RESPONSE

One, Rev. Dr. Anna V. Copeland: May God who brings life out of death and hope from despair, give us life today.

All: Amen

READING FROM THE HEBREW SCRIPTURE Rev. Elizabeth B. Johnson

One: Let us open our hearts to the word of God.

All: Teach us, guide us, lead us, mold us.

Leviticus 19: 1-2, 9-14

The LORD spoke to Moses, saying: Speak to all the congregation of the people of Israel and say to them: You shall be holy, for I the LORD your God am holy. When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not reap to the very edges of your field, or gather the gleanings of your harvest. You shall not strip your vineyard bare, or gather the fallen grapes of your vineyard; you shall leave them for the poor and the alien: I am the LORD your God.

You shall not steal; you shall not deal falsely; and you shall not lie to one another. And you shall not swear falsely by my name, profaning the name of your God: I am the LORD. You shall not defraud your neighbor; you shall not steal; and you shall not keep for yourself the wages of a laborer until morning. You shall not revile the deaf or put a stumbling-block before the blind; you shall fear your God: I am the LORD.

RESPONSE

One: May these holy words guide and direct us.

All: For God is the Lord of our life.

*HYMN OF DEVOTION "As a Fire is Meant for Burning" BEACH SPRING

READING FROM THE GOSPEL Rev. David W. Johnson

One: The scripture is an open door, welcome.

All: We hear God's invitation and come in.

Matthew 5:38-48

"You have heard that it was said, 'An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.' But I say to you, Do not resist an evildoer. But if anyone strikes you on the right cheek, turn the other also; and if anyone wants to sue you and take your coat, give your cloak as well; and if anyone forces you to go one mile, go also the second mile. Give to everyone who begs from you, and do not refuse anyone who wants to borrow from you."

Rev. Elizabeth B. Johnson

"You have heard that it was said, 'You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be children of your Father in heaven; for God makes the sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the righteous and on the unrighteous. For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax-collectors do the same? And if you greet only your brothers and sisters, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect."

RESPONSE

One: May these scriptures inspire us to respond,

All: To the fierce mercy and boundless love of God.

SERMON "Beyond Sweet Revenge" Rev. Dr. Anna V. Copeland

"The other cheek...The extra mile...Love your enemies."

ANTHEM "If Ye Love Me" The Community Quartet

Thomas Tallis

If ye love me, keep my commandments,

and I will pray the father, and he shall give you another comforter,

that he may 'bide with you forever, e'en the spirit of truth.

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING

INVITATION TO OFFERING Richard Gray

God calls us to be a welcoming church and we live out that welcome in so many ways. One of them is the offering that sustains ongoing programs and meets the urgent needs of our community. Our cups are full with living water, and God calls us to give a cup of cold water to every child of God.

UNISON OFFERTORY PRAYER

Gracious God, we thank you for blessing these Sunday morning gifts as you have blessed us for ministry in this place and for mission among all your children. We celebrate our place in the generations of generosity through Christ Jesus our Savior. Amen

OFFERTORY "Love" The Community Quartet

Gerald Near

Gracious Spirit, Holy Ghost, taught by thee, we covet most,

of thy gifts at this our time, holy, heavenly love.

Love is kind, and suffers long, love is meek and thinks no wrong,

love than death itself more strong; therefore, give us love, holy, heav'nly love.

Prophecy will fade away, melting in the light of day;

love will ever with us stay; therefore, give us love.

Faith and hope and love we see, joining hand in hand agree,

but the greatest of the three, and the best, is love.

CALL TO PRAYER Rev. Dr. Anna V. Copeland

One: God be with you.

All: And with your spirit.

One: Be open to God, and God will hear your prayer.

All: We open to God, and God changes our lives.

CHORAL CALL TO PRAYER "O Lord, My Lord" The Community Quartet

John Carter

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father which art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name.

Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread,

And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors,

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil,

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen
