Hello Everyone,

Congratulations to Bruce Murphy and Buck, his GSPM who is now the 2019 UKC National Champion! Normally it is Bruce’s setter male “Ryder” in the winner’s circle, but this time

it is Buck. Someone said Bruce is so good he could take a tom cat and win with it! That is a pretty high compliment Mr. Bruce.

Iowa Gun Dog Club, located in Osceola, Iowa, was the host to this years United Kennel Club Performance Trial. What great hosts they were! If anyone would want to host a National Trial, contact Mr. Terry Ward and his crew. They have the blueprints of what it takes to put on a 1st class trial, full of wonderful people and just plain perfect mid-west hospitality. Thank you ALL!

I’d like to take a little time to inform each member about things you normally don’t get to see. Since Nov. 1, 2018 your National Officer’s have worked tirelessly for you, the member, in order to make our organization better.

Nance Ceccarelli and Julia in the office are in the process of going over the 2014 Rule Book and editing each and every line page by page. They have promised to produce a NEW 2019 Rule Book before September. Folks this is a very large undertaking and I want to commend both of them for it.

Mikael Mulberry has worked on numerous projects thus far: a new judging test to be able to take on-line; he was the National Officer in charge of the brand new Amateur Program that was unveiled at the BOD meeting in April; and, was the lead contact in the transfer of owner-ship contract with Kodello for ownership of source codes with our information system.

Marilyn Cunningham was charged with the magazine which we now have on time. We have added new authors such as Doc Ramsey’s View from a Vet; Todd Kellum, UKC Representa-tive with articles about hunting dogs and registrations; and Nick Hackman, our IT man from MoKan Region with articles about our computer system. This magazine is a huge workload!

Cheryl Higham is our financial wizard, she’s not only excellent with our money, saving here and saving there, but she has been the driving force behind our new corporate sponsors, Quail Forever, Trophy Time Gun Dog Supply, and two more that are in the works to be completed before the Dog of the Year Trial.

I want you to know you have elected some very hard-working people and the long hours that they work for the betterment of your organization should be noted by all! Julia and Mary, in our corporate office, have had to deal with all these changes in the last 8 months. They have been very open-minded and cooperative as well as helpful along the way.

So, if you see any of these people, tell them; email; call; text them a huge THANK YOU for all of their hard work and dedication towards making NSTRA better for all of us. I am looking forward to the trip to Montana for the Purina Endurance Trial. It is a full trial again and Cheryl has promised a new surprise when we get there. We are anxious to see what she has up her sleeve.

UKC PERFORMANCE CLASSIC:The qualification for this trial is points earned from April 1 to March 31. Weekend trials only. No points from qualification or final rounds of national championship or regional championship trials will be counted.

DOG OF THE YEAR:This trial will begin on Wednesday of the last full week of October. This trial is based on region elimination placement and/or high point status. All entries must be postmarked 45 days prior to the first day of the Dog of the Year trial. (NO INVITATIONS WILL BE SENT.)

HOME REGION:Members requesting a change of Home Region must do so, in writing, through the National Office between the dates of October 1 and January 1. *Exception: A member who permanently relocates to within the boundaries of a Region, other than their Home Region, may make written application to the NSTRA office at anytime to request a change in their Home Region.

ASSOCIATE MEMBERSHIPS:Associate memberships are available to members’ spouses and children 18 years and under, still living at home. There must be at least one regular paid membership in the household to qualify. Associate members have the same rights as regular members EXCEPT they are unable to vote in any regional or national elections including rule or by-law changes, they cannot hold an office, and they do not receive a magazine.

RULE CHANGES:Proposed new rule changes or additions shall be submitted sixty (60) days prior to the first day of the Trial of Champions and/or the Dog of the Year trial.

CONSTITUTION/BY-LAW CHANGES:All proposed amendments to the Constitution and By-laws shall be submitted to the National Officers at least ninety (90) days prior to the first day of the Trial of Champions or the Dog of the Year trial.

Plainly stated, a dog that does not get elected to the Hall of Fame in the year nominated must be re-submitted each year in order to be considered for election.

TRIAL SCHEDULES:Fall trial schedules are due in the officeby May 1. Spring trial schedules are duein the office by Nov. 1. All trials must bepublished on the website 4 weeks prior to their running.

SCHEDULING FEES:Trial scheduling fees are requested in the NSTRA office at least 4 weeks prior to your trial date in order to mail the packets on a timely basis.

TRIAL REPORTS:Trial reports are due in the NSTRA office 10 days after the trial date.

