which takes place at the College. The initial challenge for the College was to address the limitations of our network and broadband provision, which restricted so much of what we were able to do in our classrooms. This challenge was overcome when late last year the College signed up as a member of AARNET, the Australian Academic and Research Network, a subsidiary of the CSIRO and the network providers for all Australian universities. AARNET provides the College with significant size and speed when it comes to broadband provision and capacity. Following this significant step forward, College staff were then able to examine numerous options with great confidence. This involved researching software, hardware and learning management systems. It also involved liaising and in some cases, visiting other schools to witness their programs in place. Whilst this was really rewarding and relevant, it became apparent that there was no one size fits all approach! Even within the network of ASC schools the approaches to the use of ICT in their teaching and learning are diverse, with one school saying one thing and the next saying the opposite! This led to a detailed and at times, robust process for Trinity staff and I am pleased to advise the College community that we are ready to launch our ICT platform for 2016 and beyond. Trinity Anglican College will introduce a new information technology platform to enrich the classroom experience for all students in the Senior School (Years 7-12) from 2016. The concept involves a ‘Bring Your Own Designated Device’ (BYODD) program and utilises the ‘Canvas’ Learning Management System (LMS). This initiative will enrich the classroom experience and offer greater potential for authentic learning experiences in all subjects. Through the program, students will be able to access Canvas, our new LMS, which offers real time access to class resources, assignments, homework, discussions, marks and teacher feedback. It is an exciting time as we move toward a new model of personal learning devices. Our teachers, with support from the IT and e-Learning Team, are eagerly exploring the possibilities that BYODD and our new online tools can offer to engage and extend students. An Information Night is planned for Tuesday, 4 August commencing at 7pm in the Multi-Purpose Hall in the Senior School. I would encourage parents and students to come along to this information night, at which documents outlining this initiative in greater detail will be distributed to all in attendance. This session will be an important opportunity for parents to hear from key staff about the BYODD platform, how it will enhance the teaching and learning at the College and what it means for individual students and their parents.

4 Newsletter 11, Week 1, Term 3 24 July 2015

At this point, the BYODD platform will only be incorporated into the Senior School years (Years 7 – 12). The College plans to reallocate a number of its ICT resources to Junior School classrooms in 2016, especially Years 5 and 6 as a result of the changes in the Senior School.

Senior School Pastoral Care and House Structures Trinity Anglican College is committed to working positively with students and their parents throughout each student’s educational journey. Trinity offers and values a liberal, holistic education to its students and this is firmly based on the best possible pastoral care and well-being for each student. The College takes care and pride in its pastoral care approach and structures in both the Junior and Senior Schools. In this sense, the College is always looking at how we can improve the way we administer pastoral care to our students. One key element in this is the strength of the relationships which can be established and maintained between staff and students.

The pastoral care structures and programs that are in place at Trinity are the subject of a lot of on-going professional dialogue amongst staff at the College. In 2013, as part of my Sabbatical, I visited a number of schools throughout the UK to examine, amongst other things, the pastoral care structures and approaches of these places. Since then, members of the College’s Senior Leadership Team have been involved in dialogue about how we might improve our current horizontal structures, particularly as we continue to enjoy steady enrolment growth.

I am pleased to announce to the College community that we are moving to a more pronounced House-based pastoral care system from the beginning of 2016.

Up until this point in the life of the College, the four Houses: Kelton, Hoffman, Petts and Rosborough have been important teams when it comes to the College’s inter-House sporting and more recently, cultural events (Athletics, Cross-Country, Swimming and Christmas Carols). They have not, however, carried any weight when it comes to the pastoral care and academic development of each student. From 2016, the College will move to six (6) Houses with the addition of Kimball and Lankaster Houses. The names for the two additional Houses were chosen along the same lines as our original Houses – the names of local Thurgoona men who served with some distinction in World War I: Leslie Austin Kimball and William Sydney Lankaster.

The decision to move to a House based pastoral structure allows the College the opportunity to establish on-going relationships and to work with students as they make their way through the year levels in the Senior School. Each House will be led by a Head of House and this person, along with a small team of Pastoral Care Tutors, will be able to work with each student across the six years of the Senior School. Each House will contain approximately 85 students in 2016 and when the College reaches its optimum size, each House will include about 110 students.

5 Newsletter 11, Week 1, Term 3 24 July 2015

The Houses will be the integral pastoral care structure and unit at Trinity, particularly in the Senior School. Each student will be allocated to one of six Houses as they enter the Senior School in Year 7. In Years 7, 8 and 9 the Pastoral Care groups will be organised in horizontal House groups; that is, students from each House are grouped in House-based pastoral groups for Year 7, then Year 8 and then Year 9. This will enable the College to employ some Middle School strategies and pedagogy, ensuring that the transition into the Senior School is as smooth and positive as possible. This will also allow us to continue to operate our successful Year 9 Discovery Program.

