Mark Hanuka or

Hanukkah or Chan-ukah – spell it any

way you’d like, there is no one

right way to spell a Hebrew

word that contains a

sound not found in Eng-

lish – is the Jewish Festi-

val of Lights. Many

mistakenly think that it

is the Jewish Christmas,

but that is not the case;

other than occurring at

the same time of theyear and both involving

gift giving these two

holidays have nothing

to do with each other. So what

is Hanukah? The word

Hanukah actually translates as

“dedication” and it recalls the

miraculous military victory of

the pious Macabees over the

Hellenists that were restricting  Jewish life in ancient Israel.

When the Macabees won they

re-dedicated the Temple in

Jerusalem to the service of God,

hence the name of the holiday.

There is a legend that as the

Macabees prepared the Temple

they only found one cruise of oil

fit to be used to light the Meno-

rah for one day, but that they litit anyway and it miraculously

burned for eight days until more

oil was available for the Meno-

rah. This is why

Hanukah is known as

the Festival of Lights

and is commemorated

with the lighting of a

Hanukiyah, a nine-

branched candelabra to

commemorate the eight-

day holiday.The annual obser-

vance of Hanukah re-

upon us. And each year it

seems to come earlier and ear-

York City radio sta-

tion was playing 24/7

Christmas music by

the end of November.

Those who shopped

in malls were hearing

the sounds of Christ-

made for Thanksgiv-

ing.

What is Christmas? It

must mean something more

than just a consumer free-for-all

last month of every year. But

how do we untangle that which

is the core of Christmas andthat which has been appended

to it (such as Santa Claus and

reindeer) as the years have pro-

gressed?

Obviously, the best place

to turn to is the source. Though

the celebration of December

25th was several hundred years

in the making, the focus of the

celebration has very clearsource material. In the pages of

scripture, we see what the

events of the first Christmas

were and why we still

celebrate that night

thousands of years

later.

Most of us are aware

of the story of Christ-

mas. The baby Jesus is

born in Bethlehem to

a young, newly married Jewish couple - Joseph

and Mary. But this is

 N

eurodevelopmental

treatment (NDT) is

an internationallyutilized and recognized ther-

apy for children with motor

impairments practiced by ex-

perienced physical therapists,occupational therapists and

speech language therapists.

The concept of NDT was first

developed by Dr. and Mrs.Berta Bobath in the 1940’s

and has been used by thera-

pists worldwide, continually

evolving as new information

on the movement sciences

occur. NDT trained therapists

work collaboratively with

children, family and doctors

to develop treatment pro-

grams based on principles of

neurology and physiology.

Neurodevelopmentaltreatment is a hands on ap-

proach used to work with

children who have an insult

to the central nervous system.

This insult creates difficultywith posture and movement

resulting in functional activ-

ity limitations. Children

with central nervous disorders

typically have a very limited

repertoire of movement or

poverty of movement and can

only move in a very limited

way. The aim of treatment is

to assist the child in develop-

ing new movement strategies

while limiting abnormal pos-tures so that he or she is able

to adapt to the environment

by improving the efficiency

and normalcy of his or her

movements. A great empha-sis is placed on therapeutic

handling which focuses on

making desired movements

more prevalent and prevent-

ing undesirable movements.

Undesirable movements can

produce secondary problems

that can impede progress to-

ward functional goals. The ul-

timate goal of NDT

treatment is to optimize func-

tion, minimize impairmentand prevent disability. This

increase in function will im-

prove the child’s independ-

ence and better their quality

of life.

Individuals who have

minimal to severe motor dif-

ficulty can greatly benefit

from this type of treatmentwhich includes:

 Johnny Carson, as his fa-

mous character, Carnac

the Magnificent, where

he played a psychic who clair-

voyantly divined the answer

to a question or two which

were “hermetically sealed” in

an envelope he placed at his

forehead, would have an-

swered Legacy and Currencyto the Ed McMahon question,

“Name two things you leave

behind when you die?”

What legacy will you

leave behind? What will peo-

ple say about you at your fu-

neral? In conversation on this

subject, I suggest that people

take their internet Smart

Phone into the cemetery to

look-up the names on some

headstones to see what, if any-thing, they did in their life

that was worth recording and

finding on a Google Search.