QUAIL INVITATIONAL:This trial is always held the last week in February that includes a Saturday. The qualification period for this trial is Nov. 1 through Oct. 31. This includes all points earned during the time frame, except points earned from placements in the final “Top 4” of a National Championship trial or Regional Championship trial (qualifying rounds do count). Entry into the trial is based on points (dog with most points first to get in and on down the list, etc.). NO INVITATIONS WILL BE SENT. Any dog with a placement during the specified time frame will be eligible to enter. Amateur points do not qualify entry into Championship trials.

TRIAL OF CHAMPIONS:The criteria for entry into this trial is that the dog has earned an open championship and is at least a 1X open champion by February 1 of the current year OR the dog can be a paid standby for this trial by achieving their open championship between February 2 and March 31 of the current year.

Purina Endurance Classic: Entry into this trial will be based on all open points earned from June 1 through May 31. Points earned from placements in the final “Top 4” of a National Championship trial or Regional Championship trial do not count; however, points from qualifying rounds do count.

TOP PERFORMANCE:Dogs must have at least 20 open points from June 1 through May 31 of the applicable year to be eligible. Points will be from weekend trials only. From there, the award will be based on national trials and regional eliminations. The Performance Trial will be the beginning national trial each year, even if it ends prior to June 1 in order to keep the number of nationals the same each year. The Regional Elimination trial will be based on regularly scheduled regionals for each year and only one regional can count per year. Regionals scheduled or rescheduled to be held after June 1 will apply to the previous year. For national trials, a dog must make the Saturday cut to receive a qualifying score. Each national trial will have a point value of 800 points. The value will drop 25 points per placement throughout the Saturday cut (1 – 800, 2 - 775, 3 – 750, etc.). In addition, 100 bonus points will be awarded to the Champion, 75 for second place, 50 for third and 25 for fourth. Each regional elimination will have a point value of 600 points. The value will drop 25 points per placement until the last dog or points run out (1 – 600, 2 – 575, 3 – 550, etc.). In addition, 100 points will be awarded to the Champion, 75 for the second place dog, 50 for the third and 25 for fourth. The placement for the regional eliminations and national trials is determined by the score of the last round in which the dog ran.

HALL OF FAME NOMINATIONS:Hall of Fame nominations will be accepted November 1 through March 31 of each year. Send these to the office. Nominations of dogs to the NSTRA Hall of Fame are NOT “carried over” to following years should the dog not be elected in the year nominated.


REGION HIGH POINT:Points earned in the qualifying rounds of a Regional Elimination or a Championship trial DO count towards the region’s high point competition. Points earned in the finals of above trials DO NOT count towards the region’s high point.

OWNERSHIP CHANGE:Once a dog takes a NSTRA placement, any subsequent ownership changes must be sent to the NSTRA office. Please send a copy of the papers with the new owners’ names to the office. Transfer copies will not be accepted. The date of transfer will be the date shown on the papers.

FIRST TIME PLACEMENTS:The National Office now requires a copy of the dog’s registration certificate for first time placements. This can either be submitted by the owner or the trial chairman. We will accept copies by fax (317-839-4197), e-mail ([email protected]) or a photocopy by regular mail.

NSTRA Distinguished Members:The NSTRA Distinguished Members award honors those extraordinary men and women whose contributions and achievements significantly helped develop, or continued to improve, the National Shoot to Retrieve Field Trial Association, Inc. This award will be presented annually at the Dog of the Year banquet. Nominations are to be submitted by August 31. A short description of the individual and their contributions to NSTRA should be sent to the national office. A picture of the individual should be included if available. Contact the NSTRA office for a list of criteria.

The committee will review all nominations and verify contributions. Decisions will be made not only by the information submitted but by any other information collected.

The committee will make their decision by September 30. A permanent plaque will be located at the NSTRA office with a smaller plaque awarded to the individual or their family if deceased.

The National Shoot To Retrieve Association (NSTRA) was founded by a group of dedicated bird hunters looking for a way to extend

the fun they enjoyed with their bird dogs after their season ended. Field Trials, under hunting conditions, were the answer. Field Trials

provide an extended the season, a sportsmanlike environment and competition with others who enjoy bird dogs.

SoCal NSTRA pulled off a three-day/double field trial over the Memorial Day weekend, May 25-27th, 2019. We had to contend with wind, rain, and some good weather. We would like to say thank you to all of the folks that came from Arizona, and Northern California to ensure that we had birds, judges and enough entries for all three days to be a three-point trial. We also would like to thank our bird planter, Eric Faris. I marshaled all three days, both fields, with help and thoroughly enjoyed it. Thank you to all of our judges: Saturday A field, Maurice Davis and Jennifer Beach; Saturday B field, Lanny Darr and Ron Horn; Sunday A field, Debbie Carnahan and Mitch Prowse; Sunday B field, Ron Horn and Bill James; Monday A field, Jennifer Beach and Tanya Wall-Perez; and Monday B field, Ron Knesal and Ty Mitchel.

