The Lily Mine saga continues

A huge mining rescue drill arrived at Lily mine late on Thursday to sink a second shaft before any further rescue operations can be undertaken.

After readings, assessments and analysis by rock engineering experts, the team’s geo-technical report recommended that a second outlet be drilled as the existing ventilation shaft proved unstable.

The rescue drill is similar to the one used in the rescue of Chilean miners in 2010, which captured the imagination of people worldwide after all miners were saved who were trapped underground for more than 30 days after an accident.

“Sinking this shaft in a secure area of the mine will increase the safety of rescue workers and continue to allow the mine to operate within the law. By law a mine should have at least two shafts, one entrance and one exit.

“The second shaft will be sunk down to level 5,” says Mike McChesney, Chief

Hanti SchraderOperating Officer of Vantage Goldfields.

The drill is capable of drilling a 660 mm diameter hole and according to the minister of Mineral Resources, Mosebenzi Zwane the matter is being treated with the necessary urgency, given the safety concerns and the geological considerations.

He told the media during a briefing last week that the experts have estimated that it will take approximately two to three weeks before rescue operations can recommence as drilling will be through hard rock.”

Drilling of the second outlet is to start within the next few days.

Pretty Mazibuko, Solomon Nyerenda and Yvonne Mnisi were working in a container, used as a lamp room, when parts of the mine near Barberton caved in. The container fell into an 80-meter deep sinkhole, the size of a rugby field, 13 days ago.

Rubble and debris landed on top of the container in which the three workers are believed to be still trapped. After days of trying to reach them, two more cave-in’s resulted in the call to halt rescue efforts

while experts assess the stability of the area in which the rescue is to take place.

According to the official spokesperson for Vantage Goldfields, Coetzee Zietsman, no changes has occurred in the search and rescue operations.

What is the worst that can happen?

Hanti Schrader& Alex Rose-Innes

We all have a worst case scenario in our heads. Kobus Pottas is still walking around with his what-if after the Lily mine tragedy on 5 February.

For him the cave-in was a nightmare, but his biggest fear is finding the container that slid down the massive hole under a barrage of sand and rock...and inside only one person or one body.

What happened to the other two workers will then maybe never be known. “To find that container and only find one person or only one body in there. That is the worst,” he told NewsHorn’s Hanti Schrader.

As a mine captain, Pottas has seen it all. And now he can add being one of the first two eye witnesses to the mine tragedy, to his list of experiences. He and Werner van Vuuren from the Human Resources department at the mine said they heard the weirdest sound.

It was at 8:04am “At first I thought it was like an explosion of one of the big fans,” said van Vuuren. But after this big bang, there was a “whoosh” sound and then more bangs.

“The two of us were busy at HR with preparations for a hearing. We

ran outside and saw a big cloud of dust. When it subsided we saw what happened. I couldn’t believe my eyes.

“At the time my ears were blocked and I experienced an eerie silence that is very difficult to describe,” said Pottas.

Van Vuuren said he actually cannot even describe what he felt at that moment. “If

we have stepped just a few steps closer, we could have fallen into the gaping hole. The first thing that came to my mind, I must say was assessing damage and saving

lives.”“You know what? This has been

the worst week of my life so far,” Pottas added.

He said the adrenaline was pumping the past week and it

kept him going underground, while van Vuuren remained above ground but he can

identify with the sentiment. “We are all very tired, but I

must say I am very relieved that I was not underground at that stage.”

“Jy weet ek dink ons gaan nog een of ander tyd in onsself vasloop oor al die ooreising,” he said. “But one thing is for sure, none of us will ever forget Friday 5 February 2016.”

And while life continues for the rest of us, for the lost miners and their families’ time is trapped in a container under the surface of what used to be a very prosperous and safe working environment.

Upgrade of Komatipoort’s water works finally commences

The long expected upgrade of the Komatipoort water pumps, motors, feeding pipes, water purification pumps and motors, etc. takes off with the handing over of the instruction from Municipality to the contractors.

On 17 February in Orlando, Komatipoort, the Nkomazi Local Municipality(NLM) handed over the project of the upgrade of the existing water works in Komatipoort, to the contractor.

