I FUCKING HATE GOLDFRAPPGoldfrapp will release their sixth album Tales of Us on Fri 06 Sep. The album has been two years in the making and is said to be their most narrative, cinematic and intimate recording so far.

All the songs bar one are named in the first person with a cast list of evocative character sketches, the contrary love affairs, the suspense, hallucinations, fairy tales and modern folklores documented and the traces of redemption they find in song take the poetry of Goldfrapps delicately considered music somewhere brand new.

PROJECT LOONGoogle launched giant balloons over the south Island, carrying computer equipment that can create a high-speed Internet infrastructure. Codenamed project loon, the helium filled balloons carry antennae, computers, batteries and navigational equipment, collecting power from solar panels that dangle below. Each can provide Internet coverage over an area of 1200 square kilometres. The project intends to help remote areas across the world access Internet coverage. It could stretch Internet coverage over remote parts of the world - and also be deployed to keep Internet going during a natural disaster. This is partly why Google chose Christchurch to launch the initiative, in tribute to the citys struggle in the wake of the 2010 and 2011 quakes.

BEAM OF LIGHTBeam Inc. announced the return of bartender competition Beam Bar Legend. • September 2013 will see Fly My Pretties embark on 20 intimate shows across New Zealand on the Homeland Tour. 20 shows across 17 regions in New Zealand this September. Assembling a brand new cast of talent and a new book of songs reminiscent of the acoustic styles of their early releases; the mammoth tour will introduce the collectives iconic high production show and cast of burgeoning kiwi talent to heartland New Zealand for the first time. This tour is going to be off the hook, says Barnaby Weir. Finally we get to take the Fly My Pretties experience to places its never been seen before; I know its going to be one hell of a musical excursion. In keeping with Fly My Pretties tradition, all 20 shows of the Homeland Tour will be filmed and recorded live this time for their 5th full-length release.

What is a rave might you ask? Well, it involves a lot of hands in the air, waving them around like you just dont care. Depending on your attitude, maybe a bit of fluoro, some glowsticks and whistles. At Black Salt Bar, it means four hours of nonstop beats and a light show featuring DJ Bobo and guests.

Theyve been at the forefront of the neo-psychedelic movement known for their monumental live sets with hypnotising projections. A New York Times live review said The Black Angels play psychedelic rock as if the 1960s never ended, and they are absolute masters of it.

Matt Langley and Lindon Puffin celebrate the release of Matts second album Virginia Avenue, following his 2010 debut release Featherbones. One of the songs won an APRA award which is kind of a big deal so you know hes a top performer. Supported by good friend and acclaimed singer/songwriter Lindon Puffin.

This past year has seen BBQ travel around the globe from Runion Island off the coast of Madagascar to Carnegie Hall. Along the way smashing shows on the Hudson River and all over the USA and Europe not to mention scaling volcanoes and even head butting some marine life. Oh, and made a bit of music too.

Japans instrumental legend Mono will wow New Zealand audiences this week when they bring their For My Parents tour to our stages. They are an instrumental rock band whose melodies have grown increasingly lyrical, with increasingly transcendent execution.

We cant get enough, cant get enough no. And neither can you New Zealand. The super group Supergroove is back with an infectious energy and bounding strides, crazy Scorpio Girls and more. Theyve been going strong for how many years, but it doesnt matter they play like a rock band thats just started out.

Hailing from Auckland, State of Mind is the duo of Stu Maxwell and Patrick Hawkins. Beginning their careers in 2004 SOM have become notoriously prolific producers with releases on a broad spectrum of labels throughout the drum n bass scene. This year has seen some new tunes and all new energy for some ragers.

Come light up the longest night (winter solstice) with Newtown Rocksteady. Three sets and lots of special guests! The longest show... the lowest limbo... the brightest outfits... prizes for last one standing on the dancefloor. Tune in... turn on... rock out! From 8pm until into the wee hours of the morning.

Auckland-based three-piece alternative rock band Rackets are inspired by classic rock and grunge. Oscar and Vince were in the Randoms, Jeremy is from God Bows to Math and BMX Rapists. Now they live together in a house in Ellerslie and all work together at a supermarket. Oh, and write music and practice like bandits.

  • Change can be a four-letter word to some, a chaotic scramble to create a new normal. Sigur Rs, only a year after releasing Valtari, return with their seventh serving Kveikur and seem to have run at it with guitars blazing, in an almost literal nod to the metallic.

The Icelandic post-rock orchestral and heart crushing ambient wonders, champions of Vonlenska (or Hopelandic, which is just as much gobbledygook as the Islenska vocalist Jnsi weaves it through) have spat in the face of what could have been a visit from the Coiste Bodhar on their nearly two decade career.

