It includes Urrbrae House and a number of associated heritage listed buildings or buildings with heritage value. These can be classified as follows: The buildings associated with Urrbrae House (and the Urrbrae House Historic Precinct): Urrbrae House Battery House Peter Waite Garage Coach House Southern Barns Gatehouse/Lodge Caretakers Cottage The buildings associated with the creation of the Waite Campus: Waite Building Hannaford Building The original residence on the eastern section of the campus site: Claremont House Claremont House is isolated from the other listed buildings which all sit west of Waite Road. These buildings have either State or local heritage significance. Proposals for Campus Development A Waite Campus Development Strategy has been prepared (July 2004) which identifies the heritage qualities of the Campus (both the built form and landscape qualities) as part of the physical analysis. Part of the process in establishing a campus design framework (Section 3.2) was to draw a 'heritage line' which runs along the edge of the western un-built section of the site and also incorporates Urrbrae House. This heritage line does not take into account the significant heritage structures of the Coach House, Garage, Southern Barns, Battery House, Hannaford Building, Waite Building and the Caretakers Cottage. If the object of the line is to 'preserve heritage settings' the location of this heritage line should be reconsidered in the light of the heritage values of these places and their context. The objectives and principles established in the report (Section 3.6 Heritage) for the listed buildings on the campus are well considered and should inform any practical implementation of the recommendations of the Development Strategy. This does mean much more detail in terms of the implications of development of the heritage listed places will be required.

5.0 WAITE CAMPUS 5.1 Description of Campus The Waite Campus was established on the land donated to the University by Peter Waite in the early 1920s. It includes Urrbrae House and a number of associated heritage listed buildings or buildings with heritage value. These can be classified as follows: The buildings associated with Urrbrae House (and the Urrbrae House Historic Precinct):

• Urrbrae House

• Battery House

• Peter Waite Garage

• Coach House

• Southern Barns

• Gatehouse/Lodge

• Caretakers Cottage The buildings associated with the creation of the Waite Campus:

• Waite Building

• Hannaford Building The original residence on the eastern section of the campus site:

• Claremont House Claremont House is isolated from the other listed buildings which all sit west of Waite Road.

5.5.3 University Obligations

Stakeholders: Mitcham Council and Campus Services, who maintain the building.

Bequests and conditions: Included in conditions of Peter Waite bequest

5.5.4 Future Management Strategies

Guidelines for retention of heritage value: The exterior of this building requires significant maintenance to maintain the integrity of the brickwork which is an essential part of its physical character. Any early scientific material or equipment which is retained in the interior of the building should also be carefully conserved.

Additional documentation required: Priorities recommended in the 2006 Structural Assessment & Recommendations Report should be undertaken as soon as possible.

Approvals process and requirements: The house is included in the Mitcham Local Heritage Schedule. Once the Mitcham Heritage PAR is confirmed heritage conservation provisions will apply to any work on the Hannaford Building.

Location: Waite Road (Building No. 1), Urrbrae

Date of Construction: 1927-1928

Description: This is a building which was designed by Walter Hervey Bagot, architect to the University. A later 1960s front section has been added fronting Waite Road, sitting in the rear courtyard of the Waite Building. The Waite Building's front elevation faces west.

Heritage Status: State Heritage Register

Summary Statement of Heritage Value: The main building at the Waite Institute is historically important as a physical development of Peter Waite's vision for an Agricultural Research Institute. It is significant architecturally as the work of Woods, Bagot, Jory and Laybourne-Smith (specifically Walter Hervey Bagot) and is one of the few South Australian buildings in the Georgian Revival style. It is enhanced by the stately avenue of Elms in the grand vista landscape manner (Mitcham Heritage Survey, 1995).

Stakeholders: The building is maintained by Campus Services.

Bequests and legal requirement: The Waite Building was constructed as part of the Peter Waite bequest.

5.6.4 Future Management Strategies Guidelines for retention of heritage value: Any work to the Waite Building should be in the nature of conservation and the retention of the significant built form of the structure. The later section to the east does not form part of the original building. The overall form of this building including the major front elevation and two projecting wings should be retained. Internally little of significance, apart from the major interior staircase is significant. However, a full assessment of the laboratory fixtures and fittings should be undertaken to determine if there is anything of heritage value.

Additional documentation required: Priorities recommended in the 2006 Conservation Management Plan should be undertaken as soon as possible.

Approvals process and requirements: Approval for development for a State Heritage place requires that all works be subject to approval from the State Heritage Branch.

Heritage Advisory Services required: Initial assessment of proposed works can be obtained from the Heritage Adviser for Mitcham. This building is a State Heritage place within the Mitcham Council area, and the Mitcham Council has the services of a Heritage Adviser, with delegated authority from the State Heritage Branch. Adaptation parameters: Internal spaces can be adapted as required, as most of the areas would be determined to be of secondary significance apart from identified elements in the Conservation Plan.

Stakeholders: The Buildings in the Urrbrae House Historic Precinct are maintained by Campus Services and occupied by the Curator of Urrbrae House, the Curator of the Arboretum, their staff and volunteers.

Bequests and conditions: The Peter Waite Garage forms part of the Peter Waite bequest.

5.10.4 Future Management Strategies

Guidelines for retention of heritage value: The building has been conserved according to the requirements of the 2000 Conservation Plan which included the application of Burra Charter standards. The building should continue to be maintained in good condition, in order to continue to form an important part of the historic precinct.

Additional documentation required: Nil

Approvals process and requirements: Approval for development for a State Heritage place requires that all works be subject to approval from the State Heritage Branch. Heritage Advisory Services required: Initial assessment of proposed works can be obtained from the Heritage Adviser for Mitcham. This building is a State Heritage place within the Mitcham Council area, and the Mitcham Council has the services of a Heritage Adviser, with delegated authority from the State Heritage Branch. Adaptation parameters: Since the garage is an open space which has had information panels inserted into it, if it were no longer required as a visitor's centre, it could be adapted to other uses appropriate to the space.