The meeting, well facilitated by MMC Shongwe of NLM, introduced the scope of the work to be undertaken and assured the locals that unskilled work, in as far as possible, will be done by locals.

The steering committee was also

Ongoing house robberies in Southern Nkomazi

Residents warned to increase their home security.

In spite of arrests made during 2015, a number of house robberies have occurred since early January this year.

The Schoemansdal and Driekoppies areas have been targeted, mostly involving more affluent households and in particular those owning well-known reliable vehicle brands.

In most cases, homes were entered into late at night or early morning, with the attackers spending an hour or more ransacking premises before departing with the vehicles.

The attackers have almost without fail made for the Mozambican border, with vehicles being found at various points close to the border, if at all.

Residents of Nkomazi South are advised to improve their home security, in the form of burglar bars, alarms and other means of keeping criminals out.

The criminals have shown a proclivity for violence and rape in the past, which places them in the “dangerous” category. In addition, vehicle tracking devices have contributed significantly to successful vehicle recoveries on a number of occasions.

As has been demonstrated on occasion, the same gang is eminently willing to hit targets north of the N4 as well. Residents of these towns are advised to be vigilant.

introduced to the residents. This committee will have regular meetings to ensure progress is made and performance kept to the expected standard.

The Steering Committee comprises of the Ward Councilor of ward 7, ward representative and local resident Adri Cloete, NLM’s technical manager Moses Sibiya, the consulting engineer Lubis, and John O’Reilly as well as Jan Engelbrecht.

As has been previously published by NewsHorn and is well known among residents, Engelbrecht and O’Reilly on behalf of the local residents and organised business drove the process to have the works commissioned, culminating after many months in the handover.

“We have requested municipality to do a similar survey, as has been the case with the water project, ith regards to the electricity network of Komatipoort.

“We experience too many black outs, caused by overload, whilst the bulk supply from Eskom to the town is more than sufficient. Such a survey may in fact find that numerous lines need to be replaced, and when replaced, may cause less overloading and fewer to none outages.”

The Municipal Manager told residents that this will be attended to. NewsHorn will publish all progress

in connection with the upgrade in its forthcoming editions and keep the residents of Komatipoort well informed.

Councillor Shongwe, consultant Lubisi, Municipal Technical Manager Sibiyi and the contractor Hazel Theledi of Sitamelasive Trading CC at the handover in Orlando Komatipoort on February 17. Residents were assured of a fair opportunity to be employed where there is scope in terms of the contract.

Car remote key jamming out of control in Malalane according to the CPF

Malalane town has seen a surge of car remote-jamming incidents during the past weeks, with criminal using gate remote control units to prevent cars being locked by their own remote keys.

Many drivers still fail to check that their vehicles are actually locked after they have pressed their remote keys. As a result, the vehicle is left open and unattended when they enter shops, leaving thieves free to ransack it.

There are several risk factors and warning signs that drivers should look for every time they park and lock a vehicle. Certain vehicles are also at higher risk than others, based on circumstances. When these apply, it is virtually guaranteed that thieves are targeting a vehicle.

Firstly, out-of-town vehicles are prime targets, in particular those with vehicle registrations from other provinces. Thieves know that locals are generally careful, and target “innocents” as a preference.

Even if one resides in Malalane, the fact that one drives a Gauteng-registered vehicle creates the perception of being an unwary target.

Locals do not come off scot-free in this regard. Thieves do their homework and often pay for information, or obtain such through threats. A person may be specifically targeted because of working for a particular company, known to use and

Malalane CPFtake home notebook computers. There is ample indication of this having occurred in the past.

If one is observed at any location (home, work, or when visiting clients) to handle a laptop, one risks become a specific target.

Warning signs indicating that one is directly targeted may include being followed around by another vehicle. In this instance, thieves trail the intended target, and when the vehicle stops at a shop, pull in directly adjacent to it.

When the target driver leaves the vehicle and attempts to lock it, the thieves jam the remote key using their own equipment, resulting in the vehicle being left open.

Surprisingly few people check whether their cars have actually locked as intended, providing ample opportunity for the vehicle to be plundered.

Groups of people standing around in parking areas are also a warning sign, as are vehicles parked near popular businesses or ATM sites, with people simply sitting inside and doing nothing but look around.