The departure of keyboardist/multi-instrumentalist Kjartan Sveinsson last year threatened to create an abomination, like an Arcade Fire without Rgine Chassagne or (just quietly) a Smashing Pumpkins without James Iha. The founding duo and percussionist Orri Pll Drason have picked up the pieces spectacularly, redefining Sigur Rs immensely. What they have delivered in Kveikur is a heavier, darker re-definition of a sound growingly celebrated for its orchestral beauty and atmospheric intensity.

Bassist Georg Holm described Kveikur as the anti-Valtari, a binary opposition that could be no further from the truth. Where Valtari championed the dreamy Kveikur expunges any sense of wonder to plunge into chaotic, scrambling perditionbeautifully, in the darkest misuse of that word possible. Its a resuscitation of their sound that for all of the sacrilegious

merit this conjures is their best album in many years, maybe even since the nineties. Note though, there is a feeble heedfulness in that statement for there is a level of perfection in all of their music.

Whats so great though? The seeming ease of their re-definition; the defiance for their back catalogue; the soul-sucking intensity carefully arranged with fervent musicianship; the comfort in the continuity and unfurling of Jnsis consummate instrumental falsetto. It all is, from lead single Brennisteinn pounding down expectation at the front of the record to piano-strong outro Var quietly haunting the rear. All throughout a menacing character articulates itself in songs like the ethereally lunar, mournful Isjaki to the title track so suffused with bass that feels like stab hands in a dungeon strobe party it outstrips any quaint memory of Sigur Rs past.

When lyrics are stripped of meaning and music is left to foreground itself in the purest form it exists something beautifully emotive happens and this band still empowers that.

    WrITTEN BY JUSTIN fOWLEr

Prepping for their 2013 album release, Ghost Wave is haunting your ears and stirring your soul. Ghosty started out in late 2010, struggling to make ends meet after their recording gear was stolen around Christmas. By 2012, they were releasing new material, kicking ass and working on their second album.

Dream-folk duo French for Rabbits have been quietly building a reputation for their sad yet brave songs. Since releasing their Tui nominated EP Claimed by the Sea in March 2012, they have gathered a dedicated fan-base around the globe with handwritten letters and home-assembled albums.

New Zealand psyche rock sloggers return to Chicks for a night of soused psychedelic blues. Brother Love was approached to release vinyl through New World of Sound Records, and released a single, King Acid and two albums: Every Garden Grows One and My Own Worst Enemy.

He never intended to be a performer let alone become a superstar but Richard Clayderman has sold more records than the likes of Bob Dylan and Lady Gaga. Today, his distinctive piano reinterpretations of familiar tunes from every era and genre are still heard in every corner of the world.

Hot on the heels of sold-out tours by Kendrick Lamar, Tyga and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis. A$AP Rockys will make his Kiwi debut. Released in January, his debut album, LongLiveA$AP, defies categorisation, standing out amongst the pack as the document of where rap and hip hop culture is headed.

  • Although it never shirks from showing how unfounded suspicions destroy lives, this excellent drama from Danish director Thomas Vinterberg (Festen) and writer Tobias Lindhom (A Hijacking) has a wonderfully sly sense of understatement about it. Theres no music, except to show the passing of time, no melon-smashing SFX when punches fly, and although events do spiral out of control, the method of recounting them never does.

Lucas (Mikkelsen) is a kindergarten helper loved by the children. One morning little Klara (Anika Wedderkop) gives him a card; later its a kiss. Then she tells his boss, I hate Lucas, he has a willie! Its an innocent comment, but the seeds are sown. The townsfolk believe the worst of Lucas, and so begins a forest fire of accusations and recriminations that threatens to burn everything down.

Although he is better known for playing larger-than-life villains (Le Chiffre in Bond, TVs Hannibal Lector), Mikkelsen gives a subtle, dignified performance. Young Wedderkop is just as good, a sad, confused little girl at the centre of a storm she doesnt understand. I forgot to look where I was going, all of a sudden I was here, she says when she meets Lucas outside the shops. Its a good metaphor for the unintended horrors of what happens next.

Like Lucass hunting buddies always egging each other on to jump into freezing lakes or play childish drinking games, the community functions with a frightening pack mentality. And once the pack turns on you, as Lucas discovers, theres no turning back.

As Robb Stark and his northern army continue the war against the Lannisters, Tyrion arrives in Kings Landing to counsel Joffrey and temper the young kings excesses.

This film tells the tale of young and charming Michael, who learns he has just a few months to live. Determined to have the time of his life, he borrows the money raised for his treatment and heads overseas. He is determined to be carefree and everything goes as planned until he meets Sylvie.

