tragedy occurred last week when two 14 year old school girls drowned. It is believed that they were crossing the ATubatse River in Burgersfort after school when the incident

occurred. Divers were looking for the girls this past weekend. The girls were swept away by the heavy current. The heavy rain that has continued to fall in provinces such as Limpopo, Gauteng, North West, and Mpumalanga brought with it flash floods and overflowing rivers and dams over the past few days.On Friday, the South African Weather Service warned of more rainfall in Limpopo. The province is one of the severely drought-stricken areas in the country.Emergency services and the SAPS diving unit worked tirelessly over the weekend and recovered one of the girls. Colonel Ronel Otto confirmed on Tuesday (by deadline) that one of the girls had been found. She was swept about 25km down river and found near the Steelpoort Bridge.

Towels and washcloths a huge boost for Estralita learners

FOR children in the Estralita School, Lydenburg, hostel a sense of identity is very important. On Thursday Bernina Lydenburg handed out 100 towel and washcloth sets for the children. Bernina machine embroidered every single washcloth and towel for the kids with their name on. A group of Bernina ladies that embroidered the items and Mrs Ria van der Westhuizen (who played a big part in the fruition of the project) came together to hand over the donation. Some of the towels were hand made with about 30m of towel fabric that was bought. “We started in March 2015 and wanted to donate the items earlier but it was a huge undertaking with obstacles along the way,” said Mrs Petro Botha, owner of Bernina Lydenburg. Korn Steel donated all the hooks to put up the items in their bedrooms for everything to stay neat. The children were very excited to put up the hooks and individualize their own sleeping area.Mrs. Hanlie Swanepoel, principal of Estralita, said that they have are very thankful and overjoyed with the success of this huge project. DIT is baie moeilik om vriendskap te definieer. Die HAT noem dit ’n verhouding. Maar dit is veel meer. Mense kan jou vriende wees omdat jy geld het en hulle gedurig trakteer. Of omdat jy met hulle besigheid doen. Of omdat hulle mekaar respekteer. Ons het ook die term “mooiweersvriende” in Afrikaans.Vriendskap is veel meer. Dit impliseer wedersydse respek. Dit impliseer iets baie persoonliks (verhouding). Daar is gedeelde humor en hartseer. Daar is meelewendheid en wedersydse hulpverlening. Iemand om ’n grappie mee te deel of op wie se

skouer jy kan huil. Daar is ’n emosionele aspek en daarom kan mense sonder emosie nooit ware vriendskap ervaar nie.Vriende deel belangstellings en afkeure. Hulle deel geheime en kan praat sonder om polities korrek of geveinsd te wees. Hulle gee nie voor wat hulle nie is nie. Hulle deel voorspoed en teëspoed. Hulle skinder vertroulik.Ek het dit weer hierdie naweek ervaar. Matilda en ek reel jaarliks die byeenkoms v a n o u d k o l l e g a s u i t d i e T PA Natuurbewaring se dae. Daar is nog honderde van hulle. Maar daar is ook baie ware vriende wat gemeë is deur harde werk en saam swaarkry, presteer en ervaar.Die eggenotes van natuurbewaarders het saam swaargekry. Soos ek, was baie drie

maande van die jaar met militêre aksies betrokke. Van die oorblywende nege maande in die jaar was ons ses maande nie by die huis nie en besig met veldwerk ver van die huis af. Ons was dus net ’n kwart van elke jaar “getroud” in die sin dat ons as gesin saam was. Dit was ’n smeltkroes wat baie huwelike nie oorleef het nie.Maar ons is daar deur. Soos die bykans 60 mense wat dié naweek by Laske Nakke saamgetrek het. Baie met vrou of man nommer twee of drie. Baie weduwees of enkel. Maar hoewel ons nou oud en kruppel is, is ons daar deur en het ons vriendskappe gehou. Eenkeer per jaar kom braai ons en kuier ons en vertel stories wat almal al uit die kop ken en twintig keer gehoor het en ons lag steeds daaroor.Ons dank ons Hemelse Vader dat hy dit so beskik. Ons dank almal (selfs vriende wat nie deel was van natuurbewaring nie), vir bydraes, hulp en goedgesingheid. Mag hierdie vriendskappe tot in ewigheid hou en vir altyd die ongeskrewe definisie van vriendskap weerspieël.