In virtually all of the cases,

the search would yield no re-

sults other than an obituary,

perhaps. What would yours

say? A little intimidated by

the question? Why not find

out for yourself by searching

your name on Google or any

browser right now and seewhat comes up. If nothing ap-

pears, fear not, for you aren’t

dead  yet and there’s still time

to do or accomplish some-

thing that could add to or be a

part of your legacy. Can you

think of any ideas, activities,

strategies or opportunities

that could be note-worthy?

Perhaps you could organize a

fundraiser to help find a cure

for a dreaded disease or help

feed the hungry or get spon-sorship for a cycle or

walkathon for the same rea-

sons. You could be an organ

donor or bone-marrow donor,

even simply a plasma or blood

donor (or organize a Blood

Drive in your town) or even

something less invasive like

becoming a hospital volun-

teer; the list of opportunities

is remarkable!

There are basically twokinds of charitable donors,

those who give of their time

and those who give of their

money and some who can af-

ford to do both. Regardless, of

whether you have the ability

to enjoy a lifetime of giving or

giving a large sum once in

your life, that, could create a

legacy captured on the World

Wide Web for eternity. For

those people buried under theheadstones where no search

results were found, is it possi-

ble that their legacy was the

following? Here lies “John

Doe”, the only thing he left

behind was a filled-up septic

tank, after all, that is the only

evidence history recorded of

his life.

How important is your

legacy to you? It’s the “final

statement” of your life, it’s the“last impression” you get to

leave behind. If you’re wor-

ried about how you will be

judged by humanity (or sim-

ply how you will be remem-

bered), perhaps you will be

motivated to do something

extraordinary while there’s

still time left! You are still

ALIVE! Alas, it is not hu-

manity that will judge you in

your eternal life; that scale of justice will certainly be meas-

ured differently by the

Almighty and I would think

that a good life here on earth

would weigh in heavily over

the next phase of your jour-

ney.

The other answer

Carnac stated was currency.

Money left behind is also a

legacy where most of the time

the benefactors are the chil-dren of the deceased; children

reflect kindly on their parents

who endow them with a “for-

tune,” especially if it were un-

encumbered by the IRS and

the State Division of Taxa-

tion. Properly drawn estate

planning legal documents are

the first defense from the

“Forced Charity” imposed by

government taxation of a life-

times worth of saving and in-vesting. The next way to

insure a sizeable amount of

currency for your loved ones

is to purchase a “fortune” of

life insurance, to either pay

the taxes on your “fortune” or

to create the “fortune” itself,

tax-free.

Remember Ralph Kram-

den, played by the late, great,

 Jackie Gleason when he was

named in a Will to receiveone of his deceased passenger’s

“Fortune”, which later turned

out to be a bird, complete

with cage and Ralph and Nor-

ton both passed-out in shock?

After all, they were told that

A Team Effortreminds us of the importance of

fighting for what we believe in,

for religious freedom. As Amer-

icans we have much to be grate-

ful for – we live in a free nationthat promotes religious toler-

ance; but with freedom comes

responsibility. We need to sup-

port our troops that defend these

freedoms around the globe. We

need to help those who live in

other parts of the world that do

not have these freedoms, most

notably many African nations.

And we need to share the

bounty that is ours with those

less fortunate here in our owncommunities.

Hanukah is a home based

holiday that gives us the oppor-

tunity to gather with family and

friends to celebrate, to remem-

ber and to, like the Macabees,

try and make a difference even

though the odds are overwhelm-

ingly against us. May the light

of the Hanukah candles moti-

vate you to make a difference;

and may 2012 be a year of health, happiness and peace for

one and all.

 Joe And Karen Granelli

from Stanhope, New Jersey

did everything right…….

worked hard, got a good job, re-

mained married for 30 years, raised a beautiful daughter,

cared for elderly parents, took

modest vacations and bought a

home within their means.

Then Karen Granelli got sick,

an aneurism and subsequent

stroke, and in time they had ex-

hausted their medical insurance

coverage, their 401K retirement

plan, and because Karen got

sick and was unable to work, the

Granelli’s income was reduced

substantially. Their house isnow in foreclosure and Joe had

to declare bankruptcy due to

over-whelming medical bills. If

not tragic enough, Sarah, their

22 year old daughter, had to

drop out of Seton Hall Univer-

sity with only a year to go be-

cause they couldn’t afford the

tuition. Now, since she is not a

full time student, she must begin

to pay her student loans.

