elias Nissen’s first touch downthe rout, so to speak was on. The Huskies did move the ball & their quick count, short pass routes had our defense on their toes—but the O’s & their size overpowered Cedar Valley & with this win, Coach Martin & the boys find themselves at 3-0. By the 2nd quarter, the starters were either resting on the side lines or picking up reps in secondary positions, while some of the younger guys found that well sought after, Varsity playing time. Tyler McDowell had his coming out party for all of Linn County to see. The speedy sophomore scored 3 touch downs, one on a nifty 45 yard punt return & he also ran in a couple of 2 point conversions. Pele, I mean Brian Allsup, continues to dazzle the state of Iowa with his PAT’s, the Junior phenom was 7 for 7 AND... he nailed a 32 yard field goal. Senior big man, Selby Ballantyne had a fumble recovery early in the game to set up Springville’s second score from the Cedar Valley 15. Freshman Andy Hagensick forced a fumble which was one of two gobbled up by Sophomore Cody Bell. Junior, Sam Scriver had a pick 6 & Senior Drake Coonrod stepped in front of a Huskie pass for a pick 6 of his own. Junior Kolton Markley had a razzle dazzle touch down on a quarter back keeper that showcased his footwork. Markley cut back across field for a 22 yard run that ended with a leap across the goal line. There was one downer on the evening as Sophomore Greg Pauly, in at quarter back, went down with what may be a season ending injury. We hope for better news, but #10 suffered a leg injury, however, not before he threw a 10 yard completion and ran for 13 yards of his own. All in all? It was a great night to be an Oriole fan, as everything was rolling in our favor. Six kids found a score or two in the end zone, & everyone made the stat column. Sophomore Andrew Lorimer had 5 tackles, Senior August Sorenson & Sophomore Ryan Menster had 3 tackles a piece, & Menster had 2 for a loss. Sophomore Trevor Hulett also had 2 tackles, one for a loss & Senior Matteo Capodivento (best name in the league) picked up the kicking duties for Allsup, continuing the tradition with 2 touch backs of his own. Senior Alex Emig had a 4 yard carry & Senior Cody Richards was also in on a few possessions for the O’s, while freshman Matt Carson had an interception while freshmen Carter Gillmore & John Evens found some playing time under the lights too. Coach Martin was “very pleased with how we came out from the get go with our starters both on offense and defense. It was hard for them to be on the sidelines so early in the game, but they did a great job of becoming supporters and extra coaches to the younger guys as the game went on. I was also impressed with our second team offense and defense. The did a great job of continuing the offense of production (Tyler McDowell was player of the game by KCRG 9.2) and getting stops on defense. Third team did a good job of running plays, just need to work on consistency but will get better with more reps”. Martin and the guys have little time to enjoy their quick start. Lansing Kee awaits, they too are 3-0 after wins against Midland, Elkader and Riceville. I asked Coach Martin what he plans to do this week in preparation, “ Our focus this week will be controlling the line of scrimmage. They have a couple of big lineman that play both ways and if we can control them we should have some success” and “we will work more on our passing game. We will have some mismatches with our receivers and need to try and exploit them”. And the keys to winning Friday? “ Ball control, we cannot turn the ball over, and with the long bus ride, we need to come out ready, which we have done the past couple of weeks. We also need to stop their running game, it is very similar to what we run, and they depend on their running game to make their passing game work”. So here we go folks, we approach the what I would say is the “meat and potato’s” part of our season—you boys hungry? No leftovers, let’s get a road win and call it 4-0. ORIOLE FOOTBALL WINS… AGAIN

