As horse women, and horsemen, being around horses is often an experience that we take for granted, consideringit’s our normal. We also tend to take for granted our horse’s behavior. Most of the time, they are well-behaved, andwell-mannered. But our reminders to be more cautious are often painful. So, what if there was a way we could bereminded of how truly magnificent and powerful these creatures are, but minus the trip to the hospital?

Well, good news, there is! Enter the Oak Creek Canyon Wild Horses. This herd is managed by Diana Palmer, and has roamed free in the Tehachapi Mountains for nearly a hundred years. The herd’s origins are unknown, butit is believed that they are descended from formerly domesticated Morgan horses, used by farmers and miners. The horses are wild, but only semi-feral. They come whenDiana calls… well, most of the time, anyway. The horsesare cautious of humans, but show no qualms to letting youwalk among them. They’re also partial to alfalfa hay.

Upon our arrival, the host, Diana Palmer, gave us aninteresting history lesson, as well as educating us on theirbreed, which is strongly supported to be Morgan. If theyare, in fact, Morgan horses, that means that this herd wasinvolved in the foundation of the breed. There are about110 of them, and they are separated into different groups.

When Diana called the first group of the horses, theywere just little black dots on a hill, below windmills. But, with horses, there is a domino effect. When theydidn’t come, we moved our parade of trucks up a littlefarther. They responded when a member of the herddecided they were hungry, and came running. Many ofthe mares were pregnant, and a few even had very youngfoals with them. They were well-fed, and all wereathletically built.

We moved on after about ten, fifteen minutes, and wegot to the meadow. There was already a large groupwaiting for us, with more horses on the way. We spreadout the hay, to reduce infighting, but there were a few

disagreements. The horses were all extremely beautiful, and graceful. There were, surprisingly, a few bachelorstallions within the herd, who made advances on a fewmares. There were plenty of adorable foals, one of whichwas extremely friendly.

The horses, however, didn’t like being touched, orhandled, which is understandable, seeing as they are stillsemi-feral. Despite this, they are calm and mellow, evenif you are near them. Mares with foals tend to steer clear. There is a bit of infighting once the hay clumps run low,so be sure to steer clear of any rear ends pointed yourway if you visit.

The most dominant stallion, Tip, named for a goodportion of his right ear being missing, is fairly easy tospot. He is temperamental compared to the rest of theherd, and the others often give him a wide berth.

A quick PSA on herd safety so that you don’t end upin the middle of a brawl, or on the receiving end of akick, keep to the outskirts of the herd. I know, you wantto be in the middle of it all, but being in the center of theherd limits your maneuverability, and the space you haveto get away. Have fun, but be mindful. Watch the ears, and the rears, of the horses around you. And, don’t chasethem. They don’t understand that you just want to petthem. You’re moving toward them, which means youwant them to move.

I’m going to end this article with a big thank-you toMr. Pitzler, who suggested I write on this subject in thefirst place, and Mrs. Pitzler for being a wonderful host. For anyone who has a comment on my writing, or wouldlike to suggest future topics, feel free to talk to me at theRRT’s monthly meetings.Thank you, and have a wonderful day!

Some History on The Wild HorsesDating back to the 1920s, stories began to be passed down

by local residents about a band of black or brown wild horsesroaming in Oak Creek Canyon. Diana and Steve Palmerbecame caretakers for the primary landowner in 1986, andbegan to research the history of these horses. Diana gatheredall the records she could find on previous landowners whohad lived in the area, and talked to many old-timers. Thehorses were described the same as they are today:predominantly black or seal brown, some bay, and withminimal white markings. The horses are well-built,compact, and muscular with short backs, full roundhindquarters with a long sloping hip and necks of mediumlength rising out of a well laid back shoulder, excellent feetand legs, lean bony heads with short pricked ears, intelligentfaces and large kind eyes, full and heavy manes and tails. The canyon offers a number of springs and huge meadowwhich provides lush grazing from late spring until fall.

Diana had DNA testing done to determine the breedorigin. The genetic data does not rule out the Morgan as aprimary ancestor, and based upon oral history and physicalappearance, Morgan ancestry is likely. The testing didclearly identify these are definitely feral horses, and not ofSpanish mustang origin. As the herd is on private land, the

BLM has never had a role in managing them as they havealmost all other wild horse herds still in existence.

Although these horses have managed to survive on theirown for nearly a hundred years, recent conditions have madethings difficult for them. They have lived in peace, withplenty of grazing. The horses show a tolerance for eatingacorns, and though acorns are normally often poisonous tohorses, these horses are never bothered by them.

However, several fires, especially the Canyon fire of2011, combined with the worst drought seen in 30 years, and increased wind turbine projects have encroached thegrazing. Dirt bikers have considered it entertaining to comeinto the meadow and chase the horses. The Palmers havebeen compelled to intervene and have been supplementinghay during the winter as well as gelding stallions to helpcontrol the herd size, which is around 115, divided into anumber of small bands.

Also, they have increased efforts to help some of thehorses find homes through adoption. This year will be thesecond year for the nonprofit Vaquero Heritage Trainers’Challenge Event hosted by trainer Jeremy Dunn. This event, will feature the Oak Creek Wild Horses, which will takeplace October 9-11th at Sterling’s Arena in Tehachapi.Check www.oakcreekwildhorses.com for details.