HIGHPOINT Southern California NSTRA would like to recognize a very special accom-

plishment by one of our young members. Jagermeister’s Pepper Dem Birds ended the 2019 season as the high point dog of the SoCal region. Pepper was handled by a first year handler, twelve year old Jordan Prowse, son of Mitch Prowse. Jordan handled Pepper half of the time and placed in three different regions with her. While Jordan was handling Pepper, Pepper obtained her first NSTRA championship, and almost her second within the 2019 season.

Statiscally speaking, Jordan will remind his father that had he handled Pep-per full time, Pepper would have had her second championship as well. Hats off to Jordan for a job well done!!!! Keep up the trialing with your awesome partner, Pepper!

2019 UKC PerformanceThe UKC Performance was held in Osceola, Iowa, May 29th through June 1st. All participants were given a warm welcome by the Iowa Gun Dog Association. The fields were ready, the meals were planned & a little rain could not stop the trial. Fortunately, the majority of the rain occurred on Tuesday & at night. This year the trial was full with 128 dogs & several dogs on the bye list. We started on Wednesday morning honoring our NSTRA veterans in front of the flag with a prayer & the singing of the National Anthem by Ron Huels, the trial chairman & NSTRA president. In round 1 on Wednesday & Thursday, the format was beat your bracemate. In round 2 on Friday, the top 8 dogs from each field advanced to Saturday where the format changed back to beat your bracemate. The IGDA members Terry Ward, Bill Sumpter, and Frank Downs provided a cook to order breakfast each day. Lunches and dinners were prepared and served by Marlys Wells, Ruthie Brown, Bev Phipps, Jackie Schlarbaum and Peggy Card. This the 4th National (2 UKC Performance & 2 Purina Endurance) hosted by the Iowa Gun Dog Association & they have it down to a science. They also give back to NSTRA by donating 4-wheelers (Ron Huels, Frank Downs & Terry Ward) and comping camping spots for the trial coordinator and field marshals. NSTRA provided goodie bags for the participants with a collapsible water bowl, pheasant holders, water & snacks, NSTRA logo, and insulated lunch box, The field marshals were Paul Phipps (MW, first time national field marshal) and Lori Sprick (IL region). The judges were Ron Becker (IL region), Rick Meyer (MK region, first national judging). Donny Parker (AR-LA region) and Brent Wheeler (MK region). Bo Marcum was the bird planter.Wednesday morning started cloudy & cool – perfect conditions for dogs – maybe not so much for handlers and judges.

Field A started the trial with Paul Phipps, Rick Meyer and Brent Wheeler as the officials.

Friday night, there was another great dinner & a Calcutta by brace. It raised a total of $5,380 with $1,076 going to the NSTRA scholarship fund. The payout was $1,076 for first, $807 for second, $538 for third and $269 for forth. The IGDA got $1,614.

It was a very exciting final hour. Bruce Murphy’s Buck ended up

with 4 finds (84, 87,88, & 86), 3 retrieves (I/85.5, 85,86,/) and a back (66). Tim Rhoades Bailey had 3 finds (84, 84, 68), 3 retrieves (92, 80, 83) and a 0 back.

The 3th runner-up was Risley’s Carlink (Carly) owned by Mark Risley of the Midwest region and handled by Bill Sumpter also of the Midwest region. Carly is a 5 years old English Setter female out of sire Phipp’s Linking the Past and Phipps’ Bird Desire. She has earned 17 total NSTRA points. Carly was untested in a national trial, but rose to the challenge. Bill Sumpter was awarded UKC Performance finalist chair, the Purina runner-up’s jacket and Purina ProPlan, a Garmin gift certificate, a Montana Silversmith belt buckle, a NSTRA trophy, a knife set, a gift certificate from Dogs Unlimited, and a Gun Dog Supply gift certificate. In addition, a new sponsor Trophy Time Gundogs awarded the 3rd runner-up $100 gift certificate. Congratula-tions to Carly, Bill Sumpter and Mark Risley for a great week.

The 2nd runner-up was Blu’s Pepperwill Chloe (Chloe) owned and handled by Nathan Tekell from the West Texas region. Chloe is almost 4 years old and is a one-time champion with 24 points of which 18 were 1st place points. Chloe is an English setter female out of sire Tomoka’s Smokin Blu and dam Sage’s Majic Mark. Chloe was given to Nathan as a one year old by Penny Montgomery who joined NSTRA in October, 1992. Penny was the owner of Tomoka’s Smokin Blu who won the Dog of the Year trial twice & is in the NSTRA Hall of Fame. Chloe also placed 3rd on Wednesday in an elimination round. Nathan was awarded a UKC Performance finalist chair, the Purina runner-up’s jacket and Purina ProPlan, a Garmin gift certificate, Montana Silversmith belt buckle, a NSTRA trophy a knife set, a gift certificate from Dogs Unlimited, and a Gun Dog Supply gift certificate. They were also awarded a 2nd runner-up $150 gift certificate from Trophy Time Gundogs. Congratulations to Nathan and Chloe.