LADY O’S STILL SEEK THAT FIRST WIN

Springville kids are known to work hard, take the long way and give 110%. It is in that tradition that the Varsity volleyball team has chosen to warm up for conference play with matches against perennial powerhouses like College Community, Solon, Regina and Vinton-Shellsburg. That’s how Coach Eastman and the girls spent last Saturday at the Linn-Mar Invitational. According to Coach Eastman, “We scheduled ourselves a tough pre-conference schedule by design. We as coaches have always felt that our teams get better by playing tough competition. Right now, the overall record doesn't look good, but our kids are doing some very nice things. I think we improved both our serving and attacking efficiency from last week to this week. Our passing and defense has been solid for us. Our kids give great effort as our fans can see by the many hustle plays the kids are making. Once we get our hitters in their groove and those hitters gain some confidence in their ability at the net, I think we will see the match wins come. We continue to be pleased with our kids' attitude and effort both in match play and in practices. They are frustrated because they know they are so close to winning games and matches, but are still working hard to get better”. Tuesday night was the opener for Tri-River’s action and it was a road trip for the ladies up Highway 38 at Maquoketa Valley. The Wildcats jumped out early and handed the Orioles their first conference loss of the 2012 season, beating Springville 25-12, 26-24 and 25-22. And Eastman said, “despite the loss, we showed real improvement tonight. So far this season, our hitters have struggled at the net. Tonight, they put some nice attacks

together. Most importantly, we had more kills than errors tonight. Our hitting efficiency was a decent .218. We averaged 10 kills per game, which has been a goal. We gave ourselves a chance to win tonight at least from the net”. And as for improvement? “We continue to miss too many serves (8 missed tonight). We will continue to work on that. We also had some struggles with our serve receive, which is to Maquoketa Valley's credit. For our team, each match is more experience that we need. We continue to tweak the line up and rotations to see what combinations are going to give us the best chance to win. As long as the kids continue to work hard and compete on each point, we think our best matches are still ahead of us”. The girls will no doubt continue to work hard—come see for yourself, Alburnett hits town on Thursday. Let’s hope the 0-10 Lady O’s can find the win column. Fresh/Soph begin at 5:15, bring your seat cushions and your outside voices—it should be a great night of volleyball.

MIDDLE SCHOOL FOOTBALL OPENS UP AT HOME

The 7th and 8th grade football team hosted Preston on Tuesday in its season opener. The boys played hard and moved the ball well against the visiting Trojans. The Orioles scored first, they forced the first turn over and they dealt their share of big hits in a game that featured power running at tail back, terrific special teams and a stingy defense that gave up just one big play too many. Springville fell 28-12 but showed promise for what should be a great season. The coaching staff of Kyle Koeppen, Mike Moran and Jeff Menster kept fresh legs in the game and they orchestrate an offense that rides the backs of 7th grader Henry Hoogland and 8th graders Seth Blakely and Nick Stuppi. 8th grader Cavanaugh Riley runs the offense under center as the QB. The line features plenty of muscle and 8th grader Braden Oxley leads the 0’s on both sides of the ball, and is complimented nicely by the likes of Andrew Blakely, Nick Hagensick, Blake Jordan, Wesley Campbell and Austin Kirchmann. Dan Kirby, Lucas Pilipovic and Nick Miller saw some reps as well and will earn more time as the season progresses. Nick

Hagensick however had the play of the game— the 7th grader blocked a punt that was recovered by Blakely to give the O’s the ball on the Preston 17 yard line. The boys travel to Midland for a rare Saturday game this weekend with a 9am start time. You can catch them at home next week when Cedar Valley visits Allison Field—4pm, take some personal time and head over for a fresh look at your future O’s.

