What’s the point of your fancy-shmancy

Closed Thesis Statement?

DEFEND, CHALLENGE, or QUALIFY

1.26.15YOUR MISSION: You will write Closed Thesis Statements that defend, challenge, and qualify an author’s statement.

DEFEND / SUPPORT

• You are supporting what the author is saying.

• Find a minimum of 3 specific reasons that “prove” your defense

EXAMPLE: DEFEND/SUPPORTPROMPT: Should America adopt coffee as a national beverage?

Excerpt from the innerwebs: There really can't be any adult in this great big world that has never tried coffee. It's consumed everywhere, and judging by the amount of Starbucks locations in the United States alone, (in 2012, there were 10,924!) we love our caffeine. And that's fine. In fact, there are many advantages to being one of the 54 percent of Americans over 18 who drink coffee everyday. Many studies show that coffee can be pretty amazing for your brain, your skin and your body. Read on to discover 11 reasons you should wake up and smell the coffee...

•CTS: Coffee should be adopted as a national beverage due to its benefits to your brain, your skin, and your body.

#1 #1 YOUR TURN: YOUR TURN: Read the following passage and write a CTS that defends the author.PROMPT: Does adversity strengthen a person’s resolve? When we alleviate all our discomfort, looking always for the easy way, we fail to grow in important ways. Tough situations carve out a deep well in our psyche, to be filled later with growth and reassurance. We call this “depth of experience”, and without it we are shallow hot-house flowers that wilt at the first sign of heat.

When I visited Bhutan a few years ago, I was impressed by the hardiness of the people. What would take us Western trekkers three days to walk, the Bhutanese traveled in a day. Living in a rugged, high-alpine environment with only trails and yaks to carry their burdens, the children could still break out with heart-melting smiles at the prospect of a game of soccer. Hardship seemed to strengthen their joy, not diminish it.This is even more important for kids, who thrive under challenge. As parents, it’s tempting to smooth over the rough edges of our kids’ lives. And while safety is always crucial, parents can do too much to save their kids from failure and hardship. –Kim Kircher.

CTS: Though safety is important, hardships will develop hardiness, resolve, and joy of life.

CHALLENGE / ARGUE

• After reading the essay, determine the reason(s) why you don’t agree with the author

• Find specific citations that you are challenging

• Consider providing a better argument in the essay

EXAMPLE: CHALLENGE/ARGUEPROMPT: Should America adopt coffee as a national beverage?

Excerpt from the innerwebs: There really can't be any adult in this great big world that has never tried coffee. It's consumed everywhere, and judging by the amount of Starbucks locations in the United States alone, (in 2012, there were 10,924!) we love our caffeine. And that's fine. Many studies show that coffee can be pretty amazing for your brain, your skin and your body. Read on to discover 11 reasons you should wake up and smell the coffee...

•CTS: Coffee does not need to be declared as a national beverage due to its worldwide popularity, the growing trend of coffee shops, and conflicting data on its health effects..

#2 #2 YOUR TURN: YOUR TURN: Read the following passage and write a CTS that challenges the author.

PROMPT: Does adversity strengthen a person’s resolve? When we alleviate all our discomfort, looking always for the easy way, we fail to grow in important ways. Tough situations carve out a deep well in our psyche, to be filled later with growth and reassurance. We call this “depth of experience”, and without it we are shallow hot-house flowers that wilt at the first sign of heat.

And while safety is always crucial, parents can do too much to save their kids from failure and hardship. –Kim Kircher.

CTS: Too much adversity in life can severely weaken a person due to increased stress, lack of health care, and higher rates of injury.

QUALIFY / VALIDATEDefend

•Validate the author’s points that make sense to you

•Find evidence

•Explain why it is reasonable to support these statements

Challenge

•Argue the points that you don’t seem logical to you

•Find evidence

•Provide an explanation proving your position

EXAMPLE: QUALIFY/VALIDATE