This is a situation which

could happen to anyone. Peo-ple who know the Granelli fam-

ily know that over the years

they were always available to

help others. Now it is time to

help them. Montville UNICO

Foundation has established a

“Sarah Granelli Scholarship

Kinnelon dentist Dr.

Peter Brusco recently

ran a food drive for the

Bethel Ranch. Because of the

generous donations of many of

his patients, he was able to

provide Bethel Ranch founder,Reverend William Stelpstra,

with not only an abundance of

food and dental products but

also a check for $500. Bethel

Ranch enables homeless men

to live in a safe, clean environ-

ment. They receive daily assis-

tance with basic needs, such as

laundry, meals and supervision.Pictured are Dr. Brusco (left)

For some people, the

pain from sciatica can

be severe or debilitat-

ing. For others, the pain

might be infrequent or irritat-

ing. Either way, sciatica af-

fects a large percentage of

today’s population and if not

managed properly can dimin-

ish one’s quality of life. Many

believe that sciatica is the re-

sult of a particular event or

trauma, however, sciatica is

more commonly a result of

general wear and tear on the

structures of the lower spine.

Sciatica will usually only

affect one side of the lower

body. The pain that results

from sciatica often radiates

from the lower back into the

back of the thigh (hamstring)

and down through the leg

(calf) and potentially into the

foot and toes Sciatica maynot only present as pain, but

may be accompanied by tin-

gling and/or numbness de-

pending on the amount of

pressure or irritation on the

nerve roots that lead to the

sciatic nerve. This irritation

of the nerve root is called

radiculopathy and is responsi-

ble for the symptoms we com-

monly call sciatica. The large

sciatic nerve is formed by in-

dividual nerve roots exiting

out from the spine in the

lower back and merging to-

gether into one common

nerve. As the sciatic nerve

descends, branches from the

nerve extend through the

buttocks and down the back

of each leg and into the ankle

and foot. Depending on

which nerve root is affected

or at which point the sciatic

nerve is compromised, one or

all of the following symptoms

may occur:

• Constant moderate to se-vere lower back pain

•Pain in the buttocks or leg

that worsens when sitting,

sneezing, and/or coughing.

•Tightness in the buttocks or

hamstring that is not relieved

with stretching

• Burning or tingling down

the leg

•Weakness, numbness or dif-

ficulty moving leg, foot, or

toes

•Lower back pain and/or leg

pain that is relieved with po-

sition.

•Inability to “straighten up”

due to pain.

The most common cause

of sciatica are bulging and

herniated discs in the spine

pressing against the nerve

roots that lead to the sciatic

nerve. Other less common

conditions that causes sciat-

keen to learn and do more for his patients Matthew began

studying diligently for his certification in Orthopedic ManualTherapy. This training exposed him to the concept of Maitland Australian therapy, the Maitland Concept is referredto as a “concept” and not as a “technique”. Emphasis is placednot on the technique of treatment but on a basic philosophy-a thought and decision making process, involving analyticalexamination and assessment on which treatment decisions arebased.

Matthew has also had the thrill of studying with world-renowned therapists Brian Mulligan and David Butler, furtherexpanding his clinical skills into more diverse orthopedic and

As 2011 winds down

there’s less uncertainty

about the short-term

outlook for tax law than we had

at the end of last year. With this

temporary clarity comes the op-

portunity to create a sound tax-

saving plan – and the time to

put your plan into action. Here

are several strategies to consider.

•Reduce AGI to qualify for tax

breaks

Reducing your adjusted

gross income could increase eli-

gibility for income-limited de-

ductions and credits.

The standard deduction

for 2011 is $11,600 when you’re

married filing jointly ($5,800

when you’re single). When your

itemized deductions; that is, ex-

penses you pay for medical care,

mortgage interest, taxes, chari-

table contributions, casualty

losses, and miscellaneous deduc-

tions, are close to that amount,

advance payments could save

you tax dollars. For example,

you can choose to make your

final estimated state income tax

payment in December instead

of January. Since itemized de-

ductions are no longer limited

by your income, timing the pay-

ment of expenses might be more

beneficial than you expect.

There’s another reason to

double-check deductions: your

alternative minimum tax

(AMT) exposure. Certain ex-

penses, including state taxes

and medical costs, are reduced

or eliminated under AMT rules.

The AMT calculation also

eliminates the standard deduc-

tion. In some cases, you may

save money if you claim item-

ized deductions even if they

total less than your standard de-

duction.