Every wondered what would happen if the celebrities were throwing one of their casual Saturday night parties and the end of the world hit? Well, heres a version of events as told through the eyes of the new frat pack Seth Rogan, James Franco, Jonah Hill and more. Lots of celeb cameos, in-jokes and laughs to be had.

Coming to our screens the same day as the US, Futurama enters its final 10th season with two back-to-back episodes. Devised by The Simpsons creator Matt Groening, not too much is known about the sci-fi comedys final season, except that the last episode will focus on the wedding of on/off lovers Fry and Leela.

  • SHIT WORTH EATING

New executive chef Paul Rumary has brought his years of international experience to create a seasonal mixture of Asian and world fusion-style sharing plates and rich full-flavoured mains that will cater to whatever size appetite youve brought with you. Like the beautiful antique decor around you, each combination is a work of art with ingredients such as duck confit, spare ribs, tandoori chicken, pan seared salmon, multiple dumpling options and more. To compliment it all, there is an international wine list of key selections from around the globe, and a cocktail list combining fresh ingredients with classic recipes that change weekly to provide you with a new experience every visit.

You cant really go wrong with a club near the Harbour, but combine this with the intimacy and lush environment that GoldFinch has made a name from, and its a win-win nightlife experience. Boasting quality cocktails, champagne and music, this lounge-by-day and club-by-night venue provides a seductive atmosphere, with the backdrop of the night ocean ever enforcing its soothing nature. Deep-sea blue couches compliment the rich brown decor, and the wall of speakers in particular give the space a retro flair and individualism that cant be beaten. A scramble of fairy lights and bulbs flicker in the entrance, inviting us into this very real fantasy.

    shit we went to

  • Before Seth rogan was a comedy god with the likes of Knocked Up, Zack and Miri Make a Porno and Paul, he was just another actor trying to make ends meet no doubt getting stoned at home, sitting on his couch and working on his manscaping, most likely with his buddy Jay Baruchel (who was equally as unknown as rogan).

together, the pair came up with a short film along with some help from rogans childhood buddy evan goldberg titled Jay and Seth vs. The Apocalypse. the two friends find themselves in a predicament and spend their time debating what to do after an unknown event wipes everyone off the face of the earth.

that was 2007. fast forward to 2013 and theyve brought in a few rein-forcements a whole host of famous friends to the party (literally) and taken the end of the world flick to a whole new level.

Best buddies Jay (Shes Out of My League Baruchel) and Seth (rogan) catch up at Seths La home after a long time apart. Keen for a casual night of man bonding over brews and buds, they wind up at James (franco)s swanky pad at a typical hollywood gathering. But something strange begins to happen and after an unknown force wipes out La, the remain-ing survivors (including Jonah hill, Craig robinson and Danny McBride) must stick it out to overcome this disaster despite the fact they each have beef with each other.

Celebrity culture, like it or not, is a big part of our culture. entertainment magazines, womans magazines, gossip sites they all feed our hunger to know whats going on in the lives of the rich and famous. This is The End is like our window into their world well, what we imagine it to be like.

although they are clearly playing fictionalised versions of themselves, there is an undertone of truth Seth is a loveable stoner, Jay really isnt as famous as everyone else (are you one of the five people that saw Shes Out of My League?) Jonah hill probably does like to be friends with everyone, and yes, James franco is somewhat of a pretentious, academic

twat. they know this, we know this, and thats what makes This is The End such a hit.

a knowledge of hollywoods frat pack (aforementioned cast) as well as the likes of Michael Cera, Christopher Mintz-Plasse and even emma Watson is not crucial, but adds to the enjoyment factor. the main cast spend their time referencing their own films and their varying degrees of success and since nearly all of the main cast have worked together at some point of another, schooling up on these flicks makes for a very funny watch.

for example, Jonah hills recent success with Moneyball (an oscar nomina-tion) gives fictionalised Jonah a sense of entitlement, while James decks his house with objet dart (a la his University degree) and harbours an intense friendship/admiration/man crush on Seth like their characters in Pineapple Express, hoping one day to make a sequel to the hit flick (which they at-tempt to do in post-apocalypse conditions).

But the best part is the film doesnt just rely on its famous cast parodying themselves to be humorous: there is a story too - albeit a ridiculous one. heaven, hell, retribution and at the very centre of it all, friendship. Ulti-mately, the story rests on Jay and Seth one has become a star, while the other hides away in Montreal, Canada, shying away from the La life.

Unlike some of their other comedies where there can be moments of awkward laughter and uncomfortable inappropriateness, This is The End is filled with genuine laughs from start to finish. the situation is ridiculous and escalates from bad to worse as their personalities come to a head and the supplies rapidly dwindle.

