    One Lawgiver and JudgeInitial Words

Our attitude toward law affects howwe relate to others because lawsgovern how we relate to each other.

Those whose attitude is unbendingmay also have difficulty in their inter-

personal relationships. Our view ofthe law depends on the degree ofrespect we have for the wisdom of

    the lawgivers and their lawsfairness.

One Lawgiver and Judge1. Judging One Another

James 4:11, 12 NKJVDonot speak evil of one another....He who speaks evil...and judges his

brother, speaks evil of the law andjudges the law. But if you judge the

law, you are not a doer of the law buta judge. There is one Lawgiver, who is

able to save and to destroy.

Who are you to judge another?

    1. Judging One AnotherJudgment or Discernment?

By placing ourselves on thejudgment seat, we ignore our ownweaknesses (see Matt. 7:13) and

focus instead on anothers wrong-doing, as if we were somehow

outside of or above the law.Such a focus also fails to love ourneighbor as ourselves (Lev. 19:18).

Thus, we are not keeping the law.

    1. Judging One AnotherJudgment or Discernment?

While we should not be judging others,we must have spiritual discernment. We are to compare what people teach

and preach with the Gods Word.We should encourage church

members to settle their differencesamong themselves rather than in

courts, where the judges may or may

not be guided by Gods Word.

    1. Judging One AnotherThe Lawgiver is Judge

Only someone who knows the lawvery well is qualified to judge

whether or not it has been broken.

As the One who gave these laws,Jesus was and is uniquely qualified

to explain what they mean and toassess whether or not they have

    been transgressed.

    1. Judging One AnotherThe Lawgiver is Judge

So when He comes again, His rewardis with Him to give to all according to

    their works (Rev. 22:12).

Furthermore, by taking on humannature, living a sinless life, dying in

our place, and being raisedvictorious over sin and death, Jesus

is able to save us from sin.

One Lawgiver and Judge2. Judging Independently

James 4:13, 14 NKJVCome, you who say, Today or

tomorrow we will go to such and

such a city, spend a year there, buyand sell, and make a profit; whereas

you do not know what will happentomorrow. For what is you life?

It is even a vapor that appears for a

little time an then vanishes away.

It may seem very reasonable to plana year in advance or even more.

On the other hand, we also believe

that Jesus is coming soon and that, someday, all of our earthly

possessions will be consumed byflames (see 2 Pet. 3:1012).

These two approaches to life are not

    necessarily in conflict.

    2. Judging IndependentlyPlanning Ahead

Plan as if Christ were not coming foryears but live each day as if Christwere coming tomorrow.

Many would consider that the richman who decided to build bigger

barns was prosperous because Godwas blessing him. But his overarchingconcern was to lay up treasure for

    himself.

    2. Judging IndependentlyLife is a Mist

Life is uncertain. James 4:14 uses avery rare Greek word (atmis),translated as vaporor mist.It

    emphasizes the transitory nature oflife.

Theres always the imminence ofdeath. We are all just a heartbeat

    away from it.

Plus, not only is life so short but, in and

One Lawgiver and Judge3. Judging Dependently

James 4:15-17 NKJVInstead you ought to say, If the

Lord wills, we shall live and do this

or that. But now you boast in yourarrogance. All such boasting is evil.

Therefore, to him who knows to dogood and does not do it, to him it

    is sin.

    3. Judging DependentlyDeo Volente

Rather than making our plans toodefinite, Instead you ought to say,

If the Lord wills, we shall live and do

    this or that(James 4:15, NKJV).

    This means more than simply

appending d.v.(Deo volente, Latinfor God willing) to the end of asentence about our future plans.

It means we should submit all ourplans to God. God, I want to knowYour will. If You are not pleased with

these plans, please show me.Then, if our plans are not good, God

will show us thatas long as weremain attentive and willing tocorrect our plans or even change

    3. Judging DependentlyKnowing and Doing What Is Good

The Bible defines sin in two ways:(1) doing wrong; (2) not doing right. The first definition is given by John:

sin is the transgression of the law(1 John 3:4).

The second definition is given inJames 4:17: Therefore to him that

knoweth to do good, and doeth it not,

    to him it is sin.

Last WordThoughts From the Mount of Blessing 126

He who is guilty of wrong is the firstto suspect wrong. By condemninganother he is trying to conceal or

    excuse the evil of his own heart....[N]o sooner had the first pair sinnedthan they began to accuse each other;

and this is what human nature willinevitably do when uncontrolled by

    the grace of Christ