•Reap tax benefits with retire-

ment savings

When it comes to retire-

ment saving, rule number one is

to contribute the maximum

amount allowed every year.

For 2011, the IRA contribution

limit is $5,000, and those 50

and older can contribute

$6,000. Participants in a 401(k)

plan can contribute as much as

$16,500 ($22,000 if 50 or

older).

Did you know you can

make IRA contributions for

your spouse when you’re work-

ing and your spouse is not? For

2011, the maximum spousal

IRA contribution is the lesser of

$5,000 or your combined

earned income. You can add an

additional $1,000 when your

spouse is over age 50.

If you’re self-employed, es-

tablishing a retirement plan

such as a SEP or a SIMPLE

means a current-year tax deduc-

tion in addition to tax-deferred

growth. For 2011, you can con-

tribute 25% of your salary to a

SEP plan, up to a maximum

contribution of $49,000. The

maximum SIMPLE contribu-

tion is $11,500, plus an addi-

tional $2,500 as a catch-up

contribution if you’re over age

50. A federal tax credit may also

be available – up to $500 for

each of the first three years of

your new plan. Remember,

credits reduce your tax bill dol-

lar for dollar.

•Review support provided for

relatives

While planning to maxi-

mize deductions, remember to

take into account the financial

support you provide for rela-

tives. Potential tax breaks in-

clude dependency exemptions,

head-of-household filing status,

medical deductions, and the de-

pendent care tax credit. Gener-

ally, you’ll need to provide over

half of your relatives living ex-

penses.

What if you don’t provide

more than 50% of support for

your relative? You could enter

into an arrangement with other

family members who provide

help, or you could shift assets

you would dispose of anyway to

pay for the support. You would

then be shifting the related in-

come and tax to your relative.

Here’s an illustration of

asset and income shifting. In-

stead of selling stock at a gain

and using the proceeds to pay

for a parent’s living expenses,

gift the stock to your parent and

Conventional wisdom

states that there are

four main unde lying

causes for canine allergy symp-

toms and effective dog allergy

treatment has been developed

for them. As all of those rea-

sons produce common symp-

toms, various tests may be

necessary to determine which

allergen is provoking a reac-

tion. Standard methods of

treatment are successful in

controlling most cases. Some

especially severe conditions

may require the use of steroids

or immunotherapy.

The two most common

causes of allergic reactions are

atopic, or inhalants,

mainly dust mites, pollen,

mold and mildew, and aller-

gens that are present in flea

saliva. The symptoms of an al-

lergy are most commonly

caused from inhaling an anti-

gen, or a substance which

causes the production of anti-

bodies. Studies show that in

excess of 40 percent of canines

react to the offending sub-

stances in flea bites.

Reasons that more rarely

produce responses are aller-

gies to food or of the skin. The

foods that are most likely to

cause symptoms are the same

foods that are the most com-

mon ingredients in commer-

cial food recipes. Certain

fungal infections, that is,

mange or ringworm, should be

ruled out if they are suspected.

Skin conditions that originate

from exposure to noxious sub-

stances are irritant or

allergic contact dermatitis.

These rare conditions are re-

sponses to irritating chemicals

or other antigens.

Complicating a specific

diagnosis as to exactly what

antigens are to blame, is the

fact that the same symptoms,

itching and skin problems,

characterize the different types

of disorders. Vomiting and di-

arrhea may indicate a food al-

lergy and continuing ear

problems or increased bowel

movements are other possible

signs. A food trial, in which

the pet is placed on a novel

food diet for twelve weeks, is

the method used to isolate the

food responsible.

Avoidance of the allergen

is a common strategy to reduce

symptoms for food, flea, atopic

and skin problems. By remov-

ing and then reintroducing

suspected allergens one at a

time, one may discover the

cause. Restricting ones pet to a

clean, uncarpeted room and

keeping them away from possi-

ble allergens is called an exclu-

sion trial. Slowly introducing

possible causes, including rub-

bing a substance such as grass

on the paw, will help to iden-

tify it.

The first step one can

take is to add Omega-3 fatty

acids to their pet’s

diet. This is fish or

flax oil and they

assist in reducing

the effects of hista-

mines, which are

responsible for the

itching and skin

conditions. If the

fatty acids do not

take effect in a few weeks, an-

tihistamine drugs, originally

designed for humans, can also

work for canines.

Topical therapy, which

involves treating the pets skin

with anti itch ointments,

shampoos, rinses or sprays

often have good results, but

these offer temporary relief.