The 1st runner-up was Rhoades Woods Bailey (Bailey), owned and handle by Tim Rhoades from the Michigan region. Bailey is a Brittany female who is 4 years old and her sire is Roades Woods Loki and her dam is Donna’s Lil Duracell. She is an amateur champion & has 9 open points with 5 first place points. Bailey had several zero backs during the trial & Tim said if he had known she would to so well, he would have worked on backing a little more. Tim was awarded a UKC Performance finalist chair, the Purina runner-up’s jacket and Purina ProPlan, a Garmin gift certificate , Montana Silversmith belt buckle, a NSTRA trophy a knife set, a gift certificate from Dogs Unlim-ited, and a Gun Dog Supply gift certificate. They were also awarded a 1st runner-up $200 gift certificate from Trophy Time Gundogs. Congratulations to Bailey and Tim for a job well done.

The 2019 UKC Performance Champion was Rising Sun Buck Naked owned and handled by Bruce Murphy from the Midwest region. Bruce is not new to the winner’s circle having won this trial in 2018 with Ryder. Buck is a German shorthair male out of Vinn’s Sofa King and Shadowrock’s Mighty Mouse. He is a 3-time champion with 65 total points and 46 1st place points. Buck is not new to the national

stage. His best showing in a national was 9th at the 2019 Trial of Champions. Bruce was presented with a UKC Performance Cham-pion chair by Todd Kellam. In addition to the trophy a knife set, and a winner’s Montana Silversmith’s belt buckle, Mike Botts (Garmin and Nestle Purina Pet Care representative) presented Bruce with a Garmin Pro 550 collar, the Purina Winner’s Jacket and 450 pounds of Purina ProPlan. He also received gift certificates from Dogs Unlimited and Gun Dog Supply and a $250 gift certificate from Trophy Time Gundogs.

I have been asked to write an article on how to keep our canine partners healthy, able to hunt and compete in trials at their full potential. Since tick season is upon us and I have already had one friend with Lyme’s Disease and another last year with Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, I have decided to mention their prevalence in the canine world.

Lyme Disease is spread by deer ticks that at one time were most commonly found in the northeastern United States. The range of this tick is increasing each

year making Lyme Disease a more wide spread problem. The symptoms range from lameness, joint pain, fever and decreased appetite. Early diagnosis is helpful for a fast recovery and the disease responds well to antibiotics, if treated early. Unfortunately, symptoms may not occur until weeks after the bite from an infected tick. The dog also does not have the target rash that humans display and as with a lot of tick-borne diseases symptoms can be confusing and mimic signs of many other illnesses.

Ehrlichiosis is probably the most common of all tick-borne diseases and is spread by the brown dog tick. Symptoms can be delayed weeks post infected

tick bite and can be vague making it very hard to diagnose. Symptoms are runny nose, watery eyes, difficulty breathing, anemia and enlarged lymph nodes. Early diagnosis and prompt treatment greatly enhance this disease’s response to antibiotics.

Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever is also spread by tick bites. Symptoms show up quickly, appearing within a few days of exposure. Symptoms include fever, muscle

aches and joint pain, anemia and depression. Antibiotic treatment usually works very well and improvement can be rapid if diagnosed early.

I should also mention a few other tick related diseases which occur in the US that may not be as commonly known, these are canine Anaplasmosis, canine Babesiosis, canine Bartonellosis, and canine Hepatozoonosis. These particular diseases may or may not respond well to antibiotics and can lead to very serious illnesses and possible death.

The drug of choice in most tick-borne diseases is

doxycycline, which can be very effective in most cases. After a confirmed diagnosis, diligent home care is essential for improvement of symptoms and recovery. Dogs with more complex cases will need supportive care such as IV fluids and even blood transfusions. Early diagnosis is the key to positive treatment response.

The most important tool we have for any tick-borne disease is tick control. If you are trialing or hunting in areas with heavy tick populations you should be using one of the several tick control agents available. Fortunately, there are many effective control medications available today ranging from oral to topical applications. Ask your veterinarian about his or her external parasite control recommendations. I would recommend you consider adding a Lyme Disease vaccine, which is now available, along with a screening test for tick disease to your annual physical protocol. n
