New Consignment Shop Opens in OtsegoSMK Consignment LLC is now open at 360 E. Allegan St., Suite D, Otsego, right on

the curve before you get to downtown. Owners Shannon Makela-Klinkhammer and LeoKlinkhammer have always dreamed of having their own consignment shop and now it'sa reality. The name “SMK” came from Shannon’s initials and also the initials of her threedaughters. Shannon explains that her parents bought the building back in 2012. THE OLD RUGGED CROSSI remember like it was yesterday. I was 12 yearsold when my father and I drove to the Art Hawks farmnorth of Watervliet. It was the season of Lent. Art’sson, Dale, is my same age. We went with ourfathers into the woods where we found a couple oflarge branches from a tree that had fallen from awinter storm.The branches were hauled by tractor to a pick-uptruck. We loaded the branches onto the truck anddelivered them to the church where they were madeinto a large cross which was placed in the front of thealtar of my home church for the Community GoodFriday service. It stood l0 feet high; an imposingpresence and powerful symbol of our Lord’s death.My father (the late Rev. Emerson Minor) began theservice by remarking, “I don’t know how our Lordcarried it. It took two grown men and two 12 year oldboys to get this into the church.”I have studied the Bible and theology most of mylife. I have visited the holy spot where traditionmarks the place of our Lord’s death. Yet, nothing ismore powerful to me than my childhood memory ofthe cross.This brings to mind that familiar old hymn writtenby Methodist Evangelist George Bennard, a friend ofmy late grandfather, Rev. I.W. Minor. Rev. Bennardwas rumored to have been at a meeting in Pokagon(between Dowagiac and Niles, MI) in the year l913when he finished the words of his popular hymn.Sometime between l939-l946 my mother, Eleanor(Minor) Tubergen, remembers the great hymn writerconducting evangelistic services and singing thisgreat hymn in front of a large cross in the sanctuaryof our church (Otsego United Methodist Church) …another powerful memory of the cross.