When students move to Year 10, they will remain a member of the same House but will be allocated to a vertical House group. This will consist of approximately six students from the House in Years 10, 11 and 12. Each group in the horizontal structures of Years 7 – 9 and the vertical structures of Years 10 – 12 is overseen and looked after by a House Pastoral Care Tutor. The Tutor will be a first port of call for all matters relating to the pastoral care, academic and social development of each student in his/her group.

The more senior role of Head of House will take on the primary responsibility for each student in his or her House, from Year 7 through to Year 12. They will be concerned with the academic growth and overall development of each student in the House and will form genuine and meaningful relationships with each student, their parents and the Pastoral Care Tutors working within the House.

In terms of student leadership, each House will have a male and female House Captain and these students will also be appointed as College Prefects. House Vice-Captains will also be appointed and will assist the Head of House and House Captains with a range of activities, from organising regular House Assemblies to the preparation of House teams for inter-House sporting and cultural events.

In some schools, this important pastoral care work is undertaken by Year Level Coordinators. After a lot of research and discussion, we have decided that a House based pastoral care system is going to be more effective for the College community.

Of course, students in the Junior School will be attached to one of the six Houses but their pastoral care and academic development needs will be looked after by their classroom teacher (with the support of the Director of Pastoral Care, Chaplain, Assistant Head of Junior School and Head of Junior School), as is the case now.

This is an exciting development for the College and I am looking forward to working with these new structures, the new Heads of House and importantly, the new House Captains next year. Along with a few senior staff, I am interviewing a number of applicants for the role of Head of House this week and look forward to letting everyone know who has been appointed to these roles in the near future.

Stay tuned for more information about our new House structures!

Capital Improvements at Wodonga Campus In the last few weeks of Term 2 and over the holidays a number of capital improvements were commenced at the College’s Wodonga campus. These included the erection and installation of some additional playground equipment for students, the construction of an internal sports store, meeting room and staff room in the main auditorium and the installation of automatic electronic gates at the entry to the campus. These are important improvements to the College and I thank the facilities staff for their work in these. No Compare (‘they … compare themselves with themselves’. 2 Corinthians 10:12)

Remember that kid in primary school, you know, the one with the cool light-up trainers that made your regular off-white Dunlop volleys feel like rubbish? No?

Just like that, chances are, in a few years you won’t remember measuring yourself against someone else’s standards. So why bother now? You might want what those around you seem to have but honestly, you’ll have forgotten about it not too far down the track.

And, as for now, God gives you exactly what you need. Let’s say that again. God gives you exactly what you need. So, the guy next to you has something that looks really flashy right now (especially when they stamp their feet?) that’s a part of their plan. God’s taking care of your plan and He’s asking you to work with Him to be all that you are made to be. And believe it or not, He’ll give you the right tools to get there. Whatever you don’t have is as much a part of the plan as what you do have. And yes that can be horribly disappointing sometimes, especially when everyone else seems to have everything sorted. But not getting those grades, that job, the partner may have been the first step towards a bigger and better plan.

Pray for God’s view of your situation, and ask for His help seeing it His way.

Year 8 and Year 10 Subject Information Evenings and Year 12 Information Parents of Year 10 Students: I am sure that our Year 10 students are excited by the prospect of selecting subjects that capture their interests, enhance their skills and assist them to pursue a pathway beyond school. This is a reminder that the Subject Information Evening for Year 11 2016 is taking place early in Week 2 on Monday, 27 July from 7pm in the Multi-Purpose Hall. Year 10 students are looking forward to putting their questions to the many teachers who will be there. Students have access to information regarding the subjects on offer. This year, we are using an online platform for students to record their preferences; the mechanics of this has been outlined to students. It will be great to see as many parents as possible on the night. Parents of Year 8 Students: Year 8 students have the opportunity to have their questions about Year 9 subject choices answered at the Year 9 2016 Subject Information Evening from 7pm Wednesday, 19 August in the Multi-Purpose Hall. The students have enjoyed experiences across many different subjects over the last two years and this is their first opportunity to pursue their interests in the choice of elective subjects. Parents are most cordially invited to attend the evening with their son or daughter and talk to teachers who will be keen to provide information about their specialist subjects. Year 12 Holiday Seminars, Major Projects and Trial HSC Exams: It has been wonderful to see so many of our Year 12 students take advantage of the variety of holiday seminars that were conducted over the semester break. I commend the efforts of those students who engaged in these experiences and sincerely thank the teachers for their time and effort. Students undertaking Visual Art, Design and Technology, Music and French are particularly busy as they work toward the submission of their major works and process diaries, and the completion of oral language examinations. Students should be maintaining a ready dialogue with their teachers in order to ensure that their major works are progressing steadily toward completion and that they are in compliance with all project specifications. Dialogue between Mme Bennett and her students should be plentiful and, of course, in French! The focus of our Year 12 students is firmly on the Trial Examination. This important set of assessments commence Monday 3 August and conclude Wednesday 12 August. For all students, these exams figure as significant assessment items that will assist in determining the assessment component of their final HSC mark. The Term 3 holiday homework set by teachers was designed with exam preparation in mind. The students are busy honing their study schedule in order to maximise their results in this important set of exams. The Trial

