In The Sandwich Artist, Chef Pierre is training new chef Lucinda on his ways. He introduces her to the sandwich ruler, which will help to make "ze perfect" sandwich. Lucinda recognizes that the ruler is a number line running from -10 to 10 with zero exactly in the middle. The ability to recognize the signs of opposite numbers both conceptually and visually on a number line encourages students to use rational thinking and enhances their knowledge of number sense. Lucinda recognizes that the ruler is a number line running from -10 to 10 with zero exactly in the middle. Chef Pierre explains that the rule to create "ze perfect" sandwich is to place the toppings at opposite locations along the sandwich ruler. Chef Pierre starts a sandwich which Lucinda must finish. Gladys: Provide students with many opportunities to explore the idea of opposites with fractions and decimals, in addition to whole numbers.

Kevin: During this standard, emphasize that putting a negative sign in front of a number changes the direction of the number (from positive to negative or from negative to positive).

Megan: Using the language "the opposite of" will help move students toward understanding that a variable does not always represent a positive number. For example, -p = 3 tells us that "the opposite of p is 3." So p = -3.

THE SANDWICH ARTISTWhere should she place the rest of the sandwich toppings?New chef Lucinda is working on her own for the fi rst time and is determined to make Chef Pierre proud by creating ze perfect sandwich. According to Chef Pierre, ze perfect sandwich is one on which ze toppings are exactly symmetrical.

Lucinda has started the sandwich below and now must complete it. Pickles are at -5 and -2. Olives are at -4, -3, 0, and 4. Tomatoes are at 0 and 4.

Use the sandwich ruler to help Lucinda place the rest of the toppings correctly.

APPLYING THE STANDARD

Graph and label the following points on the number line:a = -1, b = -a, c = 1.5, d = -c, e = 0, f = -e

The boat launch is located at 0, and the swimming area is 4 units away, as pictured on the number line below.• The picnic area is located 10 units away from the swimming area, in the direction of the boat launch. Label the picnic area as point P below.• The distance between the diner and the boat launch is the same as the distance between the picnic area and the boat launch, but in the opposite direction. Label the diner as point D on the number line.