Should one notice these conditions once having parked, the safest action is to simply drive away.

Once a person has left a vehicle unlocked and unattended, criminals waste no time in removing valuables. It takes but seconds, and happens but a moment after the owner

has entered a shop. Laptop bags are slung over shoulders,

and carried openly as though the legitimate property of the thief.

The criminal that removes it from the vehicle will also more often than not immediately hand it over to an accomplice, to avoid being caught with evidence should someone have noticed the crime occurring.

In one specific incident, the thief went to the getaway car, found it locked

and put the bag down next to the vehicle to avoid being caught in possession of it.

He then stood in front of the vehicle and waited until his

accomplices returned before collecting it again. These are all sure signs of criminal activity - if noticed, one should write down vehicle

registrations and report it to the SAPS immediately.

Photographs are valuable references, if they can be safely taken. As a courtesy,

business owners near the incident should be informed as

well - they generally know what to do about it.

The civilian safety officials present in certain locations around town are intended to provide a deterrent to criminals, in particular to those targeting tourists.

Unfortunately, they are often intimidated and threatened with harm to themselves and their families, should they interfere or

intervene. While there are individuals among them

with sufficient fortitude and courage to perform their duties as intended, their presence should not serve as an indication of safety.

Thieves do their

homework and often pay for information

In short:

• If another vehicle pulls in alongside once one has parked, be extra careful. If in doubt as to their intentions, leave. In any case, verify that the remote key actually locks the vehicle, before leaving for the shop entrance;

• Do not stop within 10 metres of any group of loitering individuals, at any parking lot. This is frequently used as a cover for being close enough to a vehicle to jam it.

Again, should one decide to ignore it, ensure the vehicle is locked before departing;

• NEVER leave valuables accessible through windows. Most bakkies have a sliding window at the rear of the cabin, which is quite easily opened and allows access to valuables;

• Only the truly stupid among criminals still break into vehicles. Car remote jamming is now the method of choice, as it leaves no incriminating evidence of damage behind.

Do not fall for this trap. Insurance companies commonly refuse to pay claims related to thefts where there is no damage or other evidence of unauthorised;

• ALWAYS REPORT SUCH CRIMES TO THE SAPS.

“For me it was such an honour being part of this rescue operation. Seeing the pain on the family’s faces and bodies, waiting for news about their loved ones, makes one

realise how much we have to be thankful for.”

Your legal firearms may no longer be legally licensed - make sure or go to jail!

New demands on firearm license holders.MALALANE - All firearm licence holders

beware! Check the expiry date of your firearm licence TODAY!

You need to apply for a renewal no later than 90 days before the expiry date of the licence.

That is what the Firearms Control Act, Act no 60 of 2000, requires of you. Never enforced before, this rule has now been placed in the spotlight.

A recent directive from the South African Police Service (SAPS) highlighted

Hanti Schraderthe consequences of late application for renewal of licenses.

Owners of firearms are required by law to apply for renewal in time, failing which they will forfeit the right to do so.

As a result, the firearm effectively becomes illegal the day after it expires, exposing the otherwise law-abiding owner to charges and penalties usually reserved for murderers and robbers.

As part of the directive, the SAPS states that people that those that have missed the deadline can hand in or otherwise legally dispose of their firearms prior to the expiry date, and so avoid prosecution.

This directive, dated 3rd February 2016,

was forwarded to designated firearm officers countrywide, from the office of the Acting National Commissioner of Police, Lt Gen JK Phahlane.

This directive relates only to licenses issued in terms of section 24 of the Act 60 of 2000. The old green licenses are not affected by this in any way and remain legal.

According to circular 27/5/2/1, applications in less than 90 days before expiry may be considered for renewal, if the reasons supplied for the late application, has been accepted by the Registrar.

Once an application for renewal has been

accepted by the SAPS, whether late or not, firearms can be retained pending approval of the renewal application.

Mel Preddy, representative of the Malalane Community Police Forum confirmed that an owner of the firearm retains full ownership and right of disposal up to the date of the expiry of the license.

This includes the right to sell it to a registered firearms dealer, formally hand it in to the SAPS for destruction or ultimately surrendering it due to license expiry.

