PARISH STEWARDSHIP
Today's readings speak of hospitality. Abraham, who cheerfully did for his guests all that desert hospitality required, was rewarded with his heart's desire - a son. Martha also busied herself with all the details of hospitality, but grudgingly and with complaint. Am I a cheerful or a grudging giver?

Readings for The Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
First Reading: Genesis 18:1-10 Chapters 12 to 25 of Genesis contain narratives about Abraham and Sarah, our father and mother in faith. Today the couple is visited by mysterious messengers from od. With customary Middle-Eastern hospitality, Abraham and Sarah lavishly welcome and feed the visitors who, in turn, promise something wonderful. Second Reading: Colossians 1:24-28 The letter to the Colossians was written around 80 A.D. to Christians who lived at Colossae, a city in what s today Turkey. A major emphasis of this letter is that Christ is the source of every grace and blessing that come to human beings.
Father Rick’s Reflections . . . Are you a Martha or a Mary? We are so familiar with the story from Luke that we label ourselves a Martha if we are good at or ever prefer working in the kitchen or Mary if we don’t worry about such things.
This passage has been used to support many various understandings of ministry, household chores, the role of women, etc. However, it is good to step back and listen carefully to the reading. The last verse causes many to perk up or question their priorities. Is it really the better part to sit and visit, leaving others to do the serving? What if the Marthas of the world stopped working in the kitchen, leaving the Marys and even Jesus himself without a meal? At its worst, some use this passage to reinforce traditional domestic roles of women and men – with women doing the serving and men doing the reclining, visiting, and eating. I’ve even heard this reading used to claim that religious life (priesthood/sisterhood) is better than the lay state. What is significant in this reading is that Jesus is interacting with two women. One, Mary, is seated at his feet, listening to his instruction as a disciple, though she is not call that here. The other, Martha, is “burdened with much serving” in attempting to prepare a meal for Jesus. Jesus tells Martha in effect that the proper service for a disciple in this situation is to listen to Jesus. It is not to fret about serving meals. Luke will make this point again in the Acts of the Apostles when the apostles are too busy serving at table to be attentive to God’s word and to prayer. To free themselves up for prayer and reading the word, the apostles appoint seven to serve at the table as “deacons.” The deacons then do just that. They see to the needs of the Hebrew-speaking and Greek-speaking Christians so that the apostles can devote themselves entirely to their ministry. This reading is all about the proper role of the disciple – attentiveness to Jesus and his word.
WELCOME BISHOP ROBERT GRUSS! This week, we have the installation of our new bishop, Bishop Robert Gruss. First, there will be Solemn Evening Prayer to celebrate the Rite of Reception of our new bishop, Bishop Robert Gruss at 7:00 pm on Thursday, July 25 at the Cathedral. All are welcome to attend. On Friday, July 26, there will be the Eucharistic Liturgy on Installation of Bishop Gruss at 2:00 pm at Holy Spirit Church in Shields. Entry to this event is by ticket only. The good thing is that it is going to be streamed on the Diocesan website. Let us keep our diocese and our new bishop in our prayers as we prepare for our new bishop. This week, I have two days of meetings in Mundelein, IL for the Vicars for Clergy Conference on Monday and Tuesday. Tuesday morning will be a work-communion service. The rest of the week will be involved with the installation of our new bishop. Pray for our diocese during this transition that we are attentive to the working of the Spirit in our midst. God’s blessings for a great week!