Spreuke 15:13: Blydskap laat ’n mens se gesig straal; smart maak ’n mens terneergedruk. Ons Vader, laat ons gedurig U goeie tyding en die blydskap najaag en ervaar - Amen.

Hierdie ou landjie het vir my weereens sy malkleure gewys hierdie afgelope paar dae. Dit het alles begin toe ek lees van die EFF wat die Gupta’s uit die land wil hê. Baantjies vir boeties is daar wel - maar kan ons darem regtig op ‘uit-die-land-dryf” aandring? Die saak het weereens die belastingbetaler se geld in die hooggeregshof gaan mors. Kan ons regtig in hierdie land rondloop deur mekaar te haat. Soveel dekades van haat het ons gebring waar ons vandag is. Dis nie politiek nie, dis die waarheid. Ai, sekere mense het seker niks beter om met hul tyd te doen op Facebook nie. Ek wil ook nou op die ‘wa’ klim of eerder die ‘seepkis”. Want daar is baie dinge waarvan ek ook nie hou nie. Dis ongelooflik dat die vlak van ve rva l a l hoe mee r s t yg . Hoorhierso, ek plaas gereeld iets van “Lydenburg by die blou berge” en die ikoniese dorp van ons. Hierdie naweek moes ek my kop in skaamte sak toe ons gaste kry en hulle sê hoe vuil is die dorp. Dis ook nie vir die inwoners lekker om tussen vullis te ry nie. Dis ook mal. Ek wens net ek kan alles hier skryf maar ag die tone sal blougetrap word en die ego’s sal kraak. Want almal ‘judge’ tog so graag.En toe het ek Maandagaand tot die beslissing gekom:“Elke haan kraai mos op sy eie mishoop.” Trap fyn, daar lê baie mis rond. ~ Michelle Boshoff

DIE oud personeel, hulle gades en families van die TPA Hoofdirektoraat Natuurbewaring wat van 1945 tot 1994 bestaan het, het vanjaar vir die 20ste keer reunie gehou. Dié jaarlikse byeenkoms het destyds aanvanklik net vir streeksnatuurbewaarders op Maleoskop begin, is vir baie jare op Loskop gehou, een jaar op Middelburg by Pienaardam en nou vir die tweede agtereenvolgende jaar op Lydenburg by die pragtige Laske Nakke oord se lapa. Ons het reeds vroeg al die navorsers en klerke en hulle families asook enkele spesiale uitgenooide gaste by die byeenkoms betrek, omdat ons een groot familie was wat die hele destydse Transvaal vol gewerk het. Mense het van so ver as Richardsbaai, Pretoria, Nylstroom, Tzaneen, Ermelo, Nelspruit, elders en Lydenburg gekom.

Deur goedesinde skenkings en bydraes kon die byna 60 mense ’n skaap en ’n vark spitbraai en het ons deur die genade pragtige weer geniet. Baie van die lede is reeds 60, 70 en 80 jaar oud, pensioenarisse en weduwees en het teen groot persoonlike koste die jaarlikse pelgrimstog aangepak.Groot stories is vertel en ’n hond uit ’n bos gekuier en geëet. Ons bedank graag Rudi en Gerda Hartzer en Vicky van Laske Nakke wat op verskeie maniere die projek bekostigbaar gemaak het en die skenkers van die diere en finansiële bydraes wat alles moontlik gemaak het en nie hulle name genoem wil hê nie. WESBANK, South Africa's leading vehicle financier, has forecast that total new vehicle sales will decline 12% this year. Compared to 2015's industry total sales of 617 691 vehicles, 2016 will end the year with total sales of 543 306 units. The forecast is an annual fixture on the South African motoring calendar, and forms part of the annual SAGMJ WesBank Car Of The Year banquet dinner. WesBank CEO Chris de Kock cited many of the current macroeconomic headwinds as reasons for the expected decline in sales this year.