Shampoos containing hydro-

cortisone are also used. Biotin,

a B vitamin, has also shown

positive results for some pets.

When none of the above

methods are adequate

for dog allergies treatment,

steroids produce good results,

but are not recommended for

long term use, because im-

mune or endocrine system

problems may develop over

time. Immunotherapy, involv-

ing allergy skin testing and a

series of injections, is a highly

successful approach for most

animals. This therapy takes a

dedicated pet owner, but re-

sults in significantly reduced

reactions to allergens.

to fulfill the prophecy of Isaiah

7:14, “The virgin will be with

child and will give birth to a

son, and they will call him Im-

manuel.” The place of His birth

is no coincidence either. The

prophets were clear that the

promised Messiah would be

born in Bethlehem (Micah

5:2). Joseph and Mary, after a

trip to Egypt to escape the

anger of Herod, make their res-

idence in Nazareth by the Sea

of Galilee - again, a fulfillment

of scripture (Isaiah 9:1-2).

So what’s the big deal?

Apart from the miracle of a vir-

gin having a son, what is so

noteworthy to commemorate

Christmas over two thousand

years later? This is where the

scriptures come alive with ver-

ification for the joy that has

been celebrated all these years.

There is little debate over

the humanity of Jesus. Most

would agree that at the very

least, He was the world’s great-

est teacher. We see in Him a lu-

cidity of thought and morality

that is present in no other per-

son. As we look at Him in the

Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke

and John) it is difficult not to

walk away with a deep sense

that He was not just a good

man, but a perfect human.

But scripture does not

leave us there. It goes on to de-

scribe Jesus as not only a perfect

human, but also as God. This is

where we stumble in our mod-

ern times, but scripture is clear.

In Colossians 1:19, we read,

“For God was pleased to have

all His fullness dwell in Jesus.”

In Colossians 2:9 God tells us

that “In Jesus, all the fullness of

the Deity lives in bodily form.”

Jesus was not just a fully perfect

human, He was fully perfect

God. This is not just the writ-

ings of His followers. Jesus

claimed to be God (John

10:30) and asserted the attrib-

utes of God (Mark 2:5-12). In-

terestingly, this was foretold in

the scriptures in Isaiah 9:6.

Note in this familiar verse that

a child is born who will be

called ‘Mighty God’ and ‘Ever-

lasting Father.’ Both these

terms are used elsewhere in Isa-

iah as a reference to God (Isa-

iah 10:20-21 and 64:8). So, in

this verse we see God predict-

ing through Isaiah that the

Messiah would be both God

and man.

But again, we are left with

the question, “So what.” If we

take the scriptures at face value

we can clearly see that Jesus

was both God and man. What

is the celebration all about? In

order to understand that, we

must go back to Job.

 Job 9:33-35 says in refer-

ence to his relationship with

God, “If only there were some-

one to arbitrate between us, to

lay his hand upon us both,

someone to remove God’s rod

from me, so that His terror

would frighten me no more.

Then I would speak up without

fear of Him, but as it now

stands with me, I cannot.”

Scripture teaches that our im-

perfections separate us from a

perfect God so that we are all in

Job’s dilemma - a desire to be in

relationship with God but with

no basis for that relationship.

That may seem appalling to

many but we are comforted

that God is also appalled by our

circumstances. In Isaiah 59:16,

God says that “He saw that

there was no one, He was ap-

palled that there was no one to

intervene; so His own arm

worked salvation for Him and

His own righteousness sus-

tained Him.” God was not sat-

isfied in leaving us in a hopeless

relationship. So He took on hu-

manity in the person of Jesus.

On that first Christmas day in

a manger, the desire of Job was

finally realized. Jesus, who

could represent humans (be-

cause He was fully human) and

God (because He was fully

God), was born to become the

perfect mediator. He lived the

perfect life that we cannot live

and He took on the punish-

ment that we deserved (we cel-

ebrate that on Good Friday). It

is through Jesus that we can re-

ceive righteousness (or a right

standing) before God.

How does that happen?

The same way that Abraham

received righteousness. Genesis

15:6 says that “Abraham be-

lieved and it was credited to

him as righteousness.” There is

nothing we can do that causes

God to owe us the righteous-

ness from Jesus. Instead, we

have to trust in Jesus - believe

He is who He said He is and

that what He did is sufficient to

cover our imperfections. We

are then able to be in relation-

ship with God - and not just for

today but for eternity.

