Bible Story: The People Worshiped God

Based on 2 Chronicles 3:1-17; 5:1-14

Finally, the work was done! Solomon finished building the temple, or church building, in Jerusalem. The temple replaced the tent church the people had used. The temple was beautiful. Solomon used wood and gold. The temple was decorated with palm trees, gold chains, and jewels.

Solomon brought the things his father David had given for the temple: silver, gold, and other things. Solomon put the items in the temple. He asked all the leaders of the temple and people to come together. The priests carried the Ark of the Covenant, a special box to remember God's promises, into the temple.

When the men came out of the temple there were singers and musicians waiting to worship. The singers began their song [hand signal; hand down] and 120 trumpeters blew their trumpets [hand signal; hand down]. Others played cymbals, harps, and lyres [hand signal; hand down].

All together the singers and musicians thanked God for the temple [hand signal; hand down]. "God is good," they sang. "He loves us forever" [hand signal; hand down].

Before anyone can move, someone will answer my question and ask, 'Teacher, may we?' I will tell you how to move." Read aloud a Bible story review question. Challenge one child to answer. Lead all of the girls (if a girl answered) or boys (if a boy answered) to "take one giant step," "move 2 baby steps," "take a giant leap," or a similar movement direction. Pause for the child to ask: "Teacher, may we?" Reply: "The [state group] may move." Continue the process to review the Bible story. Start over each time someone reaches the opposite side of the room. • Copy of memory verse • Streamers • Chenille stems • Rhythm sticks (craft sticks if rhythm sticks aren’t available)

Bring children to the large-group location in the room. Comment: "When the people finished building the temple, they were very happy. Some of the people played instruments and other people sang songs. The people thanked and praised God. Have you ever watched a parade? What did you see in the parade?" Encourage responses. Remark: "Let's pretend to march in a parade." Distribute chenille stems and streamers. Demonstrate how to twist a chenille stem around one end of the streamer to create a handle. Encourage kids to march around the room waving their streamers. Instruct the preschoolers to sit in a circle as you collect the supplies. Distribute two rhythm sticks to each child. Tap a pattern with the sticks. Instruct the children to repeat the pattern. Take turns allowing children to tap patterns for everyone to follow. Keep a steady beat with the rhythm sticks while singing the following song: (Tune of “God Is So Good”)

I can worship God, I can worship God, I can worship God