He stressed the importance of distinguishing between the latter two options, as the directive by no means implies destruction of surrendered firearms.

The best questions to ask the estate agent when viewing a property!

Viewing a property can be an overwhelming experience at times. It’s easy to get caught up in the look and feel of a house and forget some of the most important questions to ask the estate agent.

Fine and Country Lowveld Kruger South (LKS) shares their key questions to ask while viewing a potential new home.

Each prospective buyer will have their own list of questions, says Engelbrecht - principal of Fine and Country LKS However, these proposed questions should definitely be asked, according to him and should always be raised.

Some of these are particularly important when doing the advisable second viewing.

•How long has the property been on the

market? If it’s been a long time, ask the agent what the reason may be;

•No matter if you have school age children or not, it is advisable to check the school catchments as homes within good school catchments will hold their value;

•Take note of the local amenities, even if you don’t need public transport or a local shop within walking distance. This is especially important for future re-sale purposes.

•How long had the previous sellers had the property and how many times had it changed hands? This is a good question, because if the house has changed many hands in a short time there could be a reason why;

•Why are the current owners selling? How soon will they be able to vacate if a sale is agreed on;

•If it is a flat or apartment, what are the

additional charges and levies? Are there any age restrictions? Can you have pets? Is parking allocated and is there any guest parking;

•Are there mains services? How old is the geyser and has it been regularly checked by a registered professional;

•Had the current sellers done any updating or re-decorating during their period at the home? If so, do they have any receipts or warranties still in place;

•Has there been any planning passed or applied for;

•What are the boundaries and are there any issues;

•What are the neighbours like and have there been any disputes;

•If the house is situated on a private road, who maintains it and pays for upkeep;

•Have they ever been burgled or flooded and what is the general crime situation in the area.

Fine and Country LKS suggests that if you like the property, view it a second time at a different time of day (morning, afternoon or evening) and also during busier times of

the day. Ask the agent for a longer appointment so you can really take your time at the property.

The main question is why the owner is selling. This will open up a wide range of information useful to the discerning purchaser, including an indication as to required time scales and whether or not the sale is discretionary or not.

Less generic, it is appropriate to ask, of course, what is important to you, before the viewing.

There are always matters specifically relevant to the needs of

each individual buyer. For example, if access to schools is

important, ask about it. If internet speed is a key issue, enquire about the speed of internet in the area as well.

Fine and Country reminds buyers that by law, estate agents cannot mislead buyers. To comply with the Consumer Protection Regulations, (which replaced the Property Misdescriptions Act in October 2013), estate agents should essentially not mislead prospective purchasers - either knowingly or unknowingly.

This also again emphasises the value of a property expert assisting in sales, a reliable source and reference, which is absent in direct seller-to-buyer-transactions.

Fine and Country LKS can attest to the fact that their consultants are familiar with the relevant properties and the environment and the latest trends and developments in the area, to be able to properly advise buyers and sellers.

The principals Engelbrechts could be reached on 082-784-5682 (Jan) or 082-561-3301 (Chris).

This evaluation aims to determine whether UAV’s can add value to, amongst others, anti-poaching operations and if so, under which operating conditions and in combination with what type of sensors and UAV platforms, which is the main focus regarding the functional performance of these.

South African National Parks (SANParks) announced in March 2015 that drones were to be tested in the KNP.

At the time SANPark’s Chief Executive

Officer Mr Fundisile Mketeni, explained that testing will take place under the aegis of the Rhino Protection Programme, which is a collaborative agreement with SANParks, the Department of Environmental Affairs, Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife and the Peace Parks Foundation.

“By the end of the project we will have a lot of information about the use of available technology in anti-poaching operations and be able to make informed decisions on what is best for our environment,” Mketeni added.

Otto Werdmüller Von Elgg, director at UDS told NewsHorn that the testing of the technology involves flying in different conditions, the using of different kinds of airframes, which types of sensors to use and to access the best and effective height to fly these drones.

“For us this is a huge learning curve and a honour to work so closely with the teams looking out for the rhinos. These magnificent animals deserve the best.”

The Head of Special Projects at SANParks, Maj Gen (ret) Johan Jooste confirmed to NewsHorn, “that no conclusive technology has been forthcoming and that the testing and evaluating of various high tech instruments has not been conclusive so far. It is still ongoing.”