That’s good news!! That’s

worth celebrating!! That’s what

Christmas is really all about!!

Our focus at Kids Ther-

apy Center is to identify the

strengths and abilities of each

child related to the specific

functional goal or skill that

has been identified. The im-

pairments a child may have in

relation to that goal are as-

sessed using task analysis to

identify the system impair-

ments impeding the child

from achieving the goal.

Treatment strategies are em-

ployed each session that work

toward achievement of that

specific goal. Our goals can

range from independence in

rolling over to retrieve a toy

to independence in bike rid-

ing. We consider each of our

children to be unique and our

treatment sessions are tai-

lored to the individual needs

of the child using the NDT

framework. Family members

at Kids Therapy Center re-

ceive education in NDT prin-

ciples to maximize their

child’s quality of movement

and carry over functional

skills in a range of environ-

ments including home, pre-

school, school and the

community.

Motor control processes

are complex and depend on

integrating the sensory, per-

ceptual, cognitive and motor

systems. A skilled NDT

trained therapist can work on

integrating all of these sys-

tems to assist the child in

working toward functional

goals. By breaking down

components of a task, practic-

ing each component repeti-

tively and translating the new

skill into the child’s natural

environment, motor skills can

be greatly improved, confi-

dence and self assuredness en-

hanced and enthusiasm and

participation in activities of

daily living greatly increased.

In addition to making resolu-

tions and plans, the New

Year ushers in chilly temper-

atures in much of the country.

A heating system that is work-

ing well is essential to the com-

fort and health of homeowners.

If you haven’t done so, it’s

a good idea to have the heating

system inspected to ensure

everything is working smoothly.

While this is best handled prior

to winter’s arrival, in the midst

of the holiday hustle, it can be

easy to forget about home main-

tenance.

The National Fire Protec-

tion Association says that half

of all home-heating fires in the

U.S. occur in December, Janu-

ary and February. Failure to

clean equipment, primarily cre-

osote from solid-fueled heating

equipment and chimneys, is a

leading cause of home-heating

fires.

While the majority of

homeowners are safe, it cannot

hurt to inspect and clean the el-

ements involved in most home

furnaces and other equipment.

Not only will this help prevent

possible fires or help pinpoint

possible problem areas that

could lead to carbon monoxide

poisoning, this maintenance

can help produce cleaner indoor

air.

In addition to routinely re-

placing the air filter on the fur-

nace, it is commonly

recommended to have the air

ducts and venting throughout

the home cleaned. Although

there is no proven evidence

that trapped dust and other de-

bris in air ducts can pose a risk

to personal health, many people

The EPA does recommend

duct cleaning if any of these fac-

tors are present:

• There is substantial visible

mold growth present.

•Ducts are infested with ver-

min.

•Dust or debris is literally clog-

ging the ducts.

• You can see dust or debrisblowing into the home through

supply registers (vents) in thehome.

There are many companies

today that will service furnaces

and heating systems and provide

duct cleaning. As with any busi-

ness, their reliability and hon-

esty will have to be checked by

the homeowner. When seeking

a company to clean the ducts in

your home, first ask friends and

The thick, spiced drink

we know as eggnog has

become synonymous

with the holidays. It is so

linked with the Christmas sea-

son that a person may be hard-

pressed to find it sold in the

supermarket any other time of

the year. But eggnog wasn’t al-

ways the holiday beverage it

has become.Eggnog is believed to have

originated in 17th century Eu-

rope, primarily as a drink for

the elite, since the ingredients

in the beverage were hard to

come by and thusly relegated

to the very rich.

There are different theo-

ries on the origins of the word

eggnog itself. Some believe it

has gotten its name from the

Old English word “nog,” whichmeant “strong beer.” The “egg”

refers to one of the ingredients

in the beverage, fresh eggs.

Others surmise that it comes

from the word “noggin,” which

was a vessel for serving drinks

in taverns. The drink was

called “egg in a noggin,” which

was shortened to “eggnog.”

