A Gasket Seal has always been the weakest link in your system and we wish to help you strengthen that weakest link. It’s always been a consumable in your Equipment and always the first to bring a shutdown. Gaskets cannot be reused and the regular procurement of these spares was always an annoying cost in your budget. In this analysis, we break down 5 Simple Ways Maintenance and Procurement Heads can reduce their expenses on procuring Gasket. These simple changes can easily be implemented and save the Company Lakhs in Maintenance Budgets. Mistake #1 Buying a Gasket Sheet with Metal Wire Insert. Did you know Compressed Asbestos Fiber (CAF) Sheets work extremely poor with a Metallic Wire Insert and are not recommended across any standard? Not only are they expensive, but they do not pass any Standard or Certification due to their poor sealing capabilities. Read our analysis of Indian Standard IS2712 CAF Gasket Standard. We are not saying Metal is not required, but Metallic Wire def is not needed. Metallic Reinforcement (if required) in form of Tang Metal, Foil Sheets, Expanded Metal Mesh are more suitable than Wire Reinforced. Contact us with your application detail so we can help you out. Majority of all nonAsbestos Gasket Sheets are in nonMetallic form. Mistake #2 Buying Gasket Sheets in Kilograms If your item codes was made in the 1900s, your procurement unit is in Kilograms and no one has bothered about them since. Note, your consumption of that Sheet is in Surface Area and not in Kilograms. In fact you dont even care about the weight of the Gasket, only the Size of it. This is applicable to Rubber, EPDM, Silicon, Asbestos and nonAsbestos. Since your cost centre is greatly incorrect, the cost to your company is also invisible. Gasket Sheets should be procured in Sq Mtrs or Sheets. Case Study : An Indian Refinery used to procure 7000Kgs of 3mm Thk CAF Metallic Sheets in Kilograms. This would result in approx 440 Sheets delivered @ approx INR 440/- per KG costing them INR 31.5L annually. When they changed their requirement to SQ MTRS, they still needed only 440 Sheets and the nonAsbestos alternatives offered by PGE India only cost them INR 22.8L. Not only did they save INR 8.7L per Year but they also improved their Occupational Health Safety Standards by moving away from Cancerous Asbestos Fiber (CAF) Gasket Sheets. Mistake #3 Buying Gasket Sheets in Rectangle Shape. This is another loophope in your system that sometimes can be exploited by spurious Manufacturers. Gaskets especially Flange Gaskets are traditionally circular in shape. The least amount of Scrap that can be generated when cutting a circle from a Sheet is a Square. Cutting a Circle from a rectangle shape means more scrap and waste at your end. NonAsbestos Gasket Jointing Sheet- Must be packed flat, delivered flat and stored Flat else they retain the Roll shape adding a curved stress to the eventual Gasket.

5 Simple Ways to save on Sealing Expenses The inconspicuous Gasket Seal has never got the recognition by Process Equipment Manufacturers and Operation/ Maintenance Heads. Remember, the Width of the Sheet decides the maximum Outer Diameter possible. Rectangle Sheets just add more wastage and scrap for you to dispose. nonAsbestos Gasket Sheets are best procured in Square Shape to ensure minimal wastage. Mistake #4 Buying 3mm and 5mm Gasket Sheets. Gasket performance Parameters, Testing is conducted on 1.5mm to 2mm Thk Gaskets since they offer the best performance in terms of sealing and resistance. Infact, every standard including the decades old Indian Standard IS2712 on Cancerous Asbestos Fiber (CAF) recommends 1.5mm for testing. If you reduce the Thickness, the Surface Area in contact with the Medium also reduces. This allows fewer instances of Failure and longer performance. Also, lower Thickness Sheets are cheaper (not in Kilograms!) than Higher Thickness ones. nonAsbestos Gasket Sheets are preferred in 2mm thk instead of 3mm & def not recommended in 5mm. Contact us for help in identifying the correct thickness for your equipment. Mistake #5 Preferring Compressed Asbestos Fiber (CAF) Sheets instead of nonAsbestos Asbestos is a known carcinogenic and banned because it causes mesothelioma (Cancer of the Lung described as being constantly hammered on your chest). There have been plenty of Research Articles around the world on harmful effect of CAF Gaskets and ideally should be entirely avoided. From a technical point of view, there has been minimal Research and Development in Asbestos Sheets since the 1899s and none once it was banned. Hence, while the rest of the world has moved to nonAsbestos with R&D and performance upgrades, you might still be using this century old technology that incidentally is also the weakest link in your equipment. Certified nonAsbestos Materials offer 5X times longer life than Asbestos and have extremely long lifecycles allowing for longer production cycles, lesser maintenance and better efficiency of the Plant. Regular research and development into any technology will result in a

better product that handle multiple functions, more features and which might look nothing like the earlier iterations.

Doesn’t mean it doesn’t do its job! Disclaimer: PILOT Gaskets has partnered with DONIT Tesnit, Slovenia: Europe’s

largest Manufacturer of nonAsbestos Gasket Sheets.

Better Compressibility when Gasket Thickness is reduced.