The Peace Parks Foundation is funding a similar, but separate pilot project in Ezemvelo. UDS is also the service provider.

The stark reality of the continued dry conditions in the Kruger National Park (KNP) is that animals leave the park in search of food and water. This has been the reason why three elephants were recently shot in the Matsulu area after escaping from the Park. These elephants simply walked across the Crocodile River which is at an all-time low.

A complaint was recently received by the office of the Mpumalanga Tourism & Parks Authority (MTPA) of an elephant that has been spotted on the farm Stentor, in the Matsulu area.

The MTPA officials responded and on arrival in the area, local residents were grouped together and armed with buckets, pangas and knifes.

It has been a tradition for as long as can be recalled that indigents expect to collect meat of stray animals breaking out of a conservation area.

According to Riaan de Lange, head of Professional Hunting in the Wildlife Protection Services Department at MTPA, what surprised them though was to see how appetent the people were for game meat, to the extent that they were blocking the way for the elephants to be chased back to KNP.

“A fixed-wing aircraft from KNP tried to chase the elephants back to the Park, but after numerous attempts, the escape route was blocked by residents.

The animals were then forced into a sugarcane field on a nearby farm. The Park’s aircraft had to cede attempts and a decision was taken to rather cull the elephants.

The heads were removed in order to extract the ivory, which by law, belongs to the MTPA.”

Drought and poverty - deadly combination for animals

More than 200 residents from Matsulu in a madcap rush literally attacked the carcasses to put meat on the table for their families.

The spokesperson for the KNP, William Mabasa, said that animals often escaped from the park in search of greener pastures and under such circumstances were no longer the park’s responsibility.

“Animals often trespass and venture onto nearby farms, destroying crops. But it is very rare to hear that people have been killed by these roaming animals.

Kholofelo Nkambule, spokesperson for the MTPA said “all efforts were made by rangers from the MTPA and the KNP to chase the

elephants back into the Park, but the crowd would have nothing of this.

Before the rangers could remove the carcasses, the community members had already sliced them open, filling their buckets with fresh meat amidst much pushing and shouting.” Many sell the meat thus obtained, in an effort to earn some income.

Elephant numbers increased dramatically in recent years. “As a result of this, their vast dietary requirements and expansive ranges, elephants sometimes roam outside the borders of protected areas in search of food,” says Mduduzi Ndlovu and Emma Devereux from the University of the Witwatersrand on

the The Conversation website. “Farmers in communities surrounding

national parks rely heavily on subsistence agriculture for food and income. Unfortunately, when elephants venture into these human settlements, they cause significant damage to crops and property, resulting in major financial losses to rural farmers.”

South African National Parks (SANParks) has, through a protocol on human versus wildlife conflict, only made provision for compensation as a result of loss caused by specific animals to livestock only.

Mabasa confirmed to NewsHorn that the principle is that wild animals are the responsibility of the land owner on which it is found.

In other words, lions in KNP are the responsibility of SANParks. Lions found in Malamulele are the responsibility of the Limpopo Provincial Government.

A preliminary test phase was conducted in 2014, whilst the next formal test phase will launch officially this motnh.

The drones will provide live images which can be accessed or viewed remotely from anywhere across the globe on portable devices such as laptops, or even a cell phone, enabling faster reaction time and better communication with ground teams. Viva rhinos viva!

On completion of the evaluation trials, significant knowledge gained may be made

public and NewsHorn’s editorial team will keep

South Africa is known as the rape capital of the world with 3 558 reported rapes in Mpumalanga last year. What this amounts to is that every two and a half hour, a woman is raped somewhere in the province. This adds up to nine women per day.

Despite the government’s anti-abuse drives, very little has really changed for female victims of family violence, rape or physical abuse.

A new resident in Malalane who moved from the Cape Province (her husband was transferred here), Amanda de Swardt, became involved in the Go Purple Foundation.

This foundation was started 16 years ago by a police woman on the East Rand of Johannesburg. This ex-cop retired and used her pension to start a drive to give women back their dignity, their voice and the ability to say, I had been there, but I survived. The purple hair serves as an acknowledgement that rape and abuse can be overcome and Amanda, a former rape victim, is testimony to that fact.