HOOGLAND IS THE LEADER OF THE PACK

MIDDLE SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL, LOTS OF HITS AND PLENTY TO DIG

After meets in Monticello and Starmont, Lady Oriole Angie Hoogland (pictured right) is setting the pace for her team mates. Ranked 16 in 2A, the Springville senior is the top finisher for her team which has been good enough for 2nd at Monticello last Saturday and 7th at Starmont on Tuesday. According to Coach Pershing, “Angie Hoogland got out fast and ran an excellent race. She stayed controlled and was able to accelerate at the half-way point to move from 10th to 7th. She easily achieved her goal of 16:30, despite the windy conditions”. Freshman Brady Barner has been the top finisher on the boys side as he turned in his personal best at Monticello with a time of 21:05. And on the Middle School side, 8th grader Sam Lorimer (pictured left) set a new team record at Monticello with his time of 13:09, good enough for 2nd place at the meet. Coach Pershing and the crew have time to shave off some seconds before their next meet at Center Point on Tuesday. (Photo’s courtesy of Rich Lorimer)

7th and 8th grade volleyball is all about the cheering—every point deserves a celebration and these girls have had plenty to celebrate. Lady Oriole Volleyball has a strong tradition and it starts with the younger girls—see for yourself, Coach’s Katy Wyman and Christina Zaruba will have the girls fired up and will be home on Tuesday playing host to Ed-Co. Start time is 4pm. (Photo courtesy of Angie Gloeckner)

ORIOLE FOOTBALL HISTORY LESSON

Our great start this season has had us putting on our thinking caps and brushing off the record books. Below, please enjoy what the Springville journalists wrote as it celebrated a team that rattled off 8 consecutive wins… These are the words as they were written in the ‘75 issue of the Springville Oriole Yearbook—Enjoy.

The mighty 1975 football Orioles broke more records this year than ever, Led by the rather motley and ragged, some times disorganized coaching crew of Harold Allison, Rollie Koch, Ken McNutt, Larry Juhl, and Jon Davis, the players kept their sanity long enough to set a record for consecutive wins, 8 in a row, which of course could not have been accomplished without the 10 fearless seniors who laid their lives on the line every Friday night, just to pull together the sophomore-junior nuts and bolts and build a well oiled, finely tuned winning machine. Not to be left out is the superior medical attention provided by senior managers, Dennis Zaruba and Mark Koch. Just the icing on the championship cake.

WEEKLY PICKS: Make your picks—who will win this week in 8-Man football?

Valley of Elgin at Midland Preston at Central of Elkader Don Bosco at Tripoli Springville at Lansing Kee Here’s what you do, choose your winners AND for the tie-breaker—pick the point TOTAL in the Springville/Kee game. Send your picks and name to [email protected] with “Weekly Picks” as your subject, and catch next weeks issue to see who won bragging rights. Congratulations to Springville’s Ralph Oxley and Cavanaugh Riley for winning last weeks contest.

CAN YOU NAME THIS “O”? Pictured to the right is one of the Springville faculty members. Can you decide just who it is? Would you like a hint? Her initials are those of a state abbreviation, AND they appear as an element on the periodic table.

CRAZY SCHOOL OF THE WEEK There’s some pretty crazy mascots out there, but this week, here’s a dose of a U.S. high school with an out of the ordinary nick name. West Plains, Missouri is home of the West Plains Zizzers. The Zizzers field teams in all traditional sports and feature colors of Red and Black. Just what is a Zizzer you ask? Not sure, but the name supposedly originates from a 1907 West Plains faculty member who referred to a comical student story that was published in the yearbook as a “zizzer” and the name stuck. Let’s see, 1907—that beats 1960, which is when The ABC Book by Dr. Seuss came out—and that featured, you ready for this? “Z for Zizzer”!

THE FAMOUS AMONG US—OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT... Now call me silly, but there are some people who walk among us, and they turn a head or two. And heads turn because they remind us of someone from time to time. This week let’s take a look at Springville Mom and Volleyball Guru Tiel Howard. Doesn’t she look just like TV personality Ricci Lake? I mean which of these lovely ladies is the real Tiel Howard? You be the judge!

DID YOU KNOW?

The Coach’s vs Cancer festivities last Friday raised $1200. Between Cedar Valley and Springville activities and a $200 donation from KCRG, the night was a tremendous success. Thanks for your support and continued efforts in such a worthy cause.

SPRINGVILLE TRAVEL TEAM SAYS THANK YOU…Community members made
