When he professed his belief that Jesus is the Christ, the Lord promised that "Thou art Peter and on this rock will I build My Church," meaning on the rock of faith in the Savior. Peter's confession of faith was soon followed by a sharp rebuke from the Lord. Peter said that he would never leave his Lord, and was answered by the prediction of his triple denial, which later took place. Later, Peter made reparation for his triple denial by a triple protestation of love. Andrew - A disciple of John the Baptist, Andrew heard him refer to Jesus as the Lamb of God. Andrew asked for an audience and saw Jesus for a day, then proclaimed, "We have found the Messiah," in itself a creed and confession for the Christian faith. He brought his brother, Simon -Peter, to Christ. Although not one of the inner circle, he played the first role in several events which are recorded. Eusebius in his Church History states that Andrew later went to Scythia. According to tradition he was martyred at Patras, Greece, crucified on an X-shaped cross, which since has become known as St. Andrew's Cross. James (The Greater) - He was the son of Zebedee. He, with his elder brother John and with Peter, constituted the privileged group - the inner circle of the disciples. James was present at the Transfiguration and the Agony in Gethsemane. His zeal was ardent and he and his brother were named by the Lord "Boanerges," which means "sons of thunder." James was beheaded by Herod Agrippa I in A. D. 44, the first of the Twelve to suffer martyrdom. John - He was one of the inner circle with Peter and James. The son of Zebedee, he and his brother James were named the "sons of thunder." John is the author of the fourth Gospel, the Book of Revelation and three Catholic Epistles. He was imprisoned with Peter and later appeared in the Sanhedrin. John also was sent with Peter to Samaria, where they prayed that the converts might receive the Holy Spirit. In Jerusalem, he was present at the Council of the Apostles. Philip - He is the Apostle from Bethsaida who obeyed the call of Jesus and led Nathanael to Christ. At the feeding of the 5,000 people, Jesus said to Philip to buy bread, and Philip answered Him, "Two hundred denarii would not buy enough bread for each of them to get a lile." The Apostle Philip preached the Gospel in Asia and suffered crucifixion, according to tradition. Bartholomew - His name is patronymic, meaning "son of Tolmai." Sometimes he is identified with Nathanael whom Philip led to Christ. According to the historian Eusebius, when Pantainus of Alexandria visited India between A.D. 150 and 200, he found there the Gospel according to Mahew left behind by Bartholomew, one of the Apostles. According to tradition, Bartholomew was flayed to death at Albanapolis in Armenia. Mahew - He was the evangelist who was a Jew and a tax-collector referred to as Levi before he was called by Christ, Whom be followed. He is the author of the First Gospel. In his genealogy of Jesus Christ, he emphasizes the Lord's human nature and origin. Therefore, in Christian symbolism, Mahew has been represented by the figure of man (cf. Rev 4:7). The icon of Mahew in the Orthodox Church is to be found in one of the four triangles which are formed by the arches connected to the dome of the Church. Thomas - He was called the Twin. On the way to Bethany he offered to die with Jesus. Thomas doubted the resurrection of Christ unless he were to touch the wounds of the Risen Lord, but later confessed his faith in Him: "My Lord and My God" - the first to confess so explicitly the Lord's divinity. James (The Lesser) - He was the son of Alphaeus. Was he the Lord's relative? This is doubted. Was he James the younger (or the "lesser," Ma. 15:40)? There are insufficient reasons to establish this either. Nothing is known of him. Simon - He was called Cananaean and Zealot, two terms of the same Hebrew word. According to the Apocryphal "Passion of Simon and Jude," both of them preached and underwent martyrdom in Persia. In the New Testament, Simon, one of the brethren of the Lord, was Identified with Simon the Apostle. Jude - He is the Apostle referred to in the Gospel as "Judas of James", "Judas not the Iscariot". He also is known as Thaddaeus or Lebbacus. Jude was the brother of James (or the son of James RV), the "brethren of the Lord" - the Lord's relative. Jude is the author of the Epistle of Jude. Judas Iscariot - A selected Apostle, one of the Twelve, he betrayed Christ to the Jewish Sanhedrin - the supreme council and highest court of justice in Jerusalem - and kissed the Lord at the time of the arrest. He later commied suicide. The title "Iscariot," meaning in Hebrew "man of Kerioth," a place in South Palestine, implies that Judas was from Judea. He was the only one from there, whereas the other Apostles were from Galilee. After his suicide the Apostles elected Mahias to replace him as one of the Twelve Apostles

