A weekend of art and artists, up close and personal

by Derrick WilliamsTHISWEEK NEWSPAPERS

This year, Lakeville’s annual art festival is going to be all natural – both in terms of the projects and the thought process. “We’re going green,” fes-tival director Shelly Carney said. “Our theme this year is ‘Art Naturally.’ “Not only are all our projects being made with recycled materials, but it’s also important to remind people, with art, it’s a nat-ural thought process and people should naturally think about art every day.” With attendance growing each year, Carney said, this year’s Lakeville Art Festival is poised to be among the biggest ever. “We like the fact that we’re becoming this premier art boutique and festival south of the river,” she said. This year’s art festival – the eighth annual event – is Sept. 18 and 19 on the lawn of the Lakeville Area Arts Center. Carney said the festival will feature 65 artists, and include a juried art show, art demos, author readings, live entertainment and chil-dren’s art activities through-out the weekend. “It’s a high-quality art

festival. You can really spend a day and really find something for everybody,” Carney said.

Something for artists For artists, it’s a great way to meet people, get name recognition and, of course, sell art. “It’s exciting going to

shows like this,” said Devon Driscoll, a 33-year-old jew-elry maker from Minne-apolis. “There’s something gratifying about putting yourself out there and hear-ing people say they like your work. For me, there’s noth-ing better.” Driscoll, who has only been making jewelry for

four years, won last year’s Best in Show award at the festival. As a result, she’s this year’s featured artist. She described her jewelry as a “bit bizarre,” but loves making it. “I like making wearable pieces of art,” she said. Some of her pieces in-clude bones and castings of

bones. “It’s more of a collector base than something you’d see in, say, Macy’s,” Driscoll joked. Driscoll grew up in the western Wisconsin town of New Richmond. After high school, she took a trip to New York City to visit a friend and never came home. “I had a friend drive a U-Haul with my stuff out there,” she said. “I simply loved it.” Driscoll studied interior architecture and even in-terned with firms, but she said she couldn’t hack the corporate life. “In my free time I started making jewelry,” Driscoll said. “I discovered I fell out of love with not making things with my hands. So I went to jewelry school.” Just a couple of years ago she moved home to be closer to her family, she said. It was when she came home that she discovered the Lakeville Art Festival. “It turned out to be a re-ally great show,” she said.

Art for everyone Carney said the festi-val has a great reputation among artists and festival-

goers alike. For the artists in at-tendance, the festival is a way to share their art with fellow artists and visitors, and also to win awards. The two-day juried show chooses first-, second- and third-place Best in Show winners, as well as a Best in Show award for emerg-ing artists, Carney said. “And the community has a chance to get to know the artists,” Carney said. “They can ask them, ‘How long did it take to make this?’ or ‘How long have you been an artist?’ It’s a place to develop a relationship and the artists love that, too.” It’s also a place to be hands-on. Each year, there is a community art project where festival-goers con-tribute to a project that is displayed at the Lakeville Area Arts Center. Last year’s project, an 8-by-12-foot brushwork mural, stands sentry on the east-facing wall near the center’s side entrance. This year’s project, Car-ney said, will be the cre-ation of mobiles made of recycled materials to be displayed inside the Arts Center.

“The project is some-thing the community really enjoys,” Carney said. The festival also fea-tures a Literary Corner – a place where authors will offer readings and book signings. Also at the festival is the children’s art tent, “Young at Art,” in which children can create bookmarks, paint garden stones and mold clay figures.

The weekend will also include plenty of food and live entertainment. Carney said the festival is turning into an all-day destination for families. “We have people com-ing from the region, not just the area communities,” Carney said. “And they’re able to do something that isn’t going to cost them anything, but can walk away thinking, ‘I’ve done

something good for myself and my family today.’ ”

For sale, of course All the art on display at the festival is for sale. Types of art include jewel-ry, sculpture, photography, painting, ceramics, glass and mixed media. Prices range from a few dollars to several thousand. “And the artists love to talk about and show off

their art,” Carney said. For artists like Driscoll, festivals are more than a place to show art. “It’s a way of life. It’s my living,” she said. “I love making jewelry and I like the lifestyle. I like to travel and be my own boss and working art shows and festivals allows me to do that.” Driscoll said she’ll go anywhere for a good show,

and generally does, travel-ing the country as routine for her work. She also does custom jewelry, but said festivals and shows are her liveli-hood. “It’s about being happy and I’m able to be success-ful doing something I love,” Driscoll said. The Lakeville Art Fes-tival will be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday,

Sept. 18, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 19. The Lakeville Area Arts Center is at the corner of Holyoke Avenue and 210th Street. For more information log on to www.lakevilleartfesti-val.org. For more of Driscoll’s work, visit www.devon-driscoll.com.
