PRE-ACTIVITY (5 minutes)• Write brain drain and busman’s holiday on the board.

• Tell Ss you are going to give them two sentences using each

word. They must choose which sentence they think is correct.

• Read out sentences using brain drain:A You get a brain drain when you work so hard that your

brain feels tired.

B A brain drain is when all the professionals of a country

leave to work in a different country, for more money, etc.

• Ask Ss to vote on the correct definition (B) and repeat for

busman’s holiday:A This is when you do the same thing on holiday that you

do in your job.

B This is a day when employees work at home and don’ttravel to work.

• The correct definition is A.

PROCEDURE (30 minutes)• Explain to Ss that they are going to look up and write

sentences for a series of words and phrases. They don’t have

to write dictionary-style definitions, just sentences that

illustrate the meaning of the words.

• Divide the class into competing teams. You could have two

or three teams. Give one card to each team: A, B, or C.

• Tell each team they have ten minutes to look up the true

definitions for the words on their card. They can look up the

definitions in the Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary orThe Little Book of Work. Then they must write a true and a

false sentence for each word. Tell them the false sentence

should not be too obvious or the other teams will guess thetrue one too easily. Go round and make sure teams are not

falling behind. If possible it might be best to move the

different groups to different rooms.

• Stop after ten minutes and explain to Ss they are now going

to play a game. Tell team A to write down the first word on a

piece of paper and read the two possible sentences to the

other team(s). The other teams must choose the correctsentence. If the other team chooses the correct sentence they

will win one point. If playing with three teams, allow both of

the other teams to guess the correct sentence before revealingthe answer.

• The winner is the team with the most points.

EXTENSION• Ask each team to write a paragraph including the five

words / phrases on their worksheet.

• Tell team A to read out their paragraph, substituting the

word ‘beep’ for the five words. Explain that team B has to

remember the words from the worksheet and write them

down as they listen to the story. Repeat for the other team.