Amanda has opened a trauma room at the local SAPS in Malalane and with the assistance of Const. Bonkululekho Sibiya, aims to make a difference in the town and Nkomazi as a whole.

During December last year,

Go purple and stop being a victim

police in Malalane were called out to three serious incidences of spousal abuse in Malalane and whilst the public assumes that it only happens to the less educated, poorer classes, this cannot be further from the truth. Abuse and rape do not consider money, status, education or colour – it happens across the board to women who carry scars for the rest of their lives.

Amanda, known by her purple hair, has created a safe haven from virtually nothing at the Malalane police station, but is in desperate need for volunteers and support from the community.

She has also now become part of the global Free Bra Campaign which was started in the USA and aims to provide every female victim of abuse with not only the psychological means to overcome their trauma, but also to once again feel good about themselves. These brassieres each carry a tag, lovingly made with a positive and uplifting

message.What Amanda currently needs

to operate the trauma room to full capacity is someone to fix the air conditioner, a device for the wall onto which she can place a television set, old magazines and books, crayons, blankets, pillows and of course, bras.

Any donation will be welcomed. Volunteers will be trained in trauma counselling to assist her in this mammoth task she has taken upon herself.

Malalane’s residents are known for their open hearts and hands and NewsHorn herewith wants to make a plea to the local community to get involved in trying to better the lives of women and children who have suffered abuse or had been raped. Many children go through the same trauma from a young age and Amanda provides the necessary care, understanding and love to these broken kids, as well.

Once becoming involved with a victim, Amanda ensures that the correct medical procedures are followed, the victim is treated with dignity at a police station, a case is made and the perpetrator/s properly charged.

Any further information regarding the Victim Empowerment Programme which is part of the national SAPS structure with which Amanda is involved, can be obtained from her on 072 371 8993. Her email address is [email protected].

So vul vriendskap jou hart.

He has been known for his beautiful selection of clothing, footwear and handbags at very reason-able prices for many years and has become quite a fixture in Malalane.

This friendly shopkeeper and his staff of three women have been operational in Impala Street for many years, first for seven years on the one side of this busy street and now, since 2012, his new shop stands out among the other clothing shops across from his former premises.

Ousmane tells NewsHorn that he came to Malalane because “it used to be a place of little crime and was a peaceful town.” He and his

staff sadly acknowledges that it is not the case anymore and he bemoans the fact that because of the weak Rand, the price of his clothes had to be increased as he pays in Dollars and other currencies stronger than ours.

However, his products from the USA, Bangkok, Dubai and China are exquisite and there is always something different and special to find.

His aim is to ensure the client comes back and he will especially source a requested item. He is open from 7 am to 6 on Weekdays and on Satur-days, his smiling face is to be seen at the door of his shop, as well.

According to a recent study, South Africans are the second most stressed-out nation (After Afghanistan.) It has been said that the level of stress experienced in this country is comparable to that in a war zone.

Statistics SA recently published a report in conjunction with business group Bloomberg, showing how workplaces stress, burn-out and continual high anxiety levels negatively impact business in South Africa and ultimately the economy as a whole.

This prolonged everyday stress leads to many other health-related issues and workplace absenteeism costs the local economy almost R16 billion per annum.

All this has resulted in a national workforce plagued by mental issues such as depression and anxiety and a myriad of other mental and physical ailments.

In fact, after HIV, lung cancer and TB, medical costs for depression are now the highest ever funded by medical aids. Amid this, parliament has now announced that government health facilities may be closed due to lack of proper funding.

NewsHorn spoke to Dr Claire Sanderson, a life coach from Gauteng, who has provided the following steps to better mental health.

Get good nutrition. “You are what you eat,” she says.

“Understand the food groups and how to combine them properly. Your body and mind are closely linked.”

Exercise regularly. Exercise keeps the body limber, but it also helps to promote well-being and reduce stress. It doesn’t mean joining an expensive gym, either—a brisk

SA workforce stress costs billions per year

No link between suicide of miner and Lily Mine cave-in disaster

30-minute walk five times a week will get the blood flowing and clear the mind, especially if done in the company of a family member or friend.