THE TWELVE APOSTLES—JUNE 30th

Simon, Peter - Born in Bethsaida in Galilee, he was a fisherman and was named by Jesus Christ "Cephas" (in Greek, Peter), and called to be a

fisher of men, an Apostle. In all lists of the Twelve he is named first, and belonged to the inner group of Apostles. He was present at the

Transfiguration and at the Agony of Christ. When he professed his belief that Jesus is the Christ, the Lord promised that "Thou art Peter and

on this rock will I build My Church," meaning on the rock of faith in the Savior. Peter's confession of faith was soon followed by a sharp

rebuke from the Lord. Peter said that he would never leave his Lord, and was answered by the prediction of his triple denial, which later took

place. Later, Peter made reparation for his triple denial by a triple protestation of love.

Andrew - A disciple of John the Baptist, Andrew heard him refer to Jesus as the Lamb of God. Andrew asked for an audience and saw Jesus

for a day, then proclaimed, "We have found the Messiah," in itself a creed and confession for the Christian faith. He brought his brother, Simon

-Peter, to Christ. Although not one of the inner circle, he played the first role in several events which are recorded. Eusebius in his Church

History states that Andrew later went to Scythia. According to tradition he was martyred at Patras, Greece, crucified on an X-shaped cross,

which since has become known as St. Andrew's Cross.

James (The Greater) - He was the son of Zebedee. He, with his elder brother John and with Peter, constituted the privileged group - the inner

circle of the disciples. James was present at the Transfiguration and the Agony in Gethsemane. His zeal was ardent and he and his brother

were named by the Lord "Boanerges," which means "sons of thunder." James was beheaded by Herod Agrippa I in A. D. 44, the first of the

Twelve to suffer martyrdom.

John - He was one of the inner circle with Peter and James. The son of Zebedee, he and his brother James were named the "sons of thunder."

John is the author of the fourth Gospel, the Book of Revelation and three Catholic Epistles. He was imprisoned with Peter and later appeared

in the Sanhedrin. John also was sent with Peter to Samaria, where they prayed that the converts might receive the Holy Spirit. In Jerusalem, he

was present at the Council of the Apostles.

Philip - He is the Apostle from Bethsaida who obeyed the call of Jesus and led Nathanael to Christ. At the feeding of the 5,000 people, Jesus

said to Philip to buy bread, and Philip answered Him, "Two hundred denarii would not buy enough bread for each of them to get a little." The

Apostle Philip preached the Gospel in Asia and suffered crucifixion, according to tradition.

Bartholomew - His name is patronymic, meaning "son of Tolmai." Sometimes he is identified with Nathanael whom Philip led to Christ.

According to the historian Eusebius, when Pantainus of Alexandria visited India between A.D. 150 and 200, he found there the Gospel

according to Matthew left behind by Bartholomew, one of the Apostles. According to tradition, Bartholomew was flayed to death at

Albanapolis in Armenia.

Matthew - He was the evangelist who was a Jew and a tax-collector referred to as Levi before he was called by Christ, Whom be followed. He

is the author of the First Gospel. In his genealogy of Jesus Christ, he emphasizes the Lord's human nature and origin. Therefore, in Christian

symbolism, Matthew has been represented by the figure of man (cf. Rev 4:7). The icon of Matthew in the Orthodox Church is to be found in

one of the four triangles which are formed by the arches connected to the dome of the Church.

Thomas - He was called the Twin. On the way to Bethany he offered to die with Jesus. Thomas doubted the resurrection of Christ unless he

were to touch the wounds of the Risen Lord, but later confessed his faith in Him: "My Lord and My God" - the first to confess so explicitly the

Lord's divinity.

James (The Lesser) - He was the son of Alphaeus. Was he the Lord's relative? This is doubted. Was he James the younger (or the "lesser," Matt.

15:40)? There are insufficient reasons to establish this either. Nothing is known of him.