Carmen’s Story During the last week of Term 2, students in Year 10 listened to a presentation by John Maher who talked to the students about Carmen, his daughter, who was tragically killed in a car

crash. John’s presentation was powerful and emotional, he spoke to the students about the impact Carmen’s death had on her family, friends and the wider community. John has been nominated for Australian of the Year on a number of occasions for the road safety message he gives to students. He has been coming to Trinity to speak to Year 10 students for the last five years. The tragic events in our local community in recent months highlights the need for our student drivers to hear John’s message. The presentation was confronting for some students, but one they needed to hear. Be Relentless Next Thursday, students in Years 7-11 will hear Josh Wood’s inspiring story. Josh became paralysed from the neck down after a snowboarding accident. He was told he would never walk again, at best he may get use of two fingers in his right hand and “if” he does, he should be grateful. Josh had a very strong mother, who totally believed in his ability to recover, and with the support of an amazing, talented ‘Team of Healers’ combined with the experience of years of recovering from his past injuries and comebacks, he made the ultimate comeback and took his first few steps only four months later … within nine months he was back on his dirt bike and within three years he strapped on his snowboard and rode again. Josh is an internationally published author who now mentors and speaks to students and injured athletes about his passion in believing anything is possible where the will and commitment is strong.

Malcolm Thomas Head of Senior School

Over the break I was able to listen to a number of discussions about the direction of Education in the United States. The debates in this large Democracy are, in some ways, refreshingly similar to the current debates in Australia between state and federal concerns. On reading the press and talking with the tertiary students (often working hard to pay off their student loan) it was obvious that the common elements of good learning and authentic leadership are at the forefront. There is much consternation from various sectors about the true meaning of learning and how the Nation should be focussing on various strategies and goals. The system in the United States is constantly in review. They are researching and reviewing all aspects from the approach to external examinations as a measure through to how teachers and students ask questions in class. It is always interesting to listen to the debates from a different perspective and to realise that education and the process of learning is at the heart of all that is done in many different cultures.

The process of formal feedback was also discussed as there is a wide debate about the College system. Part of our feedback is the reports and how these documents reflect the learning continuum. With all such feedback it is important to target the next phase; to take advice about our direction and to map a course for the next leg of the journey. This form of communication should be shared with all stakeholders to ensure that there is a common understanding.

We are all looking forward to a productive term as students become involved in their learning.

Creative Pursuits: the extensive program continues next Thursday. The students approached the activities in a positive manner. This is a large undertaking and the support of all staff and students is appreciated.

Parent Helpers: a number of parents have asked about another information session regarding their involvement as helpers. I would like to run this as a group session but also understand the busy nature of running a family. If you would like to be part of the helper group could you please e-mail me at the College and I will endeavour to organise an appropriate time.

Assembly: It is wonderful to witness the parental support for students at assembly. Due to the large number attending we have decided to sit parents in the second bay in the MPH. This should afford all parents better viewing during the assembly.

Public Speaking Finals: Sam Vacaro (3SO,) Ariel Halford (4KS), Mattea Kelly (6SF), Amy Auwardt (6SF) and Rosie Bradford (6SF) will represent the College at the local Final of the Lions Club Public Speaking competition on the evening of Monday, 3 August. We wish them well and look forward to hearing about their experience at this level.

National Tree Planting Day: As part of National School’s Tree Day, Albury City Council has organised an event for local school students to revegetate ‘The Pines’ reserve at Lake Hume. Trinity Anglican College has chosen to invite members of our ECOA group to take part in this initiative due to the commitment they have shown towards environmental issues. This excursion will take place on Thursday, 23 July.

Trent Barrett Shield: Students from Years 3 and 4 have been invited to take part in this during week 2 on the Monday.

Army Band Visit: The visit involves a concert and also allows students to work with professional musicians. This will take place next Wednesday and we look forward to the final concert in the afternoon.

