“Wow, Camille! Look at that!” screamed Jana. “Good grief, Jana, what happened?” “Oh, my

goodness! You’re not going to believe this, but my pickled frog just moved inside the jar.” “Oh,

sure, and my frog has wings,” laughed Camille. “Hey, I’m telling the truth. Look for yourself if you

don’t believe me.” “Okay, but this better not be a trick. You know how much I like surprises,”

warned Camille. “No way, this is the real thing. I’ll take the lid off the jar so you can get a closer

look.” “Yikes!” screamed Camille as the frog jumped out of the jar, into her lap and onto the floor.

“Ugh! Just moving was bad enough; jumping is too freaky,” shuddered Jana. “Where’d it go? OH

no, we’d better go find it!” warned Camille.

• 6.NS.C.6 a,c: Recognize opposite signs of numbers as indicating locations on opposite sides of 0 on the number line; recognize that the opposite of the opposite of a number is the number itself and that 0 is its own opposite. Find and position integers and other rational numbers on a horizontal or vertical number line diagram; find and position pairs of integers and other rational numbers on a coordinate plane.

• 6.NS.C.7 a: Interpret statements of inequality as statements about the relative position of two numbers on a number line.

SCIENCE - Week 2 Lesson 1: Matter and Phases of Matter Learning Objective: Students will be able to describe, and provide examples of, the three main phases of matter by reading the passage below and identifying examples of the phases of matter in their own homes. Students will demonstrate mastery by completing this lesson with at least 70% of questions correctly answered.

Science Standard:

• U1.1: Analyze and interpret data to show that changes in states of matter are caused by different rates of movement of atoms in solids, liquids, and gases (Kinetic Theory).

________________________________________________________________________________ Matter and Phases of Matter Activity

1. Solid 2. Gas 3. Gas 4. Solid 5. Liquid, Gas 6. Gas 7. Solid, Liquid 8. Gas 9. Liquid 10. Gas 11. Solid 12. Gas 13. Gas 14. Liquid 15. Solid (Until it completely melts.)

SCIENCE - Week 2 Lesson 2: Different Forms of Water Learning Objective: Students will be able to synthesize knowledge of different forms of water by reading and watching a video (if possible) about water forms. Students will demonstrate a mastery of their understanding by correctly answering questions about the passage and achieving a 70% or higher on the quiz.

Science Standard: • U1.2: Plan and carry out an investigation to demonstrate that variations in temperature

and/or pressure affect changes in state of matter.

1. C 2. A

3. D

4. B 5. B 6. D 7. A

8. Students may name any use described in the passage, such as pier construction. 9. Students may name any use described in the passage, such as sterilizing farm fields. 10. Answers may vary, as long as they are supported by the passage. Students may cite

the passage’s statement that we “use water to nourish everything from ourselves to our

pets to our yards.” Students may also point out specific uses that water serves in its

various forms, such as sterilizing farm fields and enabling transportation.

SOCIAL STUDIES - Week 2 Lesson 1: Ancient History

29

Learning Objective: Students will know they are successful by showing the flow of different cultural ideas through answering questions and creating flow charts

Social Studies Standard:

• 6.G3.1: Students will be able to analyze how cultural characteristics affect the movement of people, languages, ideas and more.

________________________________________________________________________________

What is Culture?

• Answers will vary. Students will get points when they explain their answers. o Examples: Culture is a pattern of behavior from a group of people/society. o Culture allows us to learn about different ideas, modes of thinking, and explains why

things are different from our society. o We are able compare different cultures to our own and create meaningful discussions.

Vocab:

• Students will create a picture/symbol. There is no wrong answer if students can provide a

meaningful explanation as to why they decided to draw it.

o Examples: ▪ Civilization: I would draw a picture of a city with people walking around. A King

may be waving to the people.

• Explanation: I chose to draw this because I wanted to show that a

civilization has 8 key features. I drew two of the eight. A city and the fact

that there is a social hierarchy (I.e.- a king). o This is an example- students answers will vary! That is okay! It is all about making sure

that students are creating meaningful explanations for the definitions so they

understand the meaning of the word!

SOCIAL STUDIES - Week 2 Lesson 2: Geographic Themes Learning Objective: Students will be able to describe geographic themes by analyzing and summarizing text.

Social Studies Standard:

• 6.G1.1: Use and construct maps, graphs, and other representations to explain relationships between locations of places and regions. ▪ Key concepts include major landforms and water bodies, countries, cities, ecosystems, climate, languages, religion, economic systems, governmental systems, population patterns, disease, trade routes, and settlement patterns.
