    y JRD Tata was one of the most enterprising Indianentrepreneurs. He was a pioneer aviator and builtone of the largest industrial houses of India.

    y JRD Tata was born on July 29, 1904 in Paris. Hismother was a French, while his father was Parsi.

    y JRD's full name was Jehangir Ratanji Dadabhoy

    Tata and he was popularly known as Jeh to hisfriends.y JRD's father Ratanji Dadabhoy Tata and Sri

    Jamsetji Tata shared their greatness from thesame great-great-grandfather, Ervad Jamsheed

    Tata, a priest of Navsari.

    y JRD Tata was the second of four children. He waseducated in France, Japan and England beforebeing drafted into the French army for amandatory one-year period.

    y JRD wanted to extend his service in the forces

    but destiny had something else in store for him.

    y By leaving the French army JRD's life was savedbecause shortly thereafter, the regiment in whichhe served was totally wiped out during anexpedition in Morocco.

    y JRD Tata joined Tata & Sons as an unpaidapprentice in 1925.

    y He has great interest in flying. On February 10,1929, JRD became the first Indian to pass thepilot's examination.

    y With this distinctive honor of being India's firstpilot, he was instrumental in giving wings to Indiaby building Tata Airlines, which ultimately became Air India.

    y His passion for flying was fulfilled with theformation of the Tata Aviation Service in 1932.

    In 1938, at the age of 34, JRD was electedChairman of Tata & Sons making him the head of the largest industrial group in India.

    y He started with 14 enterprises under hisleadership and half a century later on July 26,1988, when he left , Tata & Sons was aconglomerate of 95 enterprises which they eitherstarted or in which they had controlling interest

    y JRD was the trustee of Sir Dorabji Tata Trustfrom its inception in 1932, which remained underhis wings for over half a century.

    y Under his guidance, this Trust established Asia'sfirst cancer hospital, the Tata Memorial Center for

    Cancer, Research and Treatment, Bombay, 1941.

    y It also founded the Tata Institute of SocialSciences, 1936 (TISS), the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, 1945 (TIFR), and theNational Center for Performing Arts.

    y In 1948, JRD Tata launched Air IndiaInternational as India's first international airline.In 1953, the Indian Government appointed JRDas Chairman of Air-India and a director on theBoard of Indian Airlines-a position JRD retainedfor 25-years.

    y For his crowning achievements in Aviation, JRDwas bestowed with the title of Honorary AirCommodore of India.

    y In 1956, JRD Tata initiated a program of closer"employee association with management" to giveworkers a stronger voice in the affairs of the

    company.

    y He firmly believed in employee welfare andespoused the principles of an eight-hour workingday, free medical aid, workers' provident scheme,and workmen's accident compensation schemes,which were later, adopted as statutory requirements in India.

    y The picture has been taken from the TataMuseum in Jamshedpur, India. It is a painting

    that was gifted to the steel tycoon JRD Tata onhis birthday by a street artist. For quite sometimeno one could figure out what the painting wasabout.

    Some said it was abstract art. Others claimed itwas a bad effort by an equally bad artist. Nobody was able to understand this particular work, Thepainting was given to JRD personally and theartist had promised to reveal the secret shortly.However, JRD passed away before the secret was

    revealed. And what was the secret?

    y JRD Tata cared greatly for his workers. In 1979, Tata Steel instituted a new practice; a worker isdeemed to be "at work" from the moment heleaves home for work till he returns home fromwork.

    y The company is financially liable to the worker if any mishap takes place on the way to and fromwork. Tata Steel Township was also selected as aUN Global Compact City because of the quality of life, conditions of sanitation, roads and welfarethat were offered by Tata Steel.

    y JRD Tata received a number of awards. Hereceived the Padma Vibhushan in 1957 on the eveof silver jubilee of Air India. He also received the

    Guggenheim Medal for aviation in 1988.

    y In 1992, because of his selfless humanitarianendeavors, JRD Tata was awarded India's highestcivilian honor, the Bharat Ratna-one of the rarest

    instances in which this award was granted duringa person's lifetime.

    y In the same year, JRD Tata was also bestowedwith the United Nations Population Award for hiscrusading endeavors towards initiating andsuccessfully implementing the family planningmovement in India, much before it became anofficial government policy

    y JRD Tata died in Geneva, Switzerland onNovember 29, 1993 at the age of 89. On hisdeath, the Indian Parliament was adjourned inhis memory-an honor not usually given topersons who are not Members of Parliament .