Welcome back after what I trust has been a restful holiday break. This term is set to be a busy one with learning experiences. Library News With many thanks to the Albury Campus’ Head Librarian, Rob Childs, I am delighted to inform the community that a computer-based borrowing system has now been installed in the Wodonga Campus Library allowing the students to participate in the Library borrowing process. The program also allows the school to keep track of the books borrowed from the Library. Training in the use of the program took place over the holiday break. Sally Disher, Michelle Singleton and Natalie Pirkola gave up some of their valuable family time to be trained in the program’s applications. It is planned that they would be available for class borrowing sessions. Their invaluable assistance with the borrowing/returning formalities will mean the class teachers can focus on the task of assisting students to choose an appropriate book to borrow (maximum of two books per student). The plan is that when the Library Ladies are available for class borrowing sessions, the students can fully participate in the process of Library borrowing.

The Library Ladies are also going to train some of the Year 5/6 Library Monitors on how the system works. In this way, the Monitors will be able to help out with the borrowing from time to time. Perhaps you would like to be trained in the Library computer system’s use and assist the teachers during Library sessions? If so, contact the office for further details.

Gardening Volunteers Many thanks to the merry band of gardening volunteers who spent time over the break tidying, replanting and mulching the garden near the office. The garden beautification group is to be commended for the work they have done. Many thanks to the Rawson family, Hayes family, Billington family and Glenda Jones for their initiative with this project. As the weather warms and the plantings come into bloom, we will all benefit from their fantastic work.

Basketball The 2015 winter basketball season has begun. Trinity has 24 teams representing the College. We wish all teams the best for the coming season, especially our new teams, Under 10 Trinity Reds, Under 14 Trinity Lions and Under 16 Trinity Timberwolves. All game fees and relevant fees should have been paid by the first round. Parents are encouraged to refer to an email that they would have received previously with the relevant instructions. By becoming a member of a Trinity team students must extend their commitment to attend weekly training sessions. Your child’s coach will confirm their training details over the first couple of rounds.

On Tuesday, 28 July, the Performing Arts Concert takes place in the MPH at 7pm. This evening allows us the opportunity to showcase many of the different ensembles that operate at Trinity College. The students and staff have been working hard to prepare for this event, as well as for the Albury Wodonga Eisteddfod, which also takes place at the start of Term 3. At the end of Term 2 we held our first Music Camp hosted at the Wodonga Campus. This allowed for two days of intensive rehearsal of both new and older material. It was very pleasing to hear significant improvement in all ensembles involved in this camp. Students in Year 10 and 11 Drama also participated in the Shakespeare Generate Festival hosted by HotHouse Theatre and all performed at a very high standard. What was most pleasing about this event was the focus and maturity demonstrated by all the performers. The Performing Arts Concert features the following ensembles: Junior Strings, Blow Your Own Horn, Ellington Band, Stage Band, Soul Band, Year 10 Drama, Year 11 Drama, Pops

Year 6 have recently been studying the properties of light which included the construction of periscopes. Both classes used their periscopes for a week and then returned the mirrors to the Science Department. In readiness for Year 6, 2016, we would like to collect old compact mirrors or any other sort of mirror, so that the periscopes could be used for a longer period of time in class. The science mirrors are used for experiments and applications by other year groups.

By making periscopes, Year 6 learned that light travels in straight lines and that the mirror reflects the rays of light allowing you to see around a corner or higher up. The application for submarines and use in the WW1 trenches were discussed.

What and When

On Friday, 21st August 2015, you can be part of a WORLD RECORD attempt! The world record attempt will be for:

The most people looking through a telescope at different sites in the one country at the same time.

Many astronomical societies around Australia are supporting this record attempt and we need as many people as possible to be involved. The Astronomical Society of Albury Wodonga (ASAW) are teaming up with Trinity College so please be sure to bring along all your family and friends so you can all be part of a new world record!

World Record Stargazing at Trinity College

18 Newsletter 11, Week 1, Term 3 24 July 2015

Come to the Thurgoona Campus soccer oval from 6.30pm to look though a telescope at objects in the night sky. The actual world record attempt will be made by everyone looking at the moon at 8pm through telescopes. We plan for a drone to fly over and film and take photos of the event.

How can I ensure I am looking through a telescope for the event?

With so many people needing to be looking through telescopes at the same time, lots of telescopes are required. If you already have one, fantastic. But if not, there are other options. The Astronomical Society of Albury Wodonga will have some telescopes on the night for you to look though, but with the number of people expected and to ensure you have the best opportunity for viewing as possible the other option is a special, low-cost telescope made available for this event.

The special telescope being made for the event is a 3cm aluminium tube telescope with a small, desktop tripod, slide focuser, and works for about 30x magnification which is good enough to resolve some craters on the Moon. The telescope costs only $10 and includes an official certificate of participation. To ensure that our numbers can be ratified everyone who will attend must register online at the Astronomical Society of Albury Wodonga Web site at www.asaw.org.au/world-record-stargazing. Telescopes are also available on this website.

Look forward to seeing you there. Mattea Kelly
