Finding Covers.O As I am studying the indie/art house

genre, it is difficult to find a magazine

cover with a film on it as most films arenot well known.

O I have discovered to do (500) Days ofSummer as it is more well known and ahuge success, which really boosted thetwo main actors profiles.

As the magazine is quite popularand mainly a slightly indie fashionmagazine. the title is very bright

and large, showing the importanceof the magazine.A paradigm would be the choice offont used in Zooey Deschanel is ina very feminine font, which is quitea contrast with the font of the title.The choice of font represents thesyntagmatic meaning. As it is in

black, it is the darkest colour out ofthe limited colour scheme of theoverall cover, making it quiteimportant and showing how it couldportray her in the film as being veryfeminine and charming. The wayshe has been portrayed by thisgives off a combination of theselected paradigmatic meaningwhich creates the message of herbeing charming and charismatic,encouraging the reader to read herinterview and to therefore buy themagazine.

The cover is very typicallyin the style of Nylon. The

very bright colours, but stillkept very simple so that allthe focus is on the personon the front. The paradigmsof the choice of colours, theclean cut yet alternative

fashion image present theparadigm of portraying themessage that the magazineis clean cut, successfuldepending on who is on thecover, and by name

dropping many othercelebrities and fashionbrands it gives themagazine a feel ofprofessionalism.

O A paradigm could have beenthe background of themagazine cover and how towhat colours to use on thecover. The main focus of thecover is her, she is sitting onher own against a whitebackground, and the whitecould represent the innocenceof her character. This is

unusual as throughout the filmshe is slightly portrayed as notbeing very innocent. But theway she is shown as beingvery charming could show herrelationship with the othermain character. The whitebackground and the bright

colours, so the overall choicesfrom the previous paradigmscomplete the syntagmaticmessage wants to get across.

Mention of the film.O There is no actual mention of the film itself

on the cover, only Zooey Deschanel,

which I think mirrors how she is portrayedin the film with Toms life revolving aroundher. The cover was made right after thefilm started becoming immensely popularso it does link to the film within the actual

article itself.