Still, there are others who say

its name is derived from the

term “grog,” which was an-

other term for booze. “Egg n’

grog” was eventually abbrevi-

ated to “eggnog.”Although there is little

certainty to the origins of the

name, the recipe for eggnog

has essentially remained un-

changed throughout the cen-

turies. It consists of beaten

eggs, cream or milk and sugar

mixed with some sort of alco-

holic spirit. The Old English

were believed to mix it with

wine, though once the drink

was brought to the NewWorld; colonist’s substituted

rum for the wine. Rum was

readily available through

tradesman running between

the Americas and

the Caribbean and

therefore less ex-

pensive than an-

other spirit. As

America grew and

eggnog was enjoyed

in different parts of

the country, the rum

was replaced with

regional spirits, in-cluding bourbon or

grain alcohol. Other

ingredients were

also added to give it

a customized flavor.

However, the use of

nutmeg, cinnamon and cloves

has become traditional flavors

for the holiday brew.

Although eggnog is

widely enjoyed throughout the

holiday season, in the past itwas served at special events

and social occasions. As a

warmed beverage it can easily

chase away winter’s chill. This

is how it may have come to be

enjoyed primarily during the

holidays.

Love it or hate it, eggnog

is a drink that can evoke

strong feelings of the holidayswithin minutes. There are

variations of eggnog sold com-

mercially, but many people

swear by homemade versions

for their taste and authenticity.

Try your own homemade

eggnog with this recipe, cour-

tesy of Cooks.com.

family members for referrals.

Also, utilize customer review

Web sites such as Yelp.com or

simply conduct a Web search

for the company to learn of its

reputation. You can also con-

tact the Better Business Bu-

reau or see if the business is

registered with the National

Air Duct Cleaners Associa-

tion (NAD CA).Research has not demon-

strated the effectiveness of any

chemical additives or sealants

placed in or on ducts for the

prevention of bacteria growth

or inhibition of dust formation.

It is advisable to steer clear of

companies that try to push ad-

ditional services or chemical ap-

plications that actually may

hinder health more than dust.An untrained person can

actually damage the ducts or

heating and cooling system.

That is why it is important to do

your research. A properly done

job should include cleaning all

of the components of the sys-

tem, including coils and con-

denser parts of the HVAC

system itself. The job should

take between 3 and 8 hours andwill range in cost from $450 to

$1,000, according to EPA esti-

mates. The “blow and go” spe-

cials advertised for $100 are

likely a waste of money and may

inadvertently cause damage or

dislodge dust inappropriately.

The NADCA says the

most effective way to clean air

ducts and ventilation systems is

to employ “source removal”methods of cleaning. This re-

quires a contractor to place the

system under negative pressure

through the use of a specialized,

powerful vacuum. While the

vacuum draws air through the

system, devices are inserted

into the ducts to dislodge any

debris that might be stuck to

interior surfaces. The debris

can then travel down the ductsto the vacuum, which removes

it from the system and the

home.

Although there are no

proven health benefits, air duct

cleaning can help improve in-

door air quality and may help

an HVAC system operate more

efficiently.

Every year, right before the

clock strikes 12 on De-

cember 31, people far and

wide make resolutions for the

New Year. There are some com-

mon themes from year to year,

these top the list.

•Lose weight: Whether they’re

inspired by goals of healthy liv-

ing, the reality of stepping on a

scale after holiday dining or sim-

ply because clothes have been alittle snug, people often resolve

to lose weight in the year ahead.

•Quit smoking: Individuals are

feeling increased pressure to give

up the habit due to smoking bans

in many buildings and public

spaces. Plus, it’s one of the worst

things a person can do for his or

her health.

•Get fit: In conjunction with

losing weight, the overall quest

for physical fitness drives up gym

membership numbers every Jan-

uary.

•Tame finances: The first credit

card bill after the holiday season

may be a wakeup call for those

who have had difficulty balanc-

ing a budget. This is often a time

when people make plans to get

finances under control at the

start of the New Year.

•Enjoy life more: Many people

are taking personal happinessinto their own hands. Perhaps

thanks to a troublesome econ-

omy and other sources of sour

news, it has become common in

recent years for resolutions to be

made concerning reducing stress

and having more fun. This may

involve everything from spend-

ing more time with family to tak-

ing time for leisure activities to

simply enjoying more fun.

ica are spinal stenosis (nar-

rowing of the spinal canal),

bone spurs caused by arthritis,

and piriformis syndrome

(spasms of the piriformis mus-

cle). In all these conditions,

when a nerve is being com-

pressed or “pinched” the

nerve becomes very irritated

and the process of inflamma-

tion begins.

Inflammation will createthe swelling and soreness

around the nerve and may ul-

timately create painful sec-

ondary muscle spasms and

tightness in the lower back.