Get enough sleep. The more stressed we are, the more sleep we need—and don’t get. “Stress and the always-on digital lifestyle over stimulate us, making it hard to sleep, but seven or eight hours unbroken is absolutely necessary,” says Sanderson.

A safety officer contracted to Vantage Goldfields, owners of Lily Mine, has allegedly committed suicide on Monday, 15 February.

The Cluster Communications Officer at Tonga police station, Lieut. Mzwandile Nyambi, told NewsHorn that Nico Cronjé (62) shot himself with a hunting rifle.

According to the official docket, neighbours of Cronjé saw blood seeping under his front door, early on Monday morning and alerted the police.

Cronje was dressed in his official working clothes. Information received from the manager of Human Resources (HR) at Vantage Goldfields, Corrie Hullett, is that the late Nico Cronjé was contracted by them to work as a shift boss, who is also responsible for safety.

Cronjé was a full-time employee of the Amereni mining agency and not Vantage Goldfields.

The HR manager of Amereni, Wessel Victor, said this suicide is a big blow to

them and that Cronjé will be missed. He also said he is very disappointed

that certain media houses created a link between the cave-in on 5 February and Cronjé’s suicide.

“I am so disappointed that they saw a link where there really is nothing.”

Vantage Goldfields spokesperson Coetzee Zietsman, confirmed that the

safety officer’s suicide was coincidental to the Lily Mine disaster.

“Nico Cronje’s suicide on Monday has no connection to the Lily Mine collapse.”

He added that Cronje had just returned from leave and would have started at Barbrook mine, also owned by Vantage

Goldfields, on that fatal Monday morning.“Our heartfelt condolences

go out to his family and friends during this difficult time.”Funeral arrangements are underway.

Cronjé will be laid to rest in his home town, Randfontein, during this week.

He was divorced and leaves behind two teenage children.

Cronjé was a

full-time em-

ployee of the Amereni mining agency and not Vantage

Take “me time”. Low self-esteem and job insecurity can lead to people take on too much at work or home.

It’s important to set some time aside to do things that you enjoy, just to be quiet and connect with yourself.

A marketing exercise by Reuters indicates that more than half (53%) of the South African working population does not take their annual leave.

Talk about it, and ask for help if necessary. If you do feel you are not coping, talk about how you are feeling to a trusted friend, colleague or family member. Remember that employers and medical aids are very aware of the rising problem of especially depression and will have programmes to assist.

Three recent suicides in Nkomazi have once again put the focus on the depth of despair people who take their own lives, sink to. Just before Christmas 2015, a well-known businessman and resident of Malalane, George Heunis, took his own life when he shot himself with his own firearm in his rented home just outside town.

More recently, 64-yr old Michiel Alden Botha of Hectorspruit also died at his own hand after taking an overdose of pills. Botha was apparently in the throes of divorcing his wife which may have contributed to his suicide.

And sadly, as NewsHorn is being prepared for print, yet another father has taken his life. Although it has nothing to do with the disaster at Lily Mine and is purely because of personal reasons and health problems, Nico Cronje shot himself last week.

He was a security officer from a private company who had been contracted to the mine.

Professor George Kloppenhaufer, a renowned international psychiatrist with a practice in Cape Town, told NewsHorn that because of the poor economy, job insecurity and the crime situation in South Africa, many people, especially white males, feel that life is simply not worth living.

He also agreed with the findings of the Bloomberg study that South Africans are under severe stress and in shockingly many cases, unable to cope with it.

A picture tells a thousand words February in picsWith the second month of the New Year

almost gone as well, NewsHorn decided to share a collage of images, which by itself, gives life to the tears shed, the disasters survived and the tough period already experienced at the beginning of 2016.

The Lily Mine disaster will go down in history for various reasons, the gratitude of the families and friends who had their loved ones returned safely, the grit and determination of the rescue parties, the heartache of the families who may never know the last moments of their loved one’s demise and for the unfair treatment of the media who was not allowed onto the premises and had to report from outside the gates. And behind the scenes, the community responded and lent a helping hand in any which way it could. One of the female workers, who were still missing at time of going to print, is the mother of a 6-week old infant. Thank you to Ruan from Pick ‘n Pay who stepped in to donate food and diapers, to Lex from SPAR and the many others who gave unselfishly and no one

knows about. We can only publicly thank those whom we know about. This is what makes the Onderberg special – the open hearts of its people.

