About the eventAsian Maritime Law Conference 2016, the 8th edition in the series will be held from 29 – 30 september 2016 in singapore. Bringing together thought leadership to the next level addressing the key areas of industry concerns such as challenges due to economic downturn, latest innovations on dispute resolution, recent international regulations adopted by singapore and much more. the 2016 event is set to deliver again another lively mix of presentations, panel forum and round-table discussion with ample opportunities for audience participations, these topics will examined in considerable depth.

About the organizerthe Maritime Law Association of singapore (MLAs) aims to promote the study and advancement of maritime law and its administration in singapore, and to promote and consider with other associations proposals for unification of maritime law and practice of different nations.

the MLAs is the national member of the Comite Maritime international (CMi) and represents singapore at CMi conferences and colloquia. it organises regular talks throughout the year featuring speakers of local and international reputation and hosts the Asian Maritime Law Conference series, which has now become a signature event. Any person above 21 years of age who is interested in the objects of the MLAs (including non-lawyers in the shipping industry) are eligible for membership in the MLAs.

9.00am Welcome Remarks by: President of the Maritime Law Association of singapore (MLAs), Mr. s. Mohan

9.05am Keynote Speech by the President of the Comite Maritime International (CMI) Mr. Stuart Hetherington. the keynote address will focus on the role of the CMi in the drafting of international Conventions since its formation in

1897, its continuing role in drafting instruments to bring greater uniformity to maritime law, its role with the international Chamber of Shipping and the IMO in encouraging greater ratification of maritime conventions with particular emphasis on South East Asia and some of the significant conventions which could usefully be adapted by more nations in South east Asia.

9.30am Asian Maritime Forum Hear the leaders of various maritime law associations in the region discuss the challenges facing the shipping

community as well as their members. the Panel will be chaired by the President of the MLAs and the President of CMi. the panel will comprise Presidents of Asian MLAs or their representatives.

The Panel will discuss recent economic and legal issues, e.g. China’s one-belt-one-road (land and sea silk road) policy and maritime issues, South Korea’s intention to set up a specialist maritime court, Indonesia’s new maritime policies (reversal of cabotage, new maritime routes joining the islands), etc.

The Panel will also explore whether there are any areas in which there can or should be unification of maritime law.