WesBank's forecast is based on the anticipation of a low GDP growth rate, changes in the interest rate, inflation, a downgrade of South Africa's credit rating and the deterioration of the Rand

Over the next three years the interest rate is likely to be hiked 125 basis points, keeping inflation within target bands. However, WesBank does expect that South Africa's sovereign credit rating will be downgraded to “non-investment grade”, or “junk” status. Finally, the Rand will continue to decline against the US Dollar, with WesBank forecasting that in 2019 the American currency will sit at R17.20. “The movement of the Rand will be key for the new vehicle sales performance in South Africa. A deteriorating currency will force manufacturers to increase prices more aggressively. This will push new vehicle price inflation well outside that of headline CPI, thus sending more buyers to the used car market,” said de Kock. “Interest rates will also play an important role in affordability and the demand for credit, as has historically been the case.”

In line with seasonal trends in the market WesBank has staggered its forecast for 2016's vehicle sales performance. WesBank predicts that in the first half of 2016 industry sales will be down 10%, year-on-year, with passenger car and light commercial vehicle (LCV) sales declining 10% and the remainder of the commercial vehicle segment falling 12%.

The second half of 2016 will be tougher, mainly as a result of accelerated price increases for new cars as well as higher interest rates. Passenger car sales will likely decline 15.5%, year-on-year, with LCVs only down 10% for the same period. Sales of larger commercial vehicles will slide 14.4%, year-on-year, as businesses opt to not to replace existing assets with new models. Combined, the full year will see passenger car sales end down 12%; LCVs 10% lower than last year's performance; and commercial vehicles down 13.3%.

THE Ford Ranger and Kuga have retained their status as two of Car Magazine's Top 12 Best Buys for 2016, having been announced as winners in their respective categories at an industry awards dinner held in Melrose Arch, Johannesburg, recently.

The generous size of the Ranger's cabin, high specification level, refinement and ride comfort, as well as the rugged looks and performance were all praised by the Car editorial team. “Overall the Ranger has the widest spread of talents,” the judges commented.

The Ford Kuga once again topped the extremely competitive Compact SUV / Crossover category for the second year running. “The Kuga remains unbeatable,” according to Car. JEEP has shown seven concepts at this year’s Easter Safari. This annual event was started in 1967 by the Moab Chamber of Commerce in Utah as a one-day trail ride. However, as participation grew, the Safari expanded, and today it is a full 9-day event. No wonder Jeep and Mopar choose this even to showcase concept models and new parts.Of all the models, there were two that stood out for us, the Trailcat and the Comanche.Jeep TrailcatThis is a true off-road toy, and what Jeep refers to being “equally at home on rugged trails or a high-speed section”. Based on a Jeep Wrangler, one of the highlights of this concept is the fact that it is powered by the supercharged, 6,2-litre HEMI Hellcat V8 engine. What’s even more intriguing, it is connected to a 6-speed manual gearbox.To be able to fit the 527 kW engine, the engineers had to stretch the Jeep’s wheelbase by 30 cm, while the top 5 cm of the windscreen was chopped off. The latter was done simply to give the concept a better stance. Some exterior Mopar additions include the power dome vented engine bonnet, Satin Black grille, LED

headlamps, fog lamps and the rock rails.Further exterior enhancements include steel front and rear bumpers, 17-inch wheels with 39,5-inch BF Goodrich tyres, and finally front and rear Dana 60 axles and Fox shocks.Climb inside, and sport bucket seats will keep you in place (from a Dodge Viper) during your off-road adventures.Jeep ComancheThis concept is based on the Jeep Renegade. This bakkie is according to Jeep “a nod to Jeep pickup trucks of the years past, taking styling cues from military and civilian Jeep heritage”. Interesting additions include the winch, steel rear bumper and the removable soft top. Compared to the Renegade, the wheelbase is 15 cm longer, leading to a 152 cm rear loading bay.Several Performance Parts have also been added. These include off-road rails, a 5 cm lift kit, and a winch bolster.
