For the next 7 weeks, we will focus on helping kids cope with grief, such as a tragedy. Unfortunately, these are things that we experience in life, and children need extra love and support in order to feel
safe in this process. With proper modeling of how to handle emotions while providing a safe, loving environment where you are listening to their needs, children will be able to cope with whatever tragedy occurs…personal or glob-al. Each week, we will focus on one step, which will help you and your child be able to learn and grow in this pro-cess together.
At a difficult time like this in our nation's history, parents all over this country-and the world-are wondering, "What do I tell my kids about this? What do I do?"
Children have an incredible capacity for strength, and parents can play a powerful role in helping their children cope with horribly difficult events. Here are some practical guidelines:
#1: Be honest about your emotions while modeling strength.
#2: Limit your child's exposure to media coverage of the event. #3: Give them the facts about the event. #4: Listen, listen, listen. #5: Let them know that they are safe. #6: To the greatest extent possible, maintain daily routines.
#7: Involve them in helping others. There are few things more therapeutic than helping others. Even actions that may seem small, like writing letters of support or sending a box of food to rescue workers, can mean a great deal. An elementary school principal who followed these tips voiced amazement at how they work. "I can't believe how well our school dealt with this yesterday. The teachers were calm, and so were the kids. Everyone is very saddened, but we are going to make it through!" One last thought: Following these guidelines can help, but it is just as important to take good care of yourself. The healthier you are, the healthier your kids will be.

Parent Satisfaction Survey open through April 17 Parents can help our school in a meaningful way by taking a Parent Satisfaction Survey. The survey is open March 20 – April 17. Parents can complete the quick, anonymous survey online at www.humbleisd.net. Or, if you prefer a paper copy, you can pick one up in our school office. Responses will be analyzed to determine what is working well in our school and any areas that may need improvement. Humble ISD is conducting a survey for every school in the district. Parents with more than one child in our school should complete only one survey. If you have children in more than one school, you should complete a survey for each school.=
The survey takes just a few minutes, but makes a big difference. Our school will use the results to guide our priorities and plans. We are asking all parents to participate. We appreciate you taking the time to share your opinions and experiences.
A paper copy has been sent home with your child today. Please take a minute to fill it out and return it to school by Friday, April 17th or click here to complete it online https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/HISD_Parent_2015.
