When installing a torque converter into a 4L80E transmission you can follow thestandard GM torque converter installation instructions. This is a very straight forwardinstallationinmostcases.Ifyouareinstallingthisbehindanearlymodelengine(priortoLS) there area fewtechnical issuesyouwillencounter. The flexplatespacing iscriticalwhenboltingthe4L80Etoa‘96&earlierengineapplication.TheB&M4L80EconverterswillboltuptothecatalogedB&Mflexplatesusingthethreemountingholesonthe11‐1/2”diameterboltcircle. When installingona latemodel flexplatewithsixholeson the11‐1/2”boltcircleusethesixsuppliedbolts. Testfittheconverteruptotheflexplatetobecertainthecrankpilotontheconverterengagesintothecrankshaft.Thefitintothecrankshouldbeasnugfit, iftheconverterwillnotslipintotherearofthecranktheremaybedirtorburrsonthecrankI.D.thatmustbecorrectedforaproperfit.Afterthistestfithasverifiedthepilotontheconverterisproperlyengagingthecrankshaftpilottheconvertermustbefittedintothetransmission.
Besuretofilltheconverterwithonetotwoquartsofautomatictransmissionfluid(B&MSyntheticTrickShift#80286)priortoinstallingtheconverterintothetransmission.Theimpellerhubonthe4L80Econverterhas ‘DriveFlats’thatengagethepumpgear inthetransmission.Becertainthesearelinedupwiththepumpgearandfullyengagepriortoplacing theconverter / transmissionassemblyup to theengineblock. Theconvertershouldhave1/16”–1/8”pulluptotheflexplateforproperengagement.
Ifthereismorethan1/16”‐1/8”spacebetweenthedriveplateandtherearsurfaceoftheflexplatewhenthetransmissionbellhousingmeetstheengineblockyouwillneedtomeasurethedistancebetweentheflexplateandthedriveplate.Ifthisdimensionis3/16”,for example, you will need to shim the converter using 1/8” spacers (flat washers)betweentheflexplateandtheconverterdriveplate.Becertainthepilotontheconverterremainsengagedinthecrankshaftpilot.Torquetheflexplatetoconverterboltsto30‐35ft.lbs.
ThisGMPerformancePartcrankshaftspacermustbeusedwheninstallinga
transmissionbuiltbefore1997toaLS1‐typemotor.TheLSdesignsmallblockcrankshaftflangeis10mmshorterinrelationtotheendofthebellhousingflange.Ifusinganautomatictransmissionbuiltbefore1997,therewillbea10mmgapbetweenthecrankshaftandtorqueconverterwhenthebellhousingisboltedtotheblock.ThiswillrequireaflexplatespacertoadaptolderautomatictransmissionstotheLS1‐typeengine.TheLS1flywheelisreused,anditgoesonbeforethespacer.Torqueconverterboltholesintheflywheelmustbeelongatedtofitthenon‐LS1torqueconverterboltcircle.
