Fortinet rolls out next-gen firewalls

Fortinet hast unveiled two new next-generation firewall platforms – the FortiGate-300D and FortiGate-500D at Gitex Technology Week 2014. presents the opportunity to add new security functions yet consolidate security devices – a ‘win win’ scenario for customers across the region.”

These new FortiGate platforms, along with the FortiGate 200D-POE and 240D-POE, are now available in the Middle East from authorized Fortinet channel partners.

These new models are ideal for the region’s midsize enterprises, branch offices, as well as state and local government, education, healthcare and other market segments that need strong security and easy-to-manage functionality at affordable price points.

“Traditional firewalls have not kept pace with the changing threat landscape, forcing organizations to

Etisalat has announced the expansion of its managed security services portfolio, offering a firewall/Unified Threat Management (UTM) service, which includes firewall, antivirus and antispam services, content filtering and VPN capabilities.

The announcement was made on the sidelines of the ongoing GITEX Technology Week 2014 in Dubai.

The new service will provide enterprises both ‘on premise’ and ‘in cloud’ options offering end-to-end management, monitoring and maintenance services to help businesses better protect their infrastructure against continually evolving threats.

Abdulla Hashim, Senior Vice President of Digital Services at Etisalat, commented, “The new service will condense multiple security services into one device. Consequently, business customers will be able to filter content, block spam and host VPNs without deploying multiple boxes at their facilities.”

“The fully managed service makes enforcement of customer’s security policy an inherent part of the network across intranet, extranet, and Internet-based communications. Etisalat combines the expertise of its security experts and uses the scale and reliability of its security operations centers to deliver technologies and solutions tailored to the needs of businesses of all sizes,” added Hashim.

As well as for other managed services, Etisalat will offer its Managed Firewall/UTM service in three tiers – Standard, Premium and Next Generation, with flexible device options from multiple technology vendors.

We are growing at a very rapid rate.”The Regional Director attributes

this growth two main aspects, “Firstly it’s the people and coupled with that is the best technology we use.”

The company has recently announced the launch of Veeam Version 8 and Veeam Version 8 Availability Suite, which features end point free version and cloud connect. “Through end point free version, IT experts have the ability to backup his desktops, other desktops, and also other endpoint products. Cloud connect gives our channel the opportunity to simply deploy it, which is a huge opportunity and helps them scale up,” says Petersen.

The company is reaching out to its partners at the event and urges them to bring end customers to meet with the vendor as they have the resources and expertise to conduct product demos.

Symantec unveils DDoS attack research

Etisalat expands managed security services portfolio

The number of Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks are increasing with the majority of incidents lasting less than 24 hours, indicating cyber criminals are more sophisticated and using a more intense, targeted approach, according to new global research from security experts at Symantec. The research highlights were released early, exclusively for GITEX Technology Week, one of the largest ICT events in the Middle East. The findings indicate that the UAE and KSA appeared in the global top 50 ranking of countries that have witnessed the highest volume of ‘originating DDoS traffic’, listed at 45 and 28, respectively, with less than 1 percent of global attacks during the eight months of analysed data. India topped the ranking with 26 percent of all DDoS traffic deriving from the country, while the USA claimed the second spot.

The study entitled, “The Continued Rise of DDoS Attacks,” was conducted by Symantec’s Security Response team of engineers and analysts who evaluated global data between the period of January to August 2014 based on the Symantec Global Intelligence Network, which is made up of more than 41.5 million attack sensors and records thousands of events per second in over 157 countries and territories.

DDoS attacks, whilst not a new attack vector, have proven to be effective and sometimes devastating for organizations. The attacks attempt to make an online service unavailable by overwhelming it with traffic from multiple sources. A Domain Name Server (DNS) amplification attack is a popular form of DDoS, which floods a publically available target system with DNS response traffic. Symantec’s research indicates that DNS amplification attacks have increased by 183 percent from January to August 2014.