Simon - He was called Cananaean and Zealot, two terms of the same Hebrew word. According to the Apocryphal "Passion of Simon and

Jude," both of them preached and underwent martyrdom in Persia. In the New Testament, Simon, one of the brethren of the Lord, was

Identified with Simon the Apostle.

Judas Iscariot - A selected Apostle, one of the Twelve, he betrayed Christ to the Jewish Sanhedrin - the supreme council and highest court of

justice in Jerusalem - and kissed the Lord at the time of the arrest. He later committed suicide. The title "Iscariot," meaning in Hebrew "man of

Parish Council President Message

Dear St. George Parishioners,

Christ Is Risen! Truly Risen!

Congratulations to all our graduates; Sunday School, High School, and College. May they keep on growing, keep adding to the beauty and goodness in the world, keep developing those unique dreams and talents that make them who they are. I look forward in seeing our graduates in church, and hearing about their newest adventures.

As the beginning of summer approaches, our educational wing will be quiet as our Sunday School children and Greek School take a short break. However, our church doors are always open. On June 16th, 50 days after Pasha, we celebrate the Pentecost. Pentecost Sunday commemorates the coming of the Holy Spirit in the form of flames to the Apostles. The Holy Spirit allowed the apostles to speak in other languages as they began preaching the word of Jesus to the Jews who went to Jerusalem for the feast of Pentecost. Pentecost is also recognized as the event of the birth of the Church.

The weekend of May 3rd, 4th and 5th we celebrated the 75th Anniversary of our St. George. Many parishioners from near and far came out to celebrate this milestone. The weekend was filled with love and promises for a bright future for our St. George. Thank you to Bill Kalogredis and his committee for planning such a memorable event.

UPCOMING EVENTS:

ST. GEORGE VACATION CHURCH SCHOOL

Our St. George Vacation Church Camp this year will be the week of June 24th till June 28th from 10 am – 2 pm. All school age children are welcome to experience fellowship, crafts, music, lessons, lunch and snacks. For more infor-mation contact Anthoula Psihalinos @ 484-431-7548.

MONTESSSORI SCHOOL

Our parish council will continue to work hard to prepare our facilities for the Montessori school’s arrival in the fall. This is an incredible opportunity to assist our parish financially. Our parish council and members of our church are working diligently in bringing in the Montessori school. We are confident and by the grace of God we will provide a safe and educational environment for all our children. If we as a parish, as a place of God, are not welcoming, than who is???

ST. GEORGE FESTIVAL – SEPTEMBER 26, 27, 28 & 29

The planning process has been in full swing for our festival. We have been fortunate that our festival has broken rec-ords two years in a row. As our festival grows, so do the responsibilities; more hands are needed! Please plan to as-sist in any way including with any questions or ideas. In Christ, Demetrios Psihalinos Parish President

SUNDAY SCHOOL NEWS It is hard to believe that the Sunday School year has come to a close. We are so proud the class of 2019, from both High School and College. It is our hope for you that you carry all that you have learned here at St. George into your college experiences, and lives beyond.

I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me: Philippians 4:13 We are so excited to honor the students, for their hard work and attendance for the year on June 9th. Students please make every effort to be here that day. If anyone is interested in becoming a Sunday School teacher, please contact Father, me. We are looking for teachers that can be committed to every Sunday, an ideal situation would be to have 2 teachers per classroom to cover, and help manage the classroom. Thank you for bringing your children to church each and every Sunday, and continuing their education of our faith.

Palms 119:66 Teach me knowledge and good judgment, for I trust your commands Have a wonderful summer and we will see you next year.

In Christ, Sonya Bohmann Sunday School Director

PHILOPTOCHOS NEWS

Christos Anesti The Philoptochos Ladies are forever evolving. During the last six years, I’ve included all parishioners in our activities, our fundraisers, and our many baking projects. I’ve shared with you the role, dedication and fortitude we at St. George Philoptochos are about. Stories about St. Basil, Holy Cross Seminary, and our ever present devotion helping those in need. A New Beginning will be here soon, June 9th we will be our next meeting and we will be electing new officers and a brand new board. Exciting because we have young, spirited and vibrant woman who have joined Philoptochos during the last few years. These are your leaders of tomorrow who will insure the success and vitality of our beloved St. George. They have come to know the strength we possess and the good that can be accomplished. This, however, cannot be made possible unless the ladies have support and gratitude from everyone in the parish. I urge ladies who are not part of this family to join your peers and make a difference. There is still much work to be done. Remember there is strength in numbers. I look forward to working with this new team, and urge you to do the same. I would like to thank Father Anastasios who has helped me negotiate this journey and who has always been supportive of Philoptochos endeavors. Thank you too, to my officers and board who has transformed Philoptochos to what it has become.