Loaded with celebrity cameos, unusual situations and in-jokes, the end of the world has never looked like so much fun. Its survival of the funniest though definitely not the fittest.

as a fan of both rugby and video games, theres part of me that is simply thrilled that a new rugby game exists. As far as Im concerned, Sidhe could put out the same game every year with updated team rosters and I would fork out a hundred bucks each time, no questions asked. That alone would pretty much keep me happy (and did for the most part under the reign of the EA Sports Rugby franchise...)

And thats pretty much what Rugby Challenge 2 delivers at least in terms of the 80 minutes on the field. Besides some tweaks and bug-fixes, the core gameplay is unchanged from 2011s Rugby Challenge. What has changed has done so for the better. Offloads have been toned down. Theres more nuance in the breakdown controls now I love being able to spot a losing battle and pull players back out into the defensive line. Effective lineout mauls offer good protection against the jumper holding and getting very easily swamped by defenders. The music is new, but very much in the vein of the original soundtrack. Additional French commentary comes as a welcome relief from the same Justin Marshall/Grant Nisbett banter all over again.

But the guts of the game have remained constant. Theres no big change in how the game handles and no graphical overhaul. Instead, resources appear to have been focused on the content of the various competitions. All the competitions are back from the previous title (although once again we have to put up with the previous seasons ITM Cup squads, since 2013s have not been confirmed yet), along with the French Pro D2 (second division) and, most importantly, the Lions tour and a revamped Career Mode.

When the whistle finally blows, the result is... somewhat unclear. I thoroughly enjoyed the first Rugby Challenge and I expect to get a lot of hours of play out of Rugby Challenge 2 as well. And, it is a step forward. More competitions, better career mode, fixes and improvements on and off the field. A year on and I would be stoked. It feels like Frances current test series against New Zealand: A little under-strength, but I still cant tear myself away.

  • ENCORE

When LUKe SteeLe and nick Littlemore blasted onto the scene in 2008 with Walking on a Dream, they brought with them a dreamy alternate reality complete with Star Wars-esque album covers and cosmic costume designs, slipping into the blissed-out, synth pop stream headed by MgMt. the debut album was applauded for its vision yet panned for its inconsistency. the singles were strange and catchy, the rest just missed the mark.

empire of the Sun reaped rewards for their efforts however, taking six arIa awards in their stride and wowing audiences on the summer festival circuit with their visually stunning live show. five years later and theyve finally returned with the follow up. Its been a stretch, and since then Littlemore has been flexing his music muscle in other projects, playing with fellow australian dance outfit Pnau and working on the musical score for Cirque de Soleil.

the australian duos sophomore effort - Ice on the Dune - treads similar territory to the debut, however the experimental summer shimmer is fleshed out and expanded, the duo this time opting for grander pastures and shinier plateaus. the result is a more focused collection of neon-blue pop formed in crystalline synth textures and lush, cosmic electronica.

the album kicks things off with instrumental opener Lux, a carousel ride complete with rolling snares and a thumping bass drum. the curtain raises, and we are thrust into the vast imagination of a dance outfit tripping on their own self-created spectacle.

an acoustic guitar on Dna paves the way for all of eotSs trademarks - big synths, layer upon layer of electronics, falsetto vocals, a bombast call to arms sing-along. Dream time, its a special place/Lets keep each other awake...our hearts/now they beat the same sings Luke Steele, positioning himself as the magician of his own musical universe.

Lead single alive follows similar suit and builds upon the revamped glacial aesthetic, while awakening features a throbbing bass that

french artist Kavinsky would be proud of. elsewhere, the soft lullaby Ill Be around sees Steele in honest form (you can bet on your life/Ill be around for a while), and old flavours sounds like it took lessons from Justice on orchestral instrumentation; a colossal banger surely to be a highlight in concert.

of course, empire of the Sun are not purely about the music. the visual aspect of the duo engrained by their dress, otherworldly music videos, and musical personas (Steele as the emperor and Littlemore as the Prophet) spreads into their sonic palette, and at times blurs the line between balls-out concept record, over-inflated egoism and pure adventurism. Sure, they are a team that dabbles in visual grandiose through their high definition synth pop, but what begins with a bang unfortunately withers into stale repetition.

the album rides semi-high through to old flavours and falls from grace with the remaining tunes. What follows acts as a re-run of the what came before - the same formula, the same tricks. that is, until album closer Keep a Watch decides to channel a b-grade David Bowie in some anti-climactic nonsense.

Music for us is about articulating the feelings you cant put into words, Littleton says speaking about the album, the same way different languages dont fully translate, music can bridge that gap emotionally. We want to make music that is transcendental.

When empire of the Sun are consistent, and funnel their talents into something both odd and current, they make damn fine pop with a glam-edge to it.
