a. General:

(l) Generally the First Harine Divieion area lies in what is referred to as the coastal low-lands, This terrain belt is apProximately twenty-five (25) !!'Iiles in depth from the Sed coast inland and extends up the ~:est Coast of KOREA as far as the YALU River, The terrain in this area is characterized by

steep hills that rise abrubtl,y out of lew cuJ,.tivated areas which are largely deVeloped into rice paddies, The hills themselves h>.ve been cut by erosion :tnto 11 hog-back" ridges and minor ridges and hills extetiling like 1~ngers into the lo1-1 areas. The hills arc largely covered with brush of varying degrees of density and scrub pine averaging .from two to four feet_ in height. Durir.g the ~unmer 1 spring e.nd tall; this growth prov"ides good corca.::.lment for porscr .. '1el but generally is inadeqUate as cover or comea.lment for vehicles or shelters :.arger than a pup-tent. During the late fall and winter mon~hS, the· cor.cea.li;J.e.YJ.t afforded tr.r the b!"1.!Bh decreases at least seventy-fjse per cent (75%).

The rice paddies form natural obstacles to the movanents of tanks and other vehicles. In fact, these paddies canalize the movement of vehieles to

the road net in the area. The appearance of the large areas offlat, abandoned,

dry rice paddies is mislea.dine: whe.."l considered as suitable mahusver area !or

tanks, The ~addies have been constructed throughout the years to retain water,

Although appearing solid, there is usually a wet &gze under tho dry crust. In

some ~reas, tanks may negotiate this dry peddy area by movir.g rapidly and not

tracing the path of a previous tank. Tanks may negotiate solidly frozen pad

dies in the winter time, Flooded paddies are not negotiable at any time -,xcept

when solidly frOzen,

The roads in the area are effected by the same conditions as the paddies.

:Wads that are built up above the level of the paddies and properly drained

:"lave, whe11 based 1:iJ rock and prepared by the engineers, become good all-weather

roads. However, When a combination thaw a.nd rain sets in, all ro~ds rapidly

deteriorate and large sections become impassable. The average narrow-road

croaaing t.he paddy areas is a fair-weather road constructed to handle bullock

carts and once traveled by a few vehicles during a heavy rain, becomes a aetHir"'

ingly bo'otomless quagnU.re into wl:ich tons of rocks and gravel will disappear as

fast as ch.llllped and d:tiven over.

There are three (3) main avenues of approach into the division area from

the North. The SAHICHON-lliver Valley which leads into tho division right

flank, the CHAN-DANG Gorrid.or which bends a.round Hill 229 to:.·rards the town of

CHAN-DANG and the ji.AESONG-MUNSAN-NI Corridor which is the s!lilrtest route between

the r.eutral zone and S.Eu\JL, J\11 of these avenues of approach lead to the IHJIN

River uhich co:nstitutes the rta.jor obstacle to a potfl..ntial attack by an enenrr

moving fl"om the North towards the First ~Iarine Division area, . ..1.l of these

corridors were used during the CCF offer.sive in 1951 and still can be considere<j

as the w..ost logical routes of advan:: 6 to the IMJIN River in &1Y possible future

offensive. See J\ppendiXl, (5th Phase Offensive).

The UlJIN !liver is generally not considered fordable, although low water

and the presence of shifting sand bars and shallows does create placea that

would enable the enemy to t>l<ldo or swim across and infiltrate our defensive

area. See Appendix 2, (Study of n;JIN River).

If the bridges were 6~strr>yed or denied to forces north of the river, such

fore es in an large number would have to h9.ve river crossing equipment available

in order- to move to the south barlk. Gert.;Ain terrain features constitute defin

ite obstacles to river crossings and are covered in the detailed terrain analy

s~.'l for each defensive sector. During certain '.oJ'inter months, large areas of thr

r~:.; er fr.:Jeze solidly f'U.Jl~gr1 to s:1pport the crossing of vehicles.

b. Hight Sector:

(1) This sector is fronted by the river line from CT 145034 to CS 087-

"67, The principal rivers and streams in this sector aro the Il'wiN River ani

t'1e NULLO-RI-CIDN. Tho ]}'iJIN River forming the principal terrain obstacles in

tf'.d.s sector averages approxinat;ely ttio .hur.IClred (2CO) metors in width at normal

11ater level and is not considered fordable at CT 117059 and CS 092993 where a

This la-oter area, although lying outside of this sector, has be<in one of the

major r:.vcr C!:'ossing sites in KOREA and as the corridors from this site load

into tbv div:L':ion' s richt ilB-!1_\.t; it. .. i~- oT major ·concern to the division d.efcnse

plans,' The SJIJ'l.I..CH'ON Piver Area, the SANGOORANGI'O Area and the SPOONBILL

either side of Hill 376. Approaches to all corridors lie across

be considered non-trafficable for all vehicles,

The weather is ~ost adverse to nilitary operations during the

sunner rl\iny season, which usually be~ins in the latter part of

June and lasts until late in August, This rain will raise the

level of the HAN ~nd increase the speed of the speed of the out

~oin~ tide, The lowlands in this sector are for the nost part

rice-cultivated and present for~idable barriers when artificially

flooded, and they are highly susceptible to seasonal floods. Ex

tansivAly irri~ated areas. connected b•r nunerous canals, ditches,

and dikes are obstacles to nove!.1ent. Artificial obstacles in the

forti of a fE"'W nin<~ fields, tactical ·..rire, and fortifications are

found along the river bank. Road trafficability deteriorat~s dur

inP, July and August, with inpassi1l.blo fords, bridge Wl\ehouts, and

slides existing in nany places. However, road conditions ir.prove

rapidl;r during SeptoJ·bcr. Durin~: the winter, surface soils freeze

to a depth of six to twelve inches, which rcnoves n~ny of these

obstacles to cros5-country and road trafficability. See Appendix

3A (Road Net). However, even durin~ the nost severe winters, th~

HAN estuary rarely, if ever, freezes eonpletely because of th~

ewift currents and salinity· of the water. During the r:vtxir:ur.

of the river or on sand bars; howeverJ it will not be of suffic
