Greetings! With June upon us, it is hard to believe we are essentially 1/2 way through 2013. Things continue to move onwards with my role as the Electoral Area Director for Area B. The learning curve with this “job” is quite steep and I can honestly say that with the knowledge I have gleened, I am becoming much more effective. Now with 2 budget pro- cesses under my belt, I becoming better at navigating the system. Many residents don’t know how large  Area B is. Electoral Area B is a p- proximately 1415 km2 and is located directly to the west and north of the City of Quesnel. The population of the area is 4,006 persons (2011 Can- ada census) with the main communi- ties being Bouchie Lake, Milburn Lake, Ten Mile Lake, Moose Heights, Cinema, lower Cottonwood, and Strathnaver. GRANT WRITER WORKSHOP — QUESNELThe North Cariboo Community Futures, the Northern Interior Communities Association (NICA) and Cariboo Regional District(CRD) will co-host three 2013 grant writing workshops for community groups, organizations and charities from the Cariboo Chil-cotin. The workshops will be in Quesnel (June 15th), Williams Lake (August 10th) and 100 Mile House (August 11th). Infor-

mation on the workshop scheduled for Quesnel is as follows:

The workshops will focus on how to write successful applications for the BC Community Gaming Grants program (http://www.gaming.gov.bc.ca/grants/ ). There are two upcoming sector intakes including Public Safety and Environment from July 1 toAug. 31, and the Human and Social Services envelope which will be open from Aug. 1 through Nov. 30. Both of these intakes will be discussed during the sessions. The sessions will also provide valuable grant writing basics which can be applied to all funding program applications. Community groups and organizations planning to attend are encouraged to bring along applications in pro-

gress, or previously completed submissions to receive feedback on how to improve their grant writing techniques. 

When registering, participants need to indicate if they wish to have a 30 minute one-on-one session. Time slots are available on a

first-come-first-serve basis. The workshop and the one-on-one sessions are free and light refreshments will be available.

INVASIVE PLANTSThe Cariboo Regional Districtoperates an invasive plant

management program to pro-tect the range and timber

lands for the economic andenvironmental benefit of all

British Columbians.

The following activities areundertaken by the Cariboo

Regional District within itsmandate: 

Coordinating and cooper-

ating with other organiza-tions, both public and pri-

vate, to ensure that effectiveand acceptable invasive plant

control measures are carried

out;  Conducting on-the-

ground treatments of inva-

sive plants chemically, bio-logically, mechanically, or

culturally;  Providing information and

advice to property owners;  Loaning spray equipment

to the public to encourageinvasive plant control on pri-

vate land;  Dispensing demonstration

amounts of herbicide to pri-vate landowners, other agen-

cies , and corporate stake-holders;  Providing one-time treat-

ments of invasive plants on

private land;  Undertaking public educa-

tion initiatives aimed at rais-ing awareness about invasiveplants and the problem they

create;  Enforcing the CRD's Inva-

sive Plant Management Regu-lation Bylaw No. 4514; and, Maintaining a GIS-based

mapping system relative to

areas infested with invasiveplants.

At the June 7, 2013 meeting of the Cariboo Regional District , the Board of Directors approved the request toapply for up to $5000.00 to offer workshops in the communities of Bouchie Lake and Parkland which are fo-cused on building healthy communities. These funds will be access through the BC Healthy CommunitiesCapacity Building Fund (http://bchealthycommunities.ca/localgovernmentfunding ) which provides smallgrants (up to maximum $5000 / community) to support local governments to engage in the development of 

healthy community partnerships and to build their capacity for healthy community leadership and action.  

The workshops will focus on identifying issues and concerns within a specific community and /or area. Thiscould include a “needs assessment” and /or developing a community snapshot. A report will be developed

 based upon what services we have and what barriers exist to residents wishing to access needed services. 

These workshops will be hosted by the Parkland Community Association and Bouchie Lake Community As-sociation / Bouchie Lake Parent Advisory Council in partnership with the CRD. All eligible activities must

 be completed by March 31, 2014.

TOWN HALL MEETING — AREA B 

September 25th, Wednesday The Town Hall Meeting for Area B is scheduled to be held on Wednesday, September 25th inBouchie Lake. Traditionally, these meetings have been held in January / February so residentsto comment on the draft budget, but by holding the meetings in the fall, residents will havethe opportunity to be involved at the beginning of the budget process. This process is veryimportant. If you have specific issues and / or points you would like discussed and /or ad-dressed, please submit them to me. If you’re unsure how the CRD budget affects you, check your 2013 Property Tax Noticewhich is due payable on July 2, 2013. The CRD services which you pay into are listed on this

notice.

The community of Bouchie Lake is excited to announce the launch of the NEW website…www.bouchielakerec.ca Residents throughout Area B, and beyond, are encouraged to check outthe site and find out about recreation in the Bouchie—Milburn Lake area. The website is full of infor-mation on what facilities are available and how to access them, how the facilities are funded, how tobecome an affiliate member, and what events are upcoming. The website includes an online calendar which highlights when the facilities are available.  All bookings of the facilities must go throughthe Facility Booking Agent who can be contacted at 250.249.5508 / [email protected] GRANTS 

The BLRC may have funding available to support projects that benefit Bouchie Lake / Milburn Lakearea residents. Funded projects must provide a service to the community and could include, but notbe limited to, to community / special events and capital projects. Grants awarded by the BLRC arefunded from revenue received by the BLRC through facility rentals and fundraising initiatives. Moreinformation on how to access these funds and /or to complete an application is available online at

BOUCHIE—MILBURN COMMUNITY PARK (“Pioneer Park”)  A committee has been established focused on the future development of “Bouchie—Milburn Commu-nity Park”. This park is essentially the gateway to the communities of Bouchie and Milburn Lake.Plans for the park include the removal of invasive plants, the addition of indigenous plants and per-haps some memorial , The Bouchie Lake Elementary School will be participating in a weed pullthrough the CRD on June 19th. Volunteers are needed to assist in pulling weeds & planning this park.

 

UPSTAIRS RENOVATION—BOUCHIE LAKE HALL 

The BLRC is in the process of having a plan developed for the renovation of the upstairs of theBouchie Lake Hall. Currently, the room is more or less empty and is used for meetings, painting clas-ses, and children’s dance. The plans for the room include reducing the BLRC office and renovatingthe room so it becomes a multi-purpose / media / meeting room. If you are interested in putting forthyour ideas for this room & /or joining the committee, please contact the BLRC at 250.249.5508 /[email protected]  

VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION GARDEN 

The BLRC will be developing the gardens at the front of the Hall so they become an asset whichacknowledges the contribution of volunteers and o be enjoyed by all. Plans for the garden cannot beimplemented until the buried heating oil tank is removed from the site. The CRD is assisting theBLRC with this. The BLRC is hoping to have this completed within the next few months.

CLAYMINE TRAILS 

The Claymine Trail Committee will be installing Interpretive TrailSignage and a kiosk this month. Plans are also underway to devel-op approximately 600 metres of wheelchair accessible trails atClaymine.