The face of Waterval-Boven has been changed forever and history has gone up

in smoke when angry protestors burnt down the magnificent historical municipal buildings, built with 18th century Italian stone slabs. It housed all the municipal records, the library and clinic as well. It will cost R16 million to replace it with modern buildings. While the appropriate minister makes noises about stepping up to the plate to maintain the image of this town for tourism purposes, NewsHorn is of the opinion that it may just be too little, too late. Closer to home, in Malalane, the old Rotunda is also making way for a second mosque for the town. The lovely old trees were chopped off and across the library is now just Ground Zero.

Despite R33 000 paid to a lawyer in Nelspruit to defend the alleged rapists and killers of a 3-year old girl, the money has gone missing and the tax payers are now forking out the Legal Aid fees to see these men deserve justice, which was denied a young life, snuffed out too soon at the hands of monsters. The attorney who has been tasked by Legal Aid to represent the men, have been mobbed and attacked, despite the

case being moved from Tonga to Nelspruit. NewsHorn will report on this matter in due course as it has already established the name of the defaulting lawyer.

As someone so aptly said …”it is only February.”

Contraband cigarettes worth more than R1 million were recently confiscated in Nkomazi.

The face of the Malalane Rotunda has changed forever.

Historic buildings were burnt down by angry pro-testers in Waterval-Boven, resulting in R16m loss of history.

The story of a mine disaster is eerily depicted in this photo.

Protests at Home Affairs in Komatipoort.

Much needed water for the drought-stricken farmers in the Free State went up in smoke.

In response to numerous queries from the youth in Mpumalanga, the organisers of the youth entrepreneurship empowerment programme have extended the closing date to 25 February.

Government has announced that the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) is ready to conduct free and fair local government elections later this year.

“The Portfolio Committee on Home Affairs welcomes progress made so far in preparation for the 2016 local government elections. The Committee is of the view that all necessary systems are being put in place to ensure that the IEC continues its proud tradition of managing and delivering free and fair elections.

Furthermore, the Committee welcomes the finalisation of a network of voting district boundaries impacted by the Local Government Elections 2016 ward boundaries.

The commitment by the IEC to a continuous and open communication with registered parties as well as stakeholders is seen

in a positive light to ensure the legitimacy of the elections.

Despite this, the Committee voiced its concern

about the large number of possible voters not appearing on the voters roll.

All South Africans, especially the 5.71 million potential voters between the ages of 18-39 who qualify to vote, is

urged to register to ensure that they actively participate in this

democratic process. The IEC has set the 5th and 6th March 2016 for

registration weekend. The date and month for the elections

have not been announced and the IEC has promised to do this in due course.

said Simphiwe Mntambo, Enterprise Development Specialist responsible for Youth Business at SAB.

The programme will be open to young people between the ages of 18 and 35 with innovative businesses operational for two years or less in the following sectors: tourism, manufacturing, agriculture (mainly agro-processing) and unique services, the organisers said. Following the application process, 50 young entrepreneurs from each district will be invited to a two day business training boot camp geared to enable them to

grow and build sustainable businesses. This programme is an output of the SAB-

Mpumalanga partnership that is linked to three areas of cooperation – enterprise, eural and human capital development.

Application forms are available on the Mpumalanga Youth Portal at (www.mpyouthbiz.co.za), MYEP website (www.myep.co.za), Department of Economic Development and Tourism website (www.mpumalanga.gov.za/dedt), as well as the municipal offices in the three districts until the closing date of 25 February 2016.

Laerskool eerste netbal-span gaan toer

was.

Dat mens so ver sal ry vir water, is seker begryplik as dit so min reën, veral in Komatipoort.

Suikerland High School in Malalane hosted its school’s athletic meeting recently. Learners enjoyed the very hot day and despite the heat, ran out their hearts while cheered on by their fellow school friends. The day was a major success and everybody was in accord that it had all been worth it!

Panorama Interlaer atletiek by Laerskool Malalane
