EXCITING NEWS

HIWAY THEATERATT H E

Digital Cinema Installation. We are happy to announce that the Hiway installed a new Digital Cinema projector and equipment during the last week of May. We have successfully converted from film to Digital Cinema. The Hiway community saved the theater by supporting this change with gifts totalling over $75,000. Thank you for making this happen. Thank you for your support when we needed it most – when the future of the Hiway Theater depended on it.

Digital Cinema presents a beautifully bright and clear image. It is a step into the future (and its installation was necessary for the Hiway to stay open). We hope you like it as much as we do.

We are happy to announce that Renew Theaters is now managing the nonprofit Hiway Theater. Renew is a nonprofit management company that also operates the Ambler and County Theaters. The Hiway will continue to be governed by its current local board of directors and will still operate as its own separate nonprofit theater (just like the Ambler and County Theaters).

Jonathan Wilt, President of the non-profit Hiway Theater, has said,“We see this in terms of sustainability. Renew’s strong team brings twenty years of expertise in art house movie theater management. The success of our Screen Saver campaign reflects the strong desire to have a permanent movie theater in the borough. Our move to have Renew manage the Hiway ensures that the community’s support will be sustained into the future.”

As Hiway members know, the Screen Saver Campaign has raised thousands of dollars to purchase a Digital Cinema projector. Hundreds of people have contributed to save the Hiway Theater. With the addition of Renew’s managment, the Hiway will be solidly anchored.

Helping with Digital Cinema. Renew contributed a $10,000 gift to the Screen Saver campaign. Then, Renew’s first official act was to oversee the installation of the Digital Cinema equipment. Renew purchased and installed the equipment best suited to the Hiway’s needs, drawing on its experience in converting both the Ambler and County Theaters to Digital Cinema. (Renew has also enabled the Hiway to add a new ticketing system and new management computers, which will greatly help the Hiway’s operations.)

Main Films (and Special Programming). The Hiway will continue to show great films. Films like The King’s Speech and Silver Linings Playbook will continue to be the Hiway’s bread and butter. In addition, Renew will bring more special programming to the Hiway. This will include classic Hollywood films, opera and theatre performances, filmmaker appearances, and kids/family Saturday matinees. These new offerings will add to the Hiway’s current programming in an exciting new way.

The Hiway welcomes a new

management team.

Digital Cinemais here!

What Renew will contribute.

Exciting news at the Hiway Theater.

Hiway members will now receive reciprocal benefits with the Ambler and County Theaters. You now will be able to see films and programs on those additional screens at a reduced price! One of the challenges of a single screen theater is that one popular film - like The King’s Speech - can tie up the theater for weeks (which is required by the film’s distributors). Now a Hiway member will have many additional options at the Ambler and County.

Since 2007, the theater has shown great films in a splendid setting. (The 2006 restoration is glorious and the new neon tower, added in 2011, is a crowning achievement.) The theater has operated in a prudent and effective manner by an excellent local board of directors.

Renew’s experienced team has successfully run the Ambler and County Theaters for many years. We have advised independent art houses across the country and are recognized as a leader in art house restoration and operations. Renew will help to ensure that the Hiway is financially sustainable for years to come.

Your support guarantees the success of this valued cultural asset. Together, we will work with local groups and citizens to continue to make the Hiway responsive to the people of Jenkintown and surrounding communities. Thank you for helping us to make this transition and to make the Hiway the best theater possible.

Renew Theaters, Inc. is a nonprofit, 501c3 tax-exempt, management company. Renew was created to allow the same management team to operate multiple theaters, while allowing each theater to maintain its own separate, local identity. Renew makes no profit – it is a “pass through” company that supplies the services at cost.

Renew currently operates two other movie theaters – the County Theater in Doylestown (since 1993) and the Ambler Theater in Ambler (since 2003). We also helped reopen the Bryn Mawr Film Institute in 2005 and ran its movie operations until 2009. Each of our theaters is a separate, 501c3 tax-exempt corporation. Each theater has its own local Board of Directors and its own separate finances. In addtion, Renew’s executive director, John Toner, has been on the Hiway’s board of directors for over five years, so he is intimately familiar with the theater.

The Hiway Theater is a non-profit community-owned theater. Thank you for all of your support of this valued cultural asset. Your support is the foundation of the Hiway’s future.

Sustaining the Hiway’s success.

The Way, Way Back USA – Nat Faxon and Jim Rash 1 hr 43 minTHE WAY, WAY BACK is the funny and poignant coming-of-age story of a 14-year-old boy and his summer vacation. Having a rough time fitting in, he finds an unexpected mentor in the wild manager of “Water Wizz” park. Directed by the co-writers of The Descendants, this endearing film has the feel of a Little Miss Sunshine type movie. With Steve Carrell, Toni Collette, Allison Janney, Sam Rockwell, and Liam James.

Main AttractionsWhat main films will play at the Hiway? Predicting in advance what films will play at our beloved one-screen Hiway is the biggest challenge that we face. It is very hard to know ahead of time. The films listed here are an educated guess. Our website is always the best place to get up to the minute information.Scheduling our main films is week-to-week. On Monday, we decide what main film will play starting that Friday. On Tuesday and Wednesday, we set the showtimes for the upcoming week and then update our website and telephone hotline. We also send out a weekly email (sign up at our website). Sometimes, we book a main film a few weeks in advance, which we post on our website. For our latest Main Attractions plans, visit: HiwayTheater.net. (Or call our Hotline at 267-864-0065)

The EastUSA - Zal Batmanglij - 1 hr 56 min THE EAST is a suspenseful and provocative espionage thriller. Brit Marling stars as an operative in a private intelligence firm who is selected to infiltrate “The East”, an anarchist group that targets corporations for their “environmental crimes.” But as she proceeds, she begins to question where her true loyalties lie. This film delivers a consistently tense, morally alert story with plenty of cinematic appeal. Featuring Brit Marling, Alexander Skarsgard, Ellen Page, Julia Ormond, and Patricia Clarkson.

Unfinished Song UK - Paul Andrew Williams – 1 hr 33 min A wonderfully heart-warming story of a loving marriage between grumpy old pensioner Arthur (Terence Stamp) and the ever-cheerful Marion (Vanessa Redgrave). Arthur does not participate in his wife’s singing with an unconventional local choir. But when heartbreak strikes, he is forced to re-think his outlook on life. With steady perseverance from the group, he slowly begins to come out of his shell and reconnect with the world.
