Man takenhostageafter usingATM in townMR Maseko (63) fell victim to robbers after using an ATM in Voortrekker Street, Lydenburg. “When I walked away from the ATM a man threw white paint on my pants,” the gardener from Mashishing said. Maseko walked about two blocks down Voortrekker Street and found a few men waiting for him outside Home Affairs. They demanded the money he withdrew. The criminals saw the white paint on him and knew he was marked as a potential victim. “I told them I did not have money but they said I lied... they saw me withdraw it. I explained to them that there wasn’t any money in my account.”They forced Maseko to get into their car. The criminals drove towards the Lydenburg Dumping site and parked under the trees at the side of the Lydenburg Golf Club just after the bridge. They searched him while Maseko pled for his life. They took out knives and guns because they did not believe he was without cash.The robbers fled and left Mr Maseko in the long grass. He then walked back to town. This has apparently happened to a lot of people who draw money. The alleged criminals mark them with paint or a white powder and when they walk towards Mashishing the victims are confronted.

NOTHING could have prepared the audience of the Leadership Week for the enigmatic Dr David Molapo. He had everyone's attention and concentration within the first second of his presentation. He spearheaded the Mpumalanga Leadership week with sessions in Middelburg, Steelpoort, Lydenburg and Nelspruit. He also spoke at the Lydenburg High School with his wife Dr Mamiki Molapo. He has an incredible stage presence and uses his own personal life to mesmerise the audience with a message of hope. Dr Molapo was a former political activist and returned to South Africa at the request of late Pres. Nelson Mandela.Dr Molapo use life experience, faith, business ventures, family life and

SEASONAL rain is usually measured from the beginning of the rain season to the end, on an annual basis. In Lydenburg we calculate the

rainfall from July to June each year. Currently the figures are as follows: Long term averages and current monthly figures:

We therefore have a shortfall of only 24.2 mm for the season on season average over 35 years, but indications are that with the El Nino phenomenon moving away we can expect more rain.The problem however lies in the pre season figures from January 2015 to June 2015 which are not shown here. Over this period last year 531 mm was measured, but from January to the current date in 2016, only 283.5 mm was measured. While the figures for March to June 2016 remain outstanding, they are traditionally low on average. The nett effect of early season rain is that it recharges underground sources which feed our fountains, rivers, dams and boreholes in time to last during winter and spring until the next rain season starts. This is not happening and we can therefore expect that these water sources will be charged at a much reduced level, which could spell trouble for the end of winter. Do not be fooled by the fact that the dam is full. It is fed by fountains that feed the Sterkspruit (I have personally checked these fountains for a number of years) and therefore our water source has an underground origin. Rainfall in the catchment mostly adds water as runoff and is not sustainable. A long term soak is required to charge underground resources. We also know

that the dam’s capacity is depleted due to silting and much higher use than ever before. In the past some spare capacity was held at the fisheries for the pump station, but all those dams are now empty due to MTPA management. Both the MTPA and TCM have lost their long term institutional memory and knowledge of the area’s water sources. We therefore urge all residents to use water sparingly and the TCM to deal with leaks and overflowing reservoirs quickly and efficiently in order to avoid future disaster. Andre Coetzee

PEOPLE are talking about a civil war. Indeed, if we are looking at the numbers of people being killed, both black and white, we are in a low level civil war. Throughout history, war has never had a good outcome. The defeated simply go underground and sabotages the winners. And the winners face sanctions and economic defeat and poverty if they kill their opposition. It simply does not work. It fuels hatred, back stabbing, racism and whatever evils you can think of.The real struggle is an economic one. Conspiracy theorists have long known about the so called “geldmag”.The problem is not rich people per se. It is socialism. Taking all the

money or land from the rich and distributing it among the billions of poor people will never work. There is not enough. Poor people will have money for two weeks and then? How will the land make money for them with no resources? The super rich of the world have all created companies or franchises that made them money. They employ millions of people who earn an income. Even if the income is small, it is better than nothing. If you want to become rich, create business. Not corruption or tenderpreneurs. That is not sustainable because it has been born through dishonesty, fraud and laziness. Modern prospering countries do not have trade unions, or strikes or free government handouts. They create business. They work hard for conservative wages and their lives improve as different businesses improve and grow. Work and effort creates money. A law that guarantees

minimum wage discourages entrepeneurs from employing people, because it cannot be afforded. It is simple economics 101.I am not advocating slavery. But if I want my car cleaned I want to negotiate a price for the labour and I will employ one to clean the car. However, if government says I must pay a guy R 200 for an hour’s work, I cannot afford it and the car can stay dirty. I am not discriminating. I am offering an hour’s work. If we can not negotiate a fair wage, then I lose, because my car remains dirty. And that is the crux of survival. We live in tough times. We need to get by with less, but we need to see more people employed, because that circulates money. There will always be a gap between rich and poor. No single country is different. It is a fact of life. The challenge is to land a job, even if it is low level. You have to be able to offer your labour at a fair price and the rich guys will employ you if it is affordable. If your methods chase the rich guys away they run with their money and skills. What then remains is an impoverished population with no prospects whatsover and an impoverished government who cannot support you any more. Is that the outcome we want? I don’t think so.
