27 August – 20 September 2015www.artsfestival.co.nz

Welcome to Christchurch Arts Festival 2015

Christchurch Arts Festival is a much anticipated event and this year it promises to be as fantasticas ever.

The Festival has a wealth of entertainment on off er, with a wide range of exciting international shows alongside some really special home-grown stories of our own. The Festival also embraces the whole city, giving all the community the chance to engage. The Schools Programme is an aspect that may not be as visible as the more prominent headline acts but it’s an incredibly fun and rewarding experience for the more than 9000 children who have the chance to be involved.

I would like to thank the organisers and artists for the hard work they have put in to bring the Festival to us and I encourage festival-goers to take every opportunity to enjoy the rich variety of performances and exhibitions on off er.

If you have travelled from out of town to attend the Festival, welcome to our city and I hope you enjoy this special Christchurch experience.

Lianne DalzielMayor of ChristchurchHonorary FestivalPatron

Cities will always change, rebuild, reinvent and reinterpret themselves. But while most cities take decades, even centuries to move through this process, Christchurch has been forced to undergo this in just a few years. And now, even without the ground moving, it remains a shifting city. The physical, emotional and cultural landscape continues to transform all around us.

This can be disorienting and discomforting, but it is fertile ground for artists. And the whole world knows it – last year The New York Times rated Christchurch one of the world’s top places to visit, emphasising that a rebirth was happening “with creativity and wit”.

For the 2015 Christchurch Arts Festival, we celebrate and embrace the city’s new energy and profi le, featuring many artists who call Christchurch their hometown. We also present a wide range of artists from around the world, all of whom come determined to be a part of this unique artistic environment.

We are very pleased to invite you back to the centre of the city as we return to some of our most beloved venues including The Arts Centre and the Isaac Theatre Royal. For four weeks in early spring the central city will be a hub of creative light, warmth and energy.

We thank all of the superb artists who have agreed to share their work with us – we are continuously amazed at the power of your vision and your skills.

Thanks also to all our many funders, sponsors and supporters who allow us to fulfi l our ambitions to bring the very best artists to Christchurch.

Dive into the programme, mark your favourites and don’t forget to try something new. We look forward to meeting you over our four fantastic weeks.

The Daisy Theatre is internationally acclaimed puppeteer Ronnie Burkett unleashed... unscripted, by the seat of

his pants, manipulating and voicing his characters through variety acts, impromptu monologues, musical

numbers and audience participation, featuring a cast of 40 marionette characters.

Audiences and critics alike fall in love with the ridiculous, tender, outrageous antics of Daisy Theatre characters Esme Massengill, Mrs. Edna Rural and beloved fairy child Schnitzel. Variety numbers parody theatrical

genres from opera, music hall, Las Vegas, French cabaret and vaudeville with characters including lounge singer

Rosemary Focaccia, marionette ventriloquist Meyer Lemon, chanteuse Jolie Jolie,

and “Canada’s oldest and worst actress” Miss Lillian Lunkhead.

With the ever-changing content and nightly improv, each performance will be different,

daring and on the edge.

in-your-face feminist firebrand raising hell.

And when you’re raising hell you need hell-raising music, so expect a live band and some of NZ’s best singers

A Simple Space

A dizzying collection of works in new circus; this performance is simultaneously raw, frantic and delicate. A Simple Space evokes real

and visceral responses in audiences.

Instead of fi ne-tuning the performance with makeup, lighting and contrived theatrical overlay, the cast have deliberately gone the

opposite way. The audience is brought in close around the stripped back stage where seven acrobats are pushed to their physical limits, breaking

down their usual guards and introducing the reality of failure and weakness. A truly unique audience experience not to be missed.

FESTIVAL DIRECTOR’S NOTE“You simply can’t resist being drawn into their extraordinary world of physical one-upmanship where each performer tries

(and succeeds) to out-perform the previous performer.”

Christchurch’s own Mark Hadlow stars as that most polarising of species – a middle aged man

in lycra. Bryan Cook is a property developer who has accumulated a small fortune building leaky homes. He’s stressed out, self-medicating and self-loathing, killing himself to increase his bank balance while

decreasing his golf score.

When things fall apart he joins a men’s cycling group to relieve stress – and makes a few startling

discoveries in various cracks and crevices. Poignant and achingly funny, MAMIL presents

In the fens of Eastern England they used to trap ducks in netting tunnels.

