Does not necessarily include fairies
Usually considered a literary rather than oral tale
The story is typically about a young individual
The main character encounters strange and magical events
Often thought to start with “once upon a time” or “once there was”
The Brothers GrimmTimeline
1785-Jacob Ludwig Carl Grimm is born in Hanau, Germany to Phillip Grimm, a lawyer and jurist and Dorothea Grimm
1786-Wilhelm Carl Grimm is born (the two brothers were oldest of 5 children)
1791-The family moves to Steinau
1796-Their father dies, causing family hardship
1798-The brothers go to high school in Kassel
1802-Jacob goes to the University of Marburg
1803-Wilhelm enrolls at the University as well

1806-Jacob becomes secretary of the Hessian War College
1808-Their mother dies, Jacob becomes librarian to King Jerome of Westphelia
1812-Volume 1 of Nursery and Household Tales or Kinder- und Hausmärchen is published
1814-Wilhelm becomes secretary to Librarian in Kassel
1815-Volume 2 of Household Tales Published
1816-Part I of German Legends Published
1818-Part II of German Legends Published
Wilhelm Carl Grimm(1786-1859)
-always suffered from health problems
-married his childhood friend Dorothea in 1825
-Had 5 children, one died in infancy
-Was invited to move to Berlin in 1840
-Began giving lectures at the university
-Worked on life-long project of creating ultimate German
Dictionary along with brother Jacob entitled Deutsches Worterburch-Only managed to reach F before
their deaths-Died from an infection in 1859
Jacob Ludwig Carl
Grimm(1785-1863)
-was extremely close to brother Wilhelm
-lived with Wilhelm after he married Dorothea
-continued to live with Dorothea and the children after Wilhelm’s death
-suffered a stroke and died in 1863
-Was buried next to Wilhelm
