FROM THE PRINCIPAL CONT’D Pupil Free DayFriday March 27 is our first Pupil Free Day for 2020. All curriculum staff will be involved in Professional Development.

I thank all parents and caregivers for their understanding about Pupil Free Days and why they are so important for staff professional development.

Caleb Scott Memorial DayOn Monday March 2, we as a school community will pay tribute to Caleb Scott, a year 9 student who tragically lost his life two years ago. We have planned an afternoon of events in memory of Caleb; which link to his interests of football and baseball. The afternoon will begin with the school community paying respect to Caleb. The year 10 students will play football and baseball wearing North Whyalla Football Club and Roadies Baseball Club uniforms versing Whyalla High to honour his two passions. As a school we are encouraging anyone that knew Caleb to come along and be part of the day.

Knock Out SportsThe Knock Out Sports events will be starting on February 14 with the Year 8/9 Boys Knock Out Cricket to be held here and played against Port Augusta.

Knock Out Sports are a very big part of Whyalla High School, and we aim to give as many students as possible the opportunity to participate. This year we will be submitting teams for cricket, basketball, netball, soccer, football and hockey.

Please be aware though, that students will not be eligible to represent Whyalla High in a team if they are not up to date with their learning assessments. They are also not eligible if they receive a take home, internal suspension or suspension within six weeks of the sporting carnival.

Being part of a Whyalla High sporting team is a reward for positive behaviour.

School Counselling ServiceA reminder to all that there is a school counselling service available at Whyalla High School.

This year we welcome Amy Vlachoulis who is also a trained social worker employed by Centacare Catholic Country SA and will be here three days a week working along side

Cass Ward who is our full time counsellor also employed by Centacare Catholic Country SA.

WASSACWestern Area Secondary Schools Athletics Carnival (WASSAC) is fast approaching. Whyalla High School will once again be hosting the WASSAC trial day for students from Whyalla High, Stuart High and Edward John Eyre schools who are interested in gaining selection to the Whyalla Alliance team on Wednesday February 19. Students will have the opportunity to try out in multiple track and field events including the 1500 metre, sprints, long jump, triple jump, high jump, javeline, shotput, discus and more. Please feel free to contact either Dianna or myself if you have any questions or concerns about your child’s learning at Whyalla High School.

STUDENT CALCULATORS FOR MATHEMATICS Scientific calculators are an important tool for learning at Whyalla High School across all year levels and are used in more than just the mathematics classes. It is highly recommended that every student brings their own scientific calculator to school every day along with all of their other school equipment. Currently, many students do not have their own scientific calculator which may impact the teaching and learning process throughout the year. Calculators can be purchased from Woolworths/Coles/Target/Office Choice for $20-$25.Ms Katie Edwards Mathematics Coordinator

CLASSROOMS/WORKING ENVIRONMENTS Our teachers have been extremely busy preparing their classrooms for the new school year. Here at Whyalla High School, we understand that the classroom environment is one of the most important factors that affects student learning. We take pride in classroom presentation and aim to support student learning through making calm, inclusive and safe working environments. Here is a snippet of some of our teacher’s classrooms.

Did you knowEvery classroom contains a ‘Policies and Procedures’ display and also shows the four school values of Respect, Relationships, Learning Achievement and Inclusion!Ms Shannon Parsons Literacy Coordinator

SOUTH AUSTRALIAN ABORIGINAL SECONDARY TRAINING ACADEMY (SAASTA) Leroy Risborg and Breanna Hollinshed were involved in the Whyalla SAASTA Academy from 2017 to 2019. Over these three years both students learnt about and developed a passion for sharing their Aboriginal culture. During their final year in the program both students took their passion to a new level, leading the younger students and becoming significant role models in their community. As their teacher, I am extremely proud to have supported their development within SAASTA and have loved seeing them grow into young leaders within the community. As part of the Personal Endeavour Task, both Leroy and Breanna researched the career pathway of an Aboriginal Community Education Officer (ACEO) within primary schools. Through their hard work in late 2019 both students developed a network of contacts, and through this made contact with Long Street Primary School. Long Street Primary School were looking for an ACEO for 2020, and through communication over the Christmas break with Leroy and Breanna, both students have been given roles as ACEOs at Long Street Primary School.

Leroy and Breanna should both be extremely proud of their achievements at such a young age. The passion and knowledge they developed throughout the SAASTA program has seen them both become the future in supporting and leading Aboriginal Education. Long Street Primary School are lucky to have two passionate people within their school, and I wish both Leroy and Breanna all the best!Mr Jacob Ellidge Aboriginal Education Coordinator/SAASTA Teacher

ATTENDANCE AT WHYALLA HIGH Attending school every day improves a child’s future life outcomes. It supports their learning and wellbeing. Parents must make sure their child goes to school every day. This is a parent’s legal responsibility. Here at Whyalla High School we treat attendance with high importance and offer a variety of support services to assist our students with maintaining high attendance levels. Our Leadership team along with our Attendance SSO ensure that students attendance is recorded and followed up. We ask that parents notify the school of any non-attendance as soon as practicable. Here are some key pointers:• If students are arriving late, they must

sign in at Student Services.• Please place a note in their diary

with a reason for their lateness that students can show Student Services staff on arrival.

• It is preferred that parents call the school on 86458844 to notify the school of any non-attendance, providing a reason for record purposes.

• Alternatively, parents can reply to the SMS that is sent out to parents of all students who are absent with no reason.