The mouth of a tunnel would be wide and tall and ducks would swim happily into it feeling no sense of threat. But as the

tunnel went on it turned round corners and  became lower and narrower.

The ducks paddled on until they turned a final corner and found themselves in a little netted enclosure where a duck-

catcher sat patiently waiting.

In Trapped, written by Christchurch’s Joe Bennett, a barman, a butcher’s

daughter and a contortionist tell the stories of their lives. They do not know each other and the unique and random

details of what happened to each of them have only one thing in common.

The White GuitarTHE CONCH

NEW ZEALAND

Directed by Nina Nawalowalo and Jim Moriarty

Platinum-selling hip-hop artist Scribe features with his father John and brother Matthias in this true story

of Christchurch family, the Luafutus.

From a grandmother’s dream of a better life in New Zealand through the collision of that dream

with the reality of hardship and loss: a man’s journey from boyhood innocence into the heart of darkness – through violence, drug addiction, prison and gangs – to the possibility of hope, healing and inspiration.

Music pumps through the story’s veins, from the first songs of a grandmother sung to her white guitar

to the power of rock’n’roll, the beats of hip-hop and church hymns.

With the intensity of a live gig The White Guitar combines powerhouse performances, AV projection and stunning illusion.

This multi-sensory theatrical adaptation of Jean Giono’s environmental classic tells the inspiring story of a shepherd who plants a forest, acorn by acorn,

transforming a barren wasteland and shows us the difference one man (and his dog) can make to the world.

A combination of puppetry, storytelling, choreography, wind that really blows, rain that

gets you wet and French countryside scenes that smell like the French countryside.

Suitable for adults and children aged 7+.

Embodying themes of heroism, humanity and nature, the music of the Romantic movement

(18th and 19th centuries) is art for the soul.

The CSO concert Romantics features three masterpieces of this era: Beethoven’s

Egmont Overture, inspired by Dutch nobleman Count Egmont’s heroic martyrdom opposing the

Spanish Inquisition; Mendelssohn’s hugely popular Concerto for Violin, and Dvorák’s

cheerfully Bohemian Symphony No. 8.

Soloist for Mendelssohn’s lyrical masterpiece is Australian violinist Kristian Winther in his debut

Jesse Bering argues that we are all sexual deviants on one level or another. He challenges us to move beyond our attitudes towards ‘deviant’ sex and consider the alternative: what would happen if we rise above our fears and revulsions and accept our true natures?

Jesse Bering’s writing has appeared in New York magazine, Slate, Scientific American, The Guardian, and The New Republic, and he has featured on numerous documentaries, TV shows, and radio programmes as an expert science communicator. He is currently an Associate Professor of Science Communication at the University of Otago.

Patricia Grace and Paula Morris in conversation

In her first novel in a decade, treasured writer Patricia Grace explores issues that permeate New Zealand history and society: racial intolerance, cross-cultural conflicts and the universal desire to belong.

Spanning several decades and set against the backdrop of a changing New Zealand, Chappy is a story of enduring love. She discusses her work with Paula Morris, whose On Coming Home explores similar themes of nostalgia, memory and belonging.

IMAGINARY CITIESNEW ZEALAND

Fiona Farrell, Anna Smaill, Hugh Nicholson, Hamish Clayton Chaired by Lara Strongman

Taking the Christchurch blueprint as a starting point, the panel looks at ways we imagine cities; either in fiction, in history, or in contemporary life, whether as utopias or dystopias … cities imagined or reimagined.

Fiona Farrell’s new non-fiction book Villa at the Edge of Empire addresses fundamental questions proposed by any map: Where am I? How did we get here? Where do we go now? Anna Smaill’s The Chimes is set in the musical dystopia of an alternative London; Hamish Clayton’s The Pale North features a post-quake reimagined Wellington, and Hugh Nicholson is principal adviser urban design at the Christchurch City Council.

Chaired by Lara Strongman, Senior Curator at the Christchurch Art Gallery.

THE STRUGGLE FOR SOVEREIGNTYNEW ZEALAND

Margaret Wilson

In the era of public choice and free markets, and when widespread public protest against global treaties such as the Trans Pacific Partnership Agreement is having little effect, does the New Zealand state still have the best interests of its individual citizens at heart?

