    Members that have passed away:

    May they Rest in Peace

“Wow! I Didn’t Know That!” Our lives are filled with all kinds of political news these days!

Here are some little-known (and possibly meaningless) facts about

our political process, politicians & leaders:

Although the United States of America was established in 1776, the first American president ever to visit Europe while in office was Woodrow Wilson in 1918.

Thomas Jefferson was the first to be inaugurated in Washington DC. Jefferson also was the only one to walk to and from his inauguration.

Franklin Pierce was once arrested for running over a woman with a carriage.

Sarah Polk, wife of James Polk, selected “Hail to the Chief” to be played whenever a president enters a room.

The US presidential candidate with the highest popular vote ever was Ronald Reagan. In 1984 he secured 54,455,075 votes. Reagan was also the candidate with the highest electoral vote: 525, in 1984. In that year he equaled the 49 states that Nixon carried in 1972.

The candidate who ran the most times for office of the President of the U.S. was Norman Thomas. He ran six times: in 1928, 1932, 1936, 1940, 1944 and 1948.

All of the people in Lyndon Johnson’s family had the initials LBJ, including his dogs!

The leisure suit almost destroyed a political tradition. The polyester lady-killer, popular in the 70’s, was so hard to pierce with a pin that Dem candidate Jimmy Carter initially decided not to waste any money on campaign buttons.

Rutherford B. Hayes was the first president to have a phone. His phone number was 1.

Warren G. Harding once gambled away a set of White House china.

George H.W. Bush survived 4 plane crashes during WWII.

Gerald Ford remains the only unelected vice president and president.