For the most part, sciat-

ica is treated effectively with

conservative care which now

includes lumbar decompres-

sion therapy (an innovative

device designed specifically to

reduce nerve irritation in thelumbar spine). Now with the

introduction of these innova-

tive rehabilitative devices,

surgical interventions for con-

ditions that lead to sciatica

are significantly less. Also,

advanced diagnostic imaging

such as MRI is often used to

help identify the cause of

symptoms of sciatica. Once

the cause is identified, an ap-

propriate treatment plan canbe recommended by a health

care provider.

It is important for a per-

son to seek the appropriate

professional advice regarding

lower back pain and associ-

ated pain, numbness, and tin-

gling into the lower

extremity. A chiropractor is a

professional that is specifi-

cally trained to identify con-

ditions that may cause backpain and sciatica. Once the

cause of pain is identified, an

individualized treatment pro-

gram is utilized, to reducenerve pressure, restore proper

spinal mechanics, and en-

hance the function of the

nervous system.

Drs. Glenn and Christine Foss

are the owners of Advance

Sports Medicine and Physical

Therapy Center in Riverdale.

Both doctors have been practic-

ing chiropractic for over thir-

teen years and have beenamongst the communities lead-

ing health care providers. As

innovators in health care, they

have merged chiropractic and

 physical therapy services to-

gether to enhance the quality of

 patient care and overall treat-

ment outcome. If you have

any questions for either of the

doctors or would like to sched-

ule a consultation please call

let him or her make the sale.

Long-term gains could qual-

ify for a zero-percent tax rate

if your parent is in the lower

tax brackets.

•Assess equipment needs foryour business

For business owners,

this year offers what may be

a last-chance opportunity for

an enhanced deduction:

100% bonus depreciation is

scheduled to expire Decem-

ber 31. The increased Sec-

tion 179 expensing of up to

$500,000 is also slated to

shrink after the end of the

year.Synchronize these two

tax benefits with your asset

purchase plan before year-

end to make the most of

2011 deductions. For in-

stance, you can apply the

Section 179 deduction to

used property, while bonus

depreciation is available only

for new assets you buy and

place in service in 2011. One

caution: Some states like New Jersey do not follow fed-

eral bonus depreciation rules.

•Choose strategies that fit

your situation

Other strategies for re-

ducing your 2011 federal in-

come tax bill include maxi-

mizing losses by increasing

your participation in passive

activities, taking steps to

write off worthless securities

and bad debts, and harvest-ing capital losses.

More tax-savers to consider

as year-end approaches

•Estimate your tax liability

for 2011. Adjust your final

quarterly voucher or your

withholding to avoid under-

payment penalties. Check

estimated payments for your

C corporation for the same

reason.•Consider prepaying college

tuition you’ll owe for the first

semester of 2012. Expenses

paid for you, your spouse, or

your dependents will count

on your 2011 return if you

qualify for education tax

credits. Breaks include

the American Opportunity

Credit, which can reduce

your tax bill by up to $2,500

and is partially refundable.• Gather tax identification

numbers your business will

need to issue year-end report-

ing statements. Though two

reporting requirements were

repealed (the one for rental

property owners and the one

for payments to corpora-

tions), the old rules live on.

In addition, penalties for fail-

ure to file have increased.

•Consider setting up a newlyavailable SIMPLE cafeteria

plan for your business. The

plus: pre-tax employee bene-

fits without the need for dis-

crimination testing.

•Hire your child under the

age of 18 to do legitimate

work in your business. You

get a business tax deduction,

and your child can earn up to

$5,800 without paying in-

come tax. Bonus: When yourbusiness is a sole proprietor-

ship, you don’t have to pay

FICA taxes. Double bonus:

The kiddie tax does not

apply to wages.

•Start a retirement account

for your working child. Boost

the tax savings you get from

paying your child to work in

your business by gifting the

child money for a deductible,

traditional IRA contribu-tion. The maximum basic

contribution for 2011 is

$5,000.

•Claim the last of the resi-

dential energy credit. Install

certain energy efficient prop-

erty in your home, such as in-

sulation, doors, and windows,

and get a federal tax credit of

up to $500. That’s the aggre-

gate total credit, including

amounts you claimed in prioryears. The credit is scheduled

to expire after December

2011.

Be aware that Congress

might pass legislation before

year-end that would require

adjustments to your tax plan.

identifying the tax strategies

that best fit your situation.