In Philoptochos Love, Diane Polites Nayman

Community Shelter

Outreach

Our parish participates in serving dinner to the men at Safe Harbor Shelter in West Chester on the first Tuesday of each month. If you are familiar with the serving routine at the shelter you can sign up for one of the monthly dinners (prepare dinner and serve, either or both). If you are new to the program you can prepare the meal (enough for 24 adults) and come join us at the shelter to serve it. If you wish to make a donation, please make checks payable to St. George – ear-marked for “Community Shelter Outreach.” The donations will be used to purchase food or supplies for the needs of the shelter residents. If you would like to sign up to prepare a meal and volunteer on a Tuesday, please email Effie Hionis at [email protected] or leave a message at the church office and I will get back to you. Our parishioners always have such open hearts. We have had several requests for families who would like to participate

at the shelter. Unfortunately, due to the circumstances of the residents, Safe Harbor does not permit anyone under the age of 12 to volunteer at the shelter. However , families with younger children are welcomed to prepare a meal or desser t for the residence as par t of a gift of giving.

Thanks this month: Many thanks to Mrs. Alexandra Geronikos for preparing and serving a beautiful Italian meal for the residents. Also, thanks to Jerry Hionis and Evan Andreadis for serving the meal. In addition, a check for $250 was presented to Safe Harbor for the needs of the residents collected from money donated by our generous parishioners.

AHEPA #79 NEWS

Finally Spring is here! The weather is warm. Summer is around the corner. AHEPA Chapter #79 would like to wish everyone a wonderful and safe summer. In honor of AHEPA Day that was declared by the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, on June 2nd our Chapter will award 15 scholarships to High School and College students from our community, who have applied and have been selected by the Chapter’s Scholarship committee. The Award ceremo-

ny will take place at St. George Church, Media, PA after Divine Liturgy. It is always a beautiful event. The need for funding is greater than ever, as we saw last year. We always need help. If you can donate a full scholarship or money towards the scholarship fund, it would be greatly appreciated. It’s a great way to memorialize a loved one, too. Please reach out to us if you are interested. We have been selling the annual 50/50 raffle. Tickets are $25 each, 4 for $ $90. Proceeds will go towards the scholarships and other worthy charitable endeavors. Please ask any of the AHEPA Brothers if you want to buy raffle tickets. The drawing will take place on AHEPA Day, June 2nd. Our Chapter appreciates everyone’s support. On June 6th will have our end of year dinner at Concordville Inn. We like to invite all the Chapter’s brothers to rejoice another great year for our Chapter. In addition we will have the Chapter’s elections for next year’s officers. Since this is the end of the year I like to list some of the accomplishments for our chapter. As mentioned above, on June 2nd we will award 15 - $1,000 Scholarships. On November 12th after Church Services our chapter had a breakfast fund raiser. On

February 3rd we had a Cheesesteak fundraiser. On March 9th we had our annual St. Patrick’s Dinner Celebration. All donations went towards the Chapter’s Scholarship fund and other worthy charitable accomplishments. On February 5th our Chapter donated, prepared and served dinner for Safe Harbor residents. Safe Harbor Shelter is a pantry that provides emergency housing and meals for homeless men and women with addictions or mental health issues. We will be doing this again on November 5, 2019. Our Chapter donated $500 towards the District’s “Service Dog for Warriors” program. Service Dog for Warriors is a program by AHEPA to provide Service Dogs for wounded U.S. Veterans suffering from PTSD. For next year we are planning to support many good causes and have our annual St. Patrick’s Celebration on March 14th. By becoming a member you can support many good causes. Come and be part of something special. It doesn’t cost much, doesn’t require a lot of time, and the friendships you make will last forever all while doing good things! Manoli Papadopoulos AHEPA Chapter #79 President