University of Waikato Law and Public Policy Professor, and former New Zealand Parliament Speaker of the House Margaret Wilson argues that the shift to a neo-liberal public policy framework has profoundly affected the country’s sovereignty and that New Zealanders must continue to engage in the struggle to retain it for the sake of individual and community wellbeing.

ON NORTH KOREA: INVENTING THE TRUTHKOREA / USA

Suki Kim Chaired by Paula Morris

A glimpse inside the mysterious closed-off world of North Korea, a country where a military dictatorship exploits the myth of a Great Leader to its own citizens, who are “imprisoned in a gulag posing as a nation”.

Suki Kim’s extraordinary memoir of her time teaching English to the sons of North Korea’s ruling class, Without You, There is No Us, was written at great personal risk. Suki Kim has been travelling to North Korea as a journalist since 2002. Her work has appeared in The New York Times, Harper’s  and the New York Review of Books.

ON EFFECTIVE ALTRUISMAUSTRALIA / USA

Peter Singer Chaired by Eric Crampton

How can we do the most good? Peter Singer, often described as the world’s most influential living philosopher, presents a challenging new movement in the search for an ethical life. Effective altruism requires a rigorously unsentimental view of charitable giving, urging that a substantial proportion of our money or time should be donated to the organisations that will do the most good with those resources, rather than to those that tug the heartstrings.

Peter Singer is the author of more than 20 books, including the groundbreaking work on ethics, Animal Liberation and his latest, The Most Good You Can Do.

CRIMES OF PASSIONUNITED KINGDOM

Sarah Waters

Sarah Waters’ hugely inventive novels usually have lesbian relationships at their heart, and are always set in the past, when remaining true to oneself came at great personal risk. Her latest book, The Paying Guests, is no exception. It chronicles the awakening of a passion in 1920s London that leads to terrible consequences, and asks: how far would we go for a love that is forbidden by society but nonetheless achingly real?

Sarah Waters is the award-winning, bestselling author of five previous novels including Fingersmith and The Little Stranger.

StillAn interactive memorial, Still  explores the duality

of war: the destruction of lives and the construction

of a collective future. Presented simultaneously

in Auckland, Christchurch and Poitiers in France,

Still commemorates the First World War with an

opportunity to connect with people from countries

involved in the war, 100 years ago.

In front of an interactive screen,

the audience has a choice.

If they are still and meditative, they can listen to

music from the time of the First World War and

watch as their face is added to a collage of other

observers alongside archive images of people

photographed at the time of WWI; growing a

family tree of faces, cultures and connections from

around the world.

If the audience moves, the memorial presents a

collection of dark geometrical shapes, while noise

disrupts the musical tunes and will provide a more

aggressive sound environment.

The contrast of these two interactions showcases

the dual nature of war: Still is either silent and

intimate, or dark, anonymous and violent.

This stunning new sculptural installation by well-known

Rama Tuna highlights the cultural signifi cance, and sense of

Everyone and everything has a beginning and in Ka Tai O Kurawaka the place of creation begins with the people of the land and their own interpretations.

Performed in Te Reo, the story explores the myriad of relationships that inspire people to recall events and experiences and share these with others. This open-process performance encourages the audience to feed into the development of a new work.

The Mauricio Kagel ProjectFREE THEATRECHRISTCHURCH

Inspired by the avant garde music-as-performance work of Argentine-German composer Mauricio Kagel, this exciting new Free Theatre project is sure to entertain and surprise. Kagel almost invented and most certainly redefi ned the whole music-theatre genre with his use of comedy, absurdism and music. The Maurico Kagel Project brings together international composer Gao Ping, renowned New Zealand conductor Hamish McKeich and Christchurch experimental performance artists. Directed by Peter Falkenberg

UBU Night: The Beat Generation Join Free Theatre’s cast of The Maurico Kagel Project for an Ubu Night exploring  the counter-cultural world of The Beat Generation; inhabiting the words, music and performances of hipsters including Kerouac, Ginsberg, Burroughs, Cassidy, Kyger and Vollmer. As they weave their yarns and burn for the ancient heavenly connection to the starry dynamo, a hip concoction of Jazz and Moroccan cuisine will be on off er.
